Photos and Description of the Le Faou vacation house rental
See our website link just before the Reviews for more photos and info.

June Special Offer - see our website!. One week remaining in July! Throughout this luxurious accommodation you'll find wow factors galore!! The stunning 31ft living/dining room has 3 sets of French doors leading out onto a sun-drenched south-facing balcony with spectacular views over the water. The kitchen and 5 of the 6 bedrooms all have the same view looking over the 2 acres of orchard and gardens which continue right down to the estuary with direct access to the water. All 6 bedrooms are beautifully furnished and there are 2 bathrooms, 2 shower-rooms and 4 separate toilets. One of the bathrooms has a whirlpool bath installed and after a hard day holidaying there's nothing better than a mass of bubbles in the bath with a glass of bubbly in hand! For even more photos and details, please take a look at our website, there's a link to it lower down this page just before the Reviews. Our 28'x15' pool heated to 27ºC (depending on ambient temperature) has the latest automatic dosing equipment that continuously monitors water quality to give you a sparkling clean pool.

House Layout:: Ground floor - The Library is a delightful room with french doors opening out onto the garden. There are hundreds of books to choose from and we're happy for you to swap your holiday reading for any of them (a handful are marked not to be removed). There's also a TV in here with DVD and Video player with lots of children's videos plus a cupboard full of board games. Utility Room - Houses the central heating boiler, washing machine, tumble dryer, iron, ironing board and clothes airer. There's also a large sink and a toilet. Garage: Contains 2 bicycles and all the garden maintenance tools (chained up for safety). 1st floor - Open-plan sitting-room, dining-room and kitchen. Family bathroom and separate toilet. 2nd floor - 4 bedrooms, 3 doubles (2 with washbasins) and 1 small twin (one bed pulls out from under the other), family bathroom and separate toilet. 3rd floor (loft) - 2 very large bedrooms, double with child's bed and 2 cots, and 1 spacious twin, both with ensuite showers. Separate toilet on landing just for these two rooms.

The secure garden is accessed via either the driveway, the library or the 1st floor balcony. The huge deck is adjacent to the built in BBQ and is perfect for al-fresco dining. The pool is a uniform 1.4m in depth, great for teaching little ones to swim, and our aim is to keep it heated to 27ºC from Easter to October. However this is very dependent on ambient temperatures, so may well be more or less than this.

Bird-watching and Golf: The living area on the first floor affords the most superb view of the estuary; directly in front of the house is a bend in the river where flocks of sea birds congregate to feed at low tide. There are binoculars and a high powered telescope together with an in-depth guidebook to facilitate your (new) hobby. Birds we've seen to date include herons, spoonbills, egrets, shelducks, curlews and dozens of others we haven't identified yet!

Brittany is overloaded with golf courses, all beautifully maintained by the French but very much under-used. One of the closest courses is the Brest Iroise course at Landernau. It's 6296 yards and Par 71, set in the heart of wild moors offering unforgettable views of Brest Harbour. It's one of the most challenging in Brittany and ranked 13th in all of France. There's also a 9-hole course where beginners can warm up first...........!

Eating out in Le Faou: There are 6 restaurants in Le Faou, 2 of which have covered verandas for al fresco dining. Brasserie les Halles serves traditional French fare with the obligatory 'plat du jour' of superb value. Every dish is beautifully cooked and the service is excellent. Next door is La Piazza which along with an extensive menu serves fantastic pizzas which are also available to take away (a emporter).

Don't leave without sampling at least one of the 3 creperies which serve a bewildering selecton of fillings for their 'pancakes'.

The restaurant in the hotel La Vieille Renommee is renowned for it's exquisite regional cuisine and superb service. The most discerning of gastronomes will not be disappointed by the first class quality and presentation of food served by chef Monsieur Camus.

Worth a trip to enjoy a gourmet seafood feast on the other side of the estuary is 'Les Viviers de Terenez',10 minutes away. They will also sell you live crustaceans if you prefer to prepare them yourself.

Not forgetting the all-important 'cave' for the discerning wine buffs amongst you! There's also a large supermarket within a 5-minute drive and a hypermarket within 10 minutes.

Le Faou is situated within the beautiful Armorique nature reserve and is a superb base for exploring the Crozon peninsula with it's beautiful long sandy beaches, dramatic coastline, fascinating little fishing ports and breathtaking scenery. Days out must also include sampling the incredibly extensive selection of local seafood on offer, but if you don't want to travel too far you can even collect oysters at the high-tide line along the shore at the bottom of the garden instead!

Other Activities: birdwatching

Golf: In a natural setting, just a few miles away from the Monts d'Arrée and the Brest Roadstead, come and discover the Brest Iroise championship golf course. Designed by the excellent Michael Fenn, its varied layout and its high quality fairways and greens make it one of the region's most challenging and enjoyable courses. Following the pure tradition of the best Scottish golf courses, it is both wild and natural.

The Brest Iroise golf course is nestled in a 600 acres park. It is easy to reach, being only 9.5 miles from Estuary House.

The golf course of Brest Iroise is part of the Golfy network. The new club house, inaugurated in Nov 2010 is ready to warmly welcome you.

Come and visit us in all seasons. Enjoy the wonderful nature, the delicate cuisine, the culture and walks along the coast and play your favorite sport on 3 stunning courses.

The house with everything

5 of 5
Submitted: June 6, 2011 Stayed: May 2011
What a fantastic house, it really does have everything. The house itself is huge and very well equipped. We had 3 different families staying and we never felt under eachothers feet. The ever changing views of the garden and estuary from almost every window are outstanding. But if we were impressed with the house then the garden was even better. It too is huge but from the vantage point of the balcony we were able to keep a close eye on all the children all the way to the bottom of the garden. The pool was probably the highlight of the holiday for the children and was easily big enough to accommodate us all at the same time.
I cannot recommend estuary house high enough for a holiday whether it be as a base for exploring the lovely surrounding countryside or somewhere to relax and enjoy everything it has to offer

A Perfect Holiday

5 of 5
Submitted: April 21, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
This was our first trip to Brittany for annual family Easter holiday – it did not disappoint. Estuary House provides superb accommodation – the views across the estuary are amazing. Its location provides an excellent base for exploring the Crozon Peninsula and the many beautiful beaches. We did most of our shopping in Le Faou , which has a range of small shops (the patisserie is particularly recommended) , restaurants and a good supermarket.
Estuary House itself provided every comfort and is very well equipped (the best that I have come across). The guide books put together by the owners were extremely useful – one of the many little touches that make Estuary House such a joy to stay in. Best of all though were the first floor balcony, the ground floor decking area, the large garden (which stretches right down to the shore) and the swimming pool. Although the weather was unseasonably cold during our stay , we used the swimming pool most days – the wetsuits that we had brought with us were invaluable!
All in all, a big hit with grandparents, children and grandchildren. Thank you for a great holiday.

Great House, shame about the weather

5 of 5
Submitted: April 5, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
Along with our Labrador, we spent two weeks at Estuary House in March 2013. Communication with the owner was excellent throughout and the directions provided made the house extremely easy to find; exactly what was needed at the end of a long but relatively easy drive from Calais.

The house provided extensive facilities (including well a stocked Library of books, videos and DVDs) - just as described on the owner’s web site; though owing to the wet and cold weather we experienced, we weren’t able to enjoy the large garden, pool and permanent barbecue as much as we would have wished. In that context, the first floor large open plan Lounge/Diner (opening onto a balcony running all along the rear of the property) with its views over the ever changing estuary came into its own, particularly with use of the telescope provided. The only slight downside would be to guests having some physical impairment; the accommodation is over 4 floors and so there are a number of internal stairs but once in the Lounge area there is no need to use stairs other than to go into the garden, leave the property or go to bed!

We found the ground floor integral garage (and external hose-pipe!) very useful in cleaning off the estuary mud and drying the dog before entering the house. The utility room next to the garage was vital in getting the many wet dog towels and our ’wet weather’ gear dry. Wellies are strongly recommended when exploring the estuary as low water exposes mud-flats.

The owners provided a vast amount of information in both the ‘house book’ and the area guides; the presentation of that information was one of the best we have seen in any of the French houses we have rented. The information had been organised into 4 ring binders, one each for activities North, South, East and West of Le Faou. Each page had been laminated allowing these binders to be used outside in all weathers when exploring the surrounding region. That region offered plenty to see and do, though given the weather we found the car to be essential l– warmer and drier weather would have allowed more of the area to be explored on foot.

For dog owners, two vet practices are in Le Faou – we used the practice near to Super U for our dog’s ‘PETS’ treatment and that vet’s English was better than our French!

Despite the weather, we enjoyed Estuary House very much. We would return and recommend this property to anyone seeking a peaceful environment in an interesting part of France
Owner's Response: So sorry, you must have experienced the wettest Spring on record! I do hope you'll be able to visit Le Faou again in better weather, but I'm glad Estuary House was able to cope with whatever was thrown at it! Kathy

Estuary House in October

5 of 5
Submitted: October 23, 2012 Stayed: October 2012
We have stayed in many rental houses and I have to say that for comfort and it's position on the Faou estuary it matches and even surpasses many of them. The delightful walks on the Crozon peninsula are unsurpassed and even though our weather was pretty unclement it never stopped us from exploring the many delights of the area. The nearby restaurants, especially "Les Halles " produced good regional dishes at reasonable prices. Anyone who loves seafood will be in seventh heaven! Again, avid birdwatchers will be amazed at the variety that can be seen from the comfort of the living room.

All in all we cannot wait to return hopefully next year.

When I approached the owner to ask if they would let a group of 9 male mature motorcyclists use the house for a week I was expecting a hesitant response, but nothing of the sort.

The house accommodated all nine of us in separate beds (an essential requirement) quite easily and the facilities were superb. The house was spotless and ready for us even though we arrived about an hour early. The weather during our stay was variable from grey and overcast to raining almost every day (what an awful summer we've had so far) but we did manage to use the pool a couple of times. When we did we didn't want to get out, as it was warmer in the water than out of it (28 degrees). We also managed to use the BBQ a couple of times and eat outside taking in the view.

The kitchen is very well equipped and our couple of budding Masterchef's found everything they needed to prepare some gourmet meals for the group.

There are plenty of DVD's and Videos, games, books etc for entertainment but I do suggest that you take your own favourites along with you as well. Whilst we had no need of such things there did appear to be plenty of children's toys both for the pool and the garden.

The drive held our nine motorcycles with ease but has quite a slope on it which was a little tricky to turn them around but we managed ok. I would think it would hold 2/3 cars with ease. The laundry and drying room is a bonus and was a Godsend for us.

We used the restaurants in Le Faou on a couple of occasions and found them ok but nothing special. Our in-house chefs were much better. The large hotel in the centre, I forget it's name was definitely overpriced for the standard of food offered. We couldn't get into the restaurant next door to the pizzeria which many guests had recommended but we did try the pizzeria which was cheap and cheerful. The owner was very friendly and his house rose did go down well.

We used the SuperU supermarket on the edge of town everyday for fresh provisions. It is convenient and well stocked but a little pricey when compared to the likes of L'eclerc but it is a 10-15 minute drive to the nearest one.

Because of the weather we didn't travel around as much as we would have liked. The Crozon Peninsular is well worth a visit, as is a run up to Morlaix. If you want beaches then you'll have to be prepared to get in the car for at least a 15- 20min drive I should think.

Would we recommend Estuary House? Definitely, whatever the make up of your group.
