Further details for this vacation villa rental in Gandia, Spain

Something different - Romance and Adventure : 30 minutes from blue flag (duned) beaches at Gandia & Oliva. Nestling in the 'Circ de La Safor', a breathtaking limestone Caldera, featuring 'La Finestra' (Valenciano for 'the window' - the hole at near top of La Safor 1013m). 'Casa de la Finestra' is approached by a lush, wooded, wildflower strewn, adventurous track. The house stands 10m above the river Serpis (teeming with trout, carp & barbel), as it tumbles out of the wooded gorge of El Raco del Duc; great swimming. Next to the house, the disused-railway trail from Gandia to Alcoi, forms an eco-tourist route [warranting an entry in 'Lonely Planet Guide': Gandia]. 16km of unsurpassed scenery, waterfalls, birds, flora & fauna, following the river's course. It's a paradise for walkers & cyclists of ALL abilities, anglers, bird watchers, botanists, geologists, climbers, mountaineers and don't forget children! Golf course/8km. All will find this area spellbinding. More pictures? Join 'Friends of Casa de La Finestra' on www.facebook.com.

Flora & Forna: Sit in the comfort of the 'panorama' kitchen and count kingfishers, egrets and purple herons; daily visitors! Marvel at the antics of crag martins, swallows & bats as they admire their reflections in the windows and the pool. Watch out for hoopoes, red kites, peregrines and eagles. At night, framed in the arches of the kitchen windows, the sun sets and moon rises over El Raco Del Duc. You'll be enthralled by the chorus of frogs and cicadas and enchanted by the song of the nightingale. Pine martens, otters & wild boar are native here. Butterflies, insects, lizards and geckos will delight you. Walking along the disused railway trail, you will discover a myriad of flowers you're used to seeing cultivated in gardens, only here, they're wild, as nature intended, orchids, hyacinths, lilies, succulents, cacti, sweet peas, fennel, thyme, rosemary, cistus, lillies, bamboo & oleander. In this limestone wilderness we are blessed with unbelievable diversity of flora, fauna & geology second to none

History: El Raco del Duc (see Google) means 'the retreat of the Duke', the father of Lucretia Borgia & grandfather of the Borgia Pope. The disused railway from the Ducal town of Gandia to Alcoi, was built by the British to bring coal from Newcastle, to fuel the textile industry. Only the flat wooded path remains, punctuated by five exciting tunnels, ideal for cycling and walking; ALL abilities. Ten minutes walk from the house is a magical place where the track meets the river Serpis. Here is the shrine of 'Mare de Deu de la Font', a pilgrimage site where a 15 century wood cutter, discovered a wooden casket floating upstream. Inside he found a statue of the Virgin. Below the crags are lagoons to fish & swim in or just float in the healing waters among fish, birds and flowers, like an `endless` pool. A tile in our kitchen depicts the scene. Wanting something more intrepid? You only need to wander off the green track to discover routes up the mountain to 'La Finestra' and La Safor itself (1013m).

Other Activities: Quad-biking, gorge-walking, climbing, cayaking/canoeing, white-water rafting, flamenco, wine-tasting, cooking, painting.

Before I comment about my recent stay at your home, I would just like to say thank you Trixie and Allan for your warm hospitality and friendship, It's hard to find these days and it was just what I needed.

I loved the overall relaxed feeling and easygoingness and the homemade cooking, very comforting!! It's been a while since I had a "kick back" and relaxed break and I will be back again for more of the same!! keep up the honest approach to your business, that's why I will be coming back. Looking forward to seeing you both soon and thanks again for everything.

Can't say enough good things about our stays at Trixie and Allan's. We've been there 3 times now and each time we have been so well looked after! The house has all the home comforts you need and is really cozy. The peace all around means you can have a true holiday - FAR away from the rat race. Children are particularly welcome here with a children's bedroom full of books and toys and, of course, the swimming pool. Trixie's home baking is also a real winner with my daughter!! Many many thanks for making us so welcome. Looking forward to our next stay!

'Heaven really is a place on Earth'

Kirsty and Graham Horley. Surrey
Review Submitted: August 6, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
If ever one week was not enough, then this was it.

Casa De La Finestra was everything our family of five could wish for and more. Nothing appeared too much trouble for Trixie and Allan. The House of the Windows is perfectly positioned for 24 hour senses overload. Sunshine and heat by day, fantastic moon and stars by night, best viewed from the pool. The scenery is breathtaking, every corner turned there is another fabulous view.

Walks, tracks, climbs, the tunnels, the river/pool in which to constantly cool off in. Birds, lizards, (pigs, not seen but alot of noise heard in a bush), insects, flora and fauna are abundant. The most at home, away from home, you could feel.

Regrets for me, forgot to bring my binoculars and did not bring my bike (next time). For the rest of my family none, except it was not long enough.

Our two boys (14 and 12) loved exploring the local area, fishing the river, walking the tunnels, and playing in the pool but they mostly appreciated Trixies cooking and baking and we sampled one of her delicious cakes and paella.

We enjoyed the fact that there was no mains electricity, there was every convenience at the house, the generator was at our disposal and could always be turned on, even for the children to watch a dvd, however we mostly liked it off, eating by candlelight and viewing the stars. It made it more magical and showed our children a new way of life without constant computer games.

We left Casa del la Finestra having made new friends with Trixie and Allan. We will be back again soon. Thankyou.

Power challenges

AV&GRB Seattle, USA
Review Submitted: June 22, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2008
Be aware, villa has power supply by generator only. Bringing flashlights is not only for exploring the tunnels.
AV & GRB
Owner's Response: We live in a beautiful "Natural Park" without access to mains electricity. We have always offered power to our guests whenever they required it. We now have a second generator (plus two reserves!). The main generators, each producing in excess of 6kva (more than available here from the 'mains'!); each can run for up to twelve hours per day. They are situated out of sight, in buildings down five terraces some thirty metres below the villa. The new generator can be switched on and off from the main kitchen. The original 'genny' has recently had a new motor and alternator (i.e. it's also all new!). We service and maintain all this equipment, so there's nothing for guests to worry about.
The fridge/freezer and constant hot water system are independent of the generator. There are two rechargeable portable table lights in each bedroom, so you do only need to bring flashlights (torches) for exploring the tunnels!
Trixie and Allan.
