A bright, private and spacious one bedroom flat set in a charming residential area of Funchal with swimming pool, garden, barbecue and terrace. Very private as there is ample space for sunbeds on either side of the pool. Garden has organic herbs that you can use, the 2 flats have private barbecues, with wood & coal supplied. Large living room, with fully equipped Kitchenette including stove, fridge, microwave, UK satellite & LCD TV. Bathroom with WC, bath/shower. Swimming pool is shared with main house and both cottages although the atmosphere is very private and tropical, different areas with deck chairs, parasols and sub-tropical plants surrounding pool. No neighbors can look on. Perfect area near Funchal city centre (historic old quarter) and sea within walking distance (10min walking). Bus stop 15 mts of front door. Decoration is modern and comfortable, with quality white cotton bedlinen and towels provided, full of light and a friendly atmosphere. No need for air conditioning

Located in Funchal city centre (just by the historic old quarter), the sea is within walking distance (5-10 min walking down a steep road). The cottage is located in a charming residential area of Funchal, surrounded by traditional houses with lovely gardens. Be prepared for garden lizards, and other sub-tropical friends which are normal in this climate. Funchal market is just down the road within walking distance as is the old town with all the restaurants, cable car and shops. Palheiro golf course within 10min car ride. Bus stop within 15 metres of front door.

Notes: Several times top performer on Holiday Rentals for the Madeira region, this property has been a big hit with couples and friends wishing an authentic experience in Madeira, in a charming residential area of Funchal. We have made the Pool and Painters Cottage available for self catering holidays for 4 years now, and they are constantly improved due to feed back from our guests. There is an excellent local bakery and grocer up the road, the Funchal market is a 10min walk down the road and we even provide a trolley to bring your shopping back. A washing machine is available, as well as an iron, ironing board and hairdryer. We can book tee-times at both golf courses. The owner is half British and half Portuguese so can give good tips on what to do and where to go, so you can enjoy your Madeira experience to the utmost. The climate in this area of Funchal close to the sea is specially mild and sunny, a couple of meters higher up (over the 200m level) the weather can be colder and misty.

Levada walks, golf and swimming nearby: The cottage is the ideal base to explore the beautiful island of Madeira, its strategic location in the heart of Funchal means it is just by the seaside were you can swim, water ski, scuba dive, sail and much more. The 2 golf courses are very near, Palheiro Golf is just 10min away and Santo da Serra Golf is just 20min away. Madeira is a walkers paradise and from here you can reach the mountains and discover the levada trails. A bus stop is just 10 metres below the house, and the main road to the airport is very easy to catch.

We rent the Pool Cottage in September for a fortnight. A great place to relax under banana trees with a fantastic view to the mountains and the habour. And spectacular at night when the streetlights swichted on. The fotos are vey realistic and will give you a good idea of the property. The owner and her house keeper supported us excellent and very kind. Thanks! Funchal is very steep, but in front of the main house is a good bus transfer to the city center of Funchal an backwards, what will be more important. Use the bus line no. 31, 31a, 34, 37 and 39 (not no. 38 – the route changed meanwhile). Hopefully we could come back sometimes and enjoy again the nice cottage and the great nature of Madeira.
PS: don´t forget the anti-mosquito-lotion. They sting bei night and DAY!

Wonderful holiday

We came to escape the cold winter at home, and found a delightful home, much better than the photographs suggest, which is a first! There are nice touches everywhere, the decoration is light and very attractive with vibrant local fabrics. Equipment is new like the modern LCD television has UK channels like BBC1, BBC2. and lots more. Outside and around the pool is a tropical oasis with banana trees, and a couple of herbs we could use in the kitchen such as coriander, basil, lemon grass..all organic. There is a large barbecue, and we did use it once as we had dinner outside.
The British owner very kindly gave us all the help we needed with information and suggestions. The walk down into the old town takes about 10minutes, getting back up is another matter, but there are plenty of buses and taxis are quite affordable. This part of Funchal is unspoilt, there are no towering buildings and touristic traps. Its all authentic Madeiran with gardens, friendly groceries, bakeries, and always the stunning sea just in front. We loved our stay, and we´re coming back later this year with friends who will stay in the Painters.

This is the second year we return to the pool cottage, and we would just like to send a great thank you to the owners. Our stay is always special, the location is great, we walk everywhere even though some of the roads are steep, and when we feel tired we take the nº32 bus directly to the centre of Funchal by the sea or back. The area around the pool is spacious and we have it mostly to ourselves, we had several barbecues, wood and coal is provided and we grilled several exotic fish from the market. Banana trees give shade and make it feel like an oasis. The rooms are spacious, full of light from the full length windows but curtains and blinds on hand to make it totally private if we wanted. Kitchenette has the basic things needed, and everything was clean and well maintained. From the pool terrace we had a nice view of the bay of Funchal which we didn´t expect the first time. Its a casual friendly place that we feel totally at home in, there are no touristy things in this older neighborhood and we feel like true local each time we come. The climate at this level by the sea is warm, there is always some sun during the day even if it rains. Next year will be our third time back to the pool cottage.
