Monflanquin is a beautiful medieval hilltop `bastide` village, situated some 40k south of Bergerac. It is classified as `L`un des plus beax villages de France` and voted `one of the top 10 villages of France` by the Daily Telegraph travel writers. The local economy is essentially agricultural, with farmers growing large quantities of maize and sunflowers. The climate also favours the growing of grapes, strawberries, melons, fruits, nuts and tomatoes. The gently rolling countryside is dotted with chateaux and 13th. century `bastide` hilltop villages. The Lot et Garonne, our department, is just south of the Dordogne, and to the west of the Lot, so is ideal for the exploration of all these river valleys, rich in history and beautiful scenery. It really is a historical treat. Ideally situated for visits to : Bergerac, Monpazier, Isisgeac, St. Emilion, Cahors, Domme etc. Golfers might like to check out the beautiful and challenging `Castelnaud Golf` on google.

Further details for this vacation cottage rental in Monflanquin area, France

Monflanquin: This is a beautiful mediaeval hilltop `bastide` village, classified as `l`un des plus beaux villages de France` and elected as one of the top 10 villages of France by the Daily Telegraph travel writers. When one sees the beautiful, vaulted archways surrounding the central square, one can understand why. It is a thriving village supporting all the required services - bank, post office, doctors, butcher, bakers, bars and a wide choice of restaurants. There is also a good sized `casino` supermarket.

Exploring: For those who like to explore, then day visits to Cahors, Bergerac, Issigeac, Monpazier, Domme, Les Eyzies and St. Emilion are all possible. Our colourful local markets are always worth a visit.

Activities: These include tennis, golf, cycling, walking, horse riding and canoeing - not forgetting the local Boules area. If all this is too much, then simply do what most of our visitors do - just relax by the pool.... `Volets Bleus` is the very private wing of our own home. On the 1.5 acre site, is a further cottage with 2 bedrooms and two bathrooms. Visitors share the 11 by 5 m. pool. The tiled terrace is large, so there is plenty of room. Each property has its own terrace, which is totally private, ensuring our visitors total peace and quiet. We have lived here for almost 20 years, so know the area and the local people well. Holiday makers will receive a friendly welcome. For those looking to buy property or land, and to renovate or build from scratch, I can offer help, advice and services.

Other Activities: Visits to many beautiful mediaeval hilltop villages are just a short drive away.

Dave & Sue - August/September 2009

The Ferrets Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK.
Review Submitted: September 6, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Just reurned from yet another fantastic weeks holiday in Monflanquin. This is our 8th visit and our 4th time in the Cottage. The cottage has literally everything you need to make you feel at home and we start relaxing the minute we walk through the door.
Anything extra we do need is usually sorted out by our wonderful hosts Pat & Pryce, who continue to make every visit special. This time Pat introduced us to a new medication for memory loss as well as cooking a Shepherds Pie to make sure we got good weather! We also had a fantastic BBQ evening on their terrace with friends.
Our duaghters were with us this year so we did a canoeing trip close by at Castelmoron for old times sake. The rest of the hols were about relaxing and enjoying the fantastic restaurants up in the town square - just a 10 minute walk away.
We'll be back again.
Owner's Response: A really lovely family who are always most welcome.
They made their first visit to us some 15 years ago when their daughters were 10 and 12 years old. At 25 and 27, Helen and Kathryn still love it here, and didn`t want to leave - so I guess they quite like it....

a great holiday hideaway

jennifer and Mark Brussels, Belgium
Review Submitted: September 6, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
This is our second trip to Monflaquin and to Pryce and Pat as last year we stayed in Les Volets Bleus and enjoyed it so much that we persuaded our friends to join us this year.
The cottage did not disappoint and was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. (It was great to have 2 bathrooms! )
Pat and Pryce are on hand with helpful advice and wonderful fresh produce from their garden. The village is a delight and just a short stroll away.
The perfect spot with lots of places to visit and a great pool area for just soaking up the sun and relaxing. Local rose wine also helps!
Owner's Response: Jennifer and Mark have enjoyed staying in both our properties, and have persuaded friends to join them, which is obviously a good sign. They have a long holiday next Summer, so we hope they return.
Yes, the second bathroom in `The Cottage`, does prove very useful.

A wonderful holiday in excellent accommodation

Alison and Jeff Chorley, Lancashire
Review Submitted: August 20, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We have just returned from a two week holiday in August 2009, staying in the Cottage and it was brilliant. What a find!! The weather was very kind and we had some very restful days , reading and sitting around the lovely pool, but also travelling around to view different villages and towns. The pool area is lovely, providing plenty of shade when the sun gets too hot and pretty gardens all around.
The Cottage, which has a beautiful setting, was the best equipped we have ever stayed in, with everything we could possibly need.
Pat and Pryce were so welcoming and friendly that we felt at ease straight away. Their knowledge and advice on the area was invaluable when deciding where to visit. The added bonus to be able to pick and use fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs was a pure delight.
The town of Monflanquin, was beautiful and only an easy fifteen minute walk, the evening gathering on Thursday in the square, eating local food and drinking local wine was an experience not to be missed.
This is an area and an accommodation we would very happily visit again.
Owner's Response: Alison and Jeff stayed in `The Cottage` with their good friends, Alison and Joe. They all loved `The Cottage`, the pool, the garden, and picking the fresh veg. Periods of relaxing on the terrace and swimming in the pool, were interspersed with visits to the many local beauty spots in this area. They really did enjoy their stay, and left in a very relaxed frame of mind - ready to return next year?

First Rate Property in a Superb Location

Mike, Janet and Caroline United Kingdom
Review Submitted: August 10, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
On arrival we found the cottage to be just as described, fully equipped, clean and well maintained.
The location of the Cottage is superb. Being on the edge on Monflanquin we were able to enjoy uninterrupted views across open countryside. Yet it was only a few minutes walk to the centre of this attractive medieval 'Bastide' village. It was an even shorter distance to the local Patisserie.
Pat and Pryce who look after the Cottage on behalf of the owners were very attentive before and during our stay and kept the surroundings, including garden and swimming pool, in tip top condition. Having Pat and Pryce on hand to provide help and advice proved to be a bonus.
The location of the property is ideally situated for touring the many Bastide villages in the area, such as Pujols and Penne d'Agenaise, which are within 30 minutes motoring distance from the property. Trips further afield (up to 1 hours drive) that we enjoyed included Bergerac, Cahors, the central section of the Dordogne, and the Vezere. We particularly enjoyed canoeing down the latter two rivers - a 'must do' activity for this area (no previous experience necessary).
We developed a daily routine of taking a trip out by car, setting of reasonably early in the morning, returning late afternoon to have a refreshing swim in the pool. This worked well and avoided most of the other tourists at the 'honeypot' sites that we visited. There is so much to do and see in the area that over the fortnight we did not have to repeat any of our excursions. One activity we did repeat, though, was to spend Thursday evening at the Evening market in Monflanquin when the place became alive with people, food, wine and music (another 'must do').
There are plenty of local bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. We found the Grappe du Raison, La Baldoria (Pizzeria), and the bar in the Place d'Arts Cade provided good value simple fare (which suited the family).
All in all we had a most enjoyable holiday. Thank you Pat and Pryce for being such great hosts.
Owner's Response: Mike and Janet were very happy to do a review, but with a trace of reluctance, as they didn`t want other people to know how nice it was, so making it more difficult to re-book! We would quite often meet up in our organic vegetable garden, where they enjoyed being able to pick any fresh vegetables that were available.
They made many interesting trips - and, with daughter Caroline, really did enjoy their Thursday evening `fling`....
I think we may see them back - and they would certainly be very welcome.

Superb!

Colin & Kay Oakley, Hampshire, UK
Review Submitted: July 20, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Over the years we have taken several cottage holidays in France and, without a doubt, this has proved to be the best of all by quite some distance.

The location is excellent - extensive and far-reaching panoramic views over beautiful countryside - we even sighted a number of deer during our stay. A fifteen minute walk into the lovely bastide village of Monflanquin with its lovely buildings. There are sufficient shops to buy food if you are self catering and, also, a decent choice of restaurants. There is also a very friendly bar.

There are many other pretty villages within a short drive - larger towns worth visiting are Cahors and Bergerac which are a little further away but easily accessible.

However, you may not feel like driving too far, on the basis that, not only are there lovely walks within the local area but the cottage is so good you may just wish to idle your time away on the terrace reading a book and taking an occasional swim in the pool. The cottage really could not be faulted and is exactly as described on the website. It was spacious, spotlessly clean and very well equipped.

Finally, a special word about our "hosts" - Pat and Pryce. They were unobtrusively helpful and they take a huge pride in the cottage and the gite. It was a real pleasure to make their acquaintance We would certainly visit again which is something we would not normally do. We can highly recommend it.
Owner's Response: Not quite sure how to respond to this review - except to say it was very much appreciated! Colin and Kay obviously loved their experience here. They certainly enjoyed the friendly bar, as we kept meeting them there...
From `The Cottage` terrace, our visitors do see deer, fox, hoopoe and kite. Again, we hope to see them back.
