Note:

Montecastello was in a state of ruin when purchased in 2003 and has been restored with much consideration to traditional detail with the help of modern day techniques. In the locality this well known unique Tuscan stone house with castello crenellated tower sits at home in its wood land estate. However, the interior have been created to represent Tuscan style with modern day creature comforts. The sumptuous fabrics and soft furnishings give that true feeling of Italy and Italian style. The warm earth colours of the decor give a sense of tradition yet well being, an instant generous welcome as soon as you walk through the medieval stone arched doorway. Each room has been carefully thought through to offer all essentials for the perfect home from home holiday. One quote comes to mind written in our guest book 'an exquisite home, everyday we discover something new in the house for our use, you have taken so much care providing everything one would need for their comfort'. Brian & Jacky

Further Details:

Montecastello is ideally positioned for a wide variety of local amenities, either shopping for produce within the local comunity or venturing a little further for the daily market of fresh fruit/veg/cheese/salami/ham/bread and fish in the centre of the local port of La Spezia. The Lunigiana wine route cuts through an extraordinary variety of landscapes looking out on the sea or up to the marble peaks of the Apuans whilst generally meandering through rolling countryside.

We recommend LVNAE(LUNI) winery as a definite "must do". Situated just outside the nearby fortified town of Sarzana. Lvnae wines specialize in the local are wines and famous for their vermentino whites. The winery is very interesting with museum, tastings, tours and bookable wine appreciation classes.

Also close by in the historic castello town of Pontremoli is a shop that buys and sells all local funghi (mushrooms) such as the famed Porcini. They provide expert advice on all edible varieties. This town has many interesting shops and restaurants.

Day walking through the local hills and mountains is very popular here with stunning views and a wide variety of flora and forna to see. Above Montecastello are natural lakes, ideal for a picnic on a hot summer's day where here the temperature is a little cooler. There is also a childrens (supervised) adventure centre operating through the summer months at the local ski resort of Prato Spilla. The ski lift also operates for those who wish to trek along the Apuan peaks where the views are astounding.

For the energetic, bicycle hire operates from our nearest town of Licciana Nardi just 6 kilometers away.

Boat/yacht hire operates from the costal towns of La Spezia and Bocca di Magra some 40mins away.We can also hire a boat on your behalf for an unforgettable day out.

'WOW' ***

Montecastello is the most wonderful place to stay with family or friends. It is beautifully positioned in wonderful mountainous countryside for fabulous walks and amazing views yet within easy reach of shopping facilities for supplies, drinks and eating out. The villa is beautifully laid out, decorated and furnished - extremely comfortable with everything you need. I particularly loved the various patio areas in the sun at different times of the day - I love early mornings in the sun - and, of course, the pool. One of my favourite places was the Terrazzo in the evenings looking out over the atmospherically light pool. The whole place is very much as the virtual tours I saw on the website just with a few updates. The whole atmosphere is of luxury with comfort, relaxing and with that 'wow' factor. Ally and Martin have thought about and provided everything for a super holiday experience and are brilliant hosts to help if required. Eating out at La Torre - walking distance if so inclined - was fabulous and an absolute must. Our visit to the coast was a very memorable experience - lovely beach and lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. Not far from the fabulous city of Pisa - what more could you want. Brilliant.

Montecastello Heaven

  • 5 of 5
Two heavenly weeks right at the end of the summer season, blessed with the most gorgeous weather 27C hot sunny days spent lazing at the pool, down on the San Terezano beach or in La Specia. The 'track' directly behind Montecastello offered walks ranging from easy peasy 30 minute loops right through to challenging 4 and 5 hours vertical climbs. Montecastello is stunningly beautiful - like walking into an Architectural Digest cover piece. Alison and Martin are excellent hosts, great communications from the moment we booked to the day we arrived with fresh flowers etc to greet us until the day we left. Nothing was too much trouble. Thanks Ally & Martin we will be back next year, can't wait!

Italian paradise

We stayed for a week at montecastello - what a wonderful location! The villa is beautiful, finished to a fantastic standard and ideally placed for a relaxing stay. The gardens and pool are lovely for lazing around (breathing in fresh lavender is pretty soporific!) and the surrounding countryside and views are fabulous. Martin and Ally are on site and really helpful with local tips. We visited the local Italian restaurant up on the hill - had a fabulous meal, overlooking beautiful scenery and then rolled back down at the end of the night! We also very much enjoyed a day in the bay of la spezia with Skipper Martin. Would highly recommend a stay here - loved it!
