The beautiful Malia Bree at Onomea
HI Tax ID # W83948495-01
Enjoy the beautiful ocean view and the tropical landscaping in this private home with gated entry. Spend hours on the wrap-around deck enjoying the tropical breezes and Hawaiian ambiance. Sit back and watch for the humpback whales from the patio, or see the cruise ships make their way toward Hilo. Be dazzled by our incredible stargazing, as the island has been outfitted with special lighting for the observatories up on Mauna Kea.
Centrally located in East Hawaii on the Onomea Scenic Route, often called the most beautiful place on the Big Island, you'll find yourself in old Hawaii. The whole house is yours to relax in, with the town of Hilo just 10 - 12 minutes away, serene Akaka Falls and Honomu Town five minutes away, and the 'must see' Volcano National Park 45 minutes away.
The Hamakua coastline's best kept secret is our unique tradewind weather that encourages most of the rainfall to occur in the early mornings and evenings, leaving the day fresh and clean with sunshine and breezes. You will not be disappointed by the colors, plants, museums, gardens and tours. Many of our attractions comes with no cost other than your camera to help you savor your memories.
Honeymoon, enjoy your keiki (children), or write a book. The ocean views, tropical landscaping, and peace of old Hawaii at the Malia Bree will surely inspire you to not only 'be on vacation,' but 'feel on vacation.'
Lyndy, My son said it all when he walked up the stairs and looked into the window. "Mom, this place is awesome!" We just came from Oahu, and are on to Kona but there is no question in my mind that Malia Bree will be our favorite home away from home. Our time here is definitely too short.
What makes this place so special? The fact that it feels so native Hawaiian, the wonderful fresh fruit smoothies across the street, the beautiful road through unbelievably lush jungle, the quaint feel of Hilo town with the diverse farmer's market--but mostly the spirit of "Aloha" that your showed us from the first e-mail . You treated us like family visiting. We cannot thank you enough for teaching us the spirit of Hawaii Mahalo
The home was easy to locate with the directions lyndy provided before our arrival. The flowers on arrival was a nice homely touch. The home is very well maintained and had excellent standards in regards to cleanliness. The layout of the house was fantastic as my parents were on one side of the house and my aunt and I were on the other. The front door steps are very easy to climb (lower then even normal steps!!). We survived the first big storm of the season without loss of power but the rain came down very heavy. We loved the view and woke to a number of animals (chickens, turkeys, cows etc) in the paddock in the mornings. The drive into Hilo itself is not that far (10mins) and we did a day trip up to the Volcano national park. Thanks Lyndy for going the extra mile you have fantastic customer service skills and I would recommed this property to family and friends.
The home was clean and well equipped. Our kids enjoyed the foosball table and all the board games they had in the house. Our only complain would be the tree frogs (we were made aware of them before hand) who get quite loud in the evenings and take some getting use to.
We really enjoyed our stay!
Thank You Lynda!
We had a short three day stay at this lovely home, and could not be happier with our choice.
The home is spacious, well furnished, surrounded by lush vegetation, with an ocean view, and only a short drive from Hilo.
Everything one could wish for was provided. I would highly recommend this vacation rental!
Our 3 week Hawaiian vacation was split between the Kona and Hilo sides of the island. While on the East side we stayed in this great home. The home itself was perfect for our family that includes 2 kids (7, 11) and three adults. The kids loved the games, fuse ball, darts, and the large areas to play both inside and out. I loved the great kitchen that was well stocked and a joy to use. The whole house was very clean and well stocked. The setting was beyond amazing with the view off of the huge lanai just breathtaking. You could see the sun rising over the fields, palm trees and ocean! Across the street was the top rated smoothie shop on the island that is surrounded by the farm that all the fruit for the delicious smoothies is grown...great perk! Just down the road is the Botanical gardens and trails to the ocean (make sure to try Donkey trail just before you reach the gardens, it is an awesome hike through the jungle to the ocean). The home if within 15 minutes of Hilo, an hour from the Volcano, and super convenient to the Hamakua coast. The owner was a joy to work with and gave us great recommendations of local things to see and do. The only thing small thing that was a negative for us (although not all from reading the guest book) was the very loud Coqui Frogs that sang every night. Closing the windows helped. Other than that minor thing I would say that this house was a perfect fit for us...would most certainly rent again!
We only stayed here for three days (all our time on the Big Island), but we really enjoyed it. The house is easy to find and is in a beautiful setting. Inside is also lovely and very clean. We've never been to Hawai'i before, but comparing it to other places we considered renting, the cost is also a big plus. We got great customer service both before and during our stay - Lyndy is very helpful and attentive.
There were only two drawbacks for us that I think it's fair to tell people about. We happened to be here during unseasonably hot weather with no breeze. The living room is still quite pleasant thanks to the ceiling fans. I can't speak to the master bedroom, because we let my in-laws have that. However, the second bedroom is very hot at night if no breeze is blowing because although there is a ceiling fan, it is not over the bed. They do provide other fans and that, combined with having the doors open (the porch around the bedroom is screened) helps, but it was still very warm. If there were any breeze at all, I imagine it would be fine.
The second thing is the neighbor is noisy and unpleasant. He appears to be doing major construction, and we heard this and other noises (lawn mower, truck, etc) from about 7:30 until we left a few hours later to sight-see. This actually wasn't a big problem because we were up already by the time the noise started. But what really irritated me was my son and his grandmother were playing with the foosball table, making as much noise as you'd expect from a nine-year-old and a 75-year-old, and the neighbor started honking his truck horn non-stop. Apparently he doesn't like his power tools drowned out by the sound of a child laughing. I could understand if we were a bunch of rowdy, drunk college kids at midnight, but this was about 10 am after he'd been making noise for about 3 hours. This upset my son, so he didn't feel like he could play foosball any more.
I'm undecided if I would stay here again. If the neighbor moves, I definitely would. Other than him, the house is pretty ideal and it was otherwise a pleasant experience overall.
We stayed at the Malia Bree for an extended family vacation and it was the perfect place for a quiet getaway. Great central location to explore Volcanoes, Kohala and Hilo. The house is well equipped and was always a great place to come back to in the evenings after a day spent exploring the island. Thank you, Lyndy for your hospitality and offering us this great escape!!
