The island of Kea lies in the northern part of the Cyclades, and can be reached by ferry boat from the port of Lavrio on the continent. The trip takes an hour.
Little known by tourists, it mainly attracts the Greek, and especially Athenians who have built some elegant houses there.
The main port of Korissia is situated in a habour that is considered one of the safest in the Mediterranean.
A short distance away is Vourkari, another marina in the Gulf of Agios Nicolaos (St Nicolas)
From the main harbour, a road winds up through numerous hills and reaches the island's chief place, Ioulis, built on slopes in the typical Cyclades anphitheatre fashion. The white houses with coloured shutters, the maze of cobbled alleyways, and the numerous chapels and churches of this village captivate the visitor's eye. The views in the direction of neighbouring islands are stunning.
