Anatoli Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

2 houses with 5 bedrooms sleep 16 persons total

The property comprises2 individual historic houses, recently restored with personal air and character. They combine the lost qualities of traditional housing with modern facilities and luxury. The PASIPHAE HOUSE is 185 m² with 3 double bedrooms, sitting and dinning rooms, Kitchen and 2 bathrooms, accommodating up to 8 persons, while SMARAGDA HOUSE is 56m2 , with one double bedroom and sitting room, accomodating from 2-4 persons. Both houses have beautiful courtyards and top terraces, catching from everywhere stunning views to the sea. The houses have been exquisitely detailed and furnished with authentic pieces from Neoclassical Greece. They have fully equipped kitchens and bathrooms, while they are open all year around, having central heating, air conditioning and fireplaces. They are ideal for people looking for privacy and deep relaxation, while being close to some of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Eastern Crete.

THE VILLAGE: The semi mountainous landscape of this village is different from the sea landscape and worth visiting. Its formation is very picturesque combining olive tree groves, sculptured rock formations and spectacular views to the sea. The village is ideal for people looking for privacy, deep relaxation and sea activities

The village, a very old settlement from Venetian Times, is located at 600m altitude and has been famous from ancient times for its healthy, dry climate. It is surrounded by forests and beautiful and gigantic rocks, has many natural water springs (from where Anatoli takes water) and many places of natural beauty to explore, either by walking, by mountain bike or by car.

As the village is built against a steep slope, car access is restricted. The houses are surrounded by walkways, while the main road and parking area are at a distance of 15-30 m.

The village consists mainly of houses in some of which can still be found donkeys, chicken, cats, etc. It has not been exploited touristicly since there is an active cultural society aiming at sustainable development.

MANOLI'S TAVERN - on the main upper main road of the village - local, simple, inexpensive food.

DRYES TAVERN - 11/2 km east of Anatoli, on the road to Kalamafka - The tavern is set against a rock with water spring, huge trees and panoramic view to Ierapetra offers excellent Cretan food.

KALAMAFKA VILLAGE - 5 km east of Anatoli-a village known for its taverns with good, inexpensive food.

VILLA MALES – in the village MALLES west of ANATOLI - a new Coffee-Restaurant House with very good light Cretan cuisine.

IERAPETRA CITY: Water front laid out as an esplanade with bars, restaurants, coffee houses, pizza, fish tavernas etc In the area of the old fortress I distinguish the Napoleon tavern with certified Cretan Cuisine and Gorgona tavern with fresh seafood.

Sandy beaches extend either to the northeast (the gulf of Mirabello), or to the southeast (Libyan Sea), reachable within 20 min. At KALO CHORIO (ancient site “Istron”gulf of Mirabello) is found one of the most famous beaches of Crete with azure, shallow waters, called “VOULISMA”, while east of Ierapetra extend kilometers of sandy beaches and small sea gulfs, marked with BLUE FLAG, among which the best are AGIA GALINI (next is Kakkos Bay Hotel, laid out in another beautiful gulf and open to the public),AGIA FOTIA, FERMA, KOUTSOUNARI etc.

This part of Crete has some of the most renowned monuments

Archaeological site is ZAKROS (the fourth palatine site of Minoan Crete). Descend to the seashore picturesque village of Nea Zakros, for swimming and eating in isolation.

Minoan city is LATO, flourished during classical and Hellenistic periods, is located on the outskirts of Agios Nicolaos, where you can admire the model of planning of an archaic Greek city, also recognizable in Roman cities, and depicted, as prevailing idea in cities through ages, even close to modern times (ex. Regency Street, London as an attractive city spine with monuments).

GOURNIA, excavated recently (1900) also in a beautiful landscape.

On the way to Lato, stop at the Byzantine Church of PANAGIA KERA, all frescoed 13th- 14th century in pre renaissance style, before it flourished in the West with the fall of Constantinople.

MONI TOPLOU, frescoed 14th c. medieval monastery and important castle stronghold during Venetian times. Swim in famous VAI BAY with fine sand and Palm trees and visit Itanos, the last eastern city of Minoan times.

Palaikastro, a Minoan village and a hellenistic sanctuary, devoted to Zeus Diktaius. It has an impressive site by the seashore.

The PSYCHRO or DIKTAION CAVE, an impressive archaeological site as well as of natural beauty. A Minoan to Archaic period sanctuary of Zeus.

SPINALOGA CASTLE- fortified island (from Venetian times, now a museum area).

CHRISSI ISLAND (Golden island) Ierapetra port:-One day excursion to this tiny island famous for its golden, sand beaches

IOANNA DOROVINIS is an architect (M.Sc. Columbia Un. NYC), specialist in Conservation of Historic Buildings and Settlements (M.A. York Un.UK), with a PhD in History of Architecture.

The village of ANATOLI in Ierapetra Crete was the last stop in her long journey for the safeguard of Cretan Architectural Heritage, for which she has devoted the last 20 years of her career by the Ministry of Planning, Department of Traditional Settlements.

When she first visited the village, in 1997, in an autumn rainy day, the ruins and the landscape around exerted such strong influence to her that she decided to buy a house in Crete, the PASIPHAE (after the queen of Minoa), and convert it into a family resort. As the merits, beauty and diversity of local architectural patterns were revealed to her, more ruined houses were bought, restored and added to the company’s property, that she formed with her husband, lawyer, historian and political scientist Vassili Dorovinis (KALLIROHE HOUSE-from the water nymph-SMARAGDA HOUSE-the previous owner's typical local name- the AMALTHEIA Coffee House in the old Market street). The company aimed at the protection and the enhancement of local houses by their conversion into outstanding examples of touristic accommodation of Cretan domestic architecture.Today the village is slowly being restored with fine historic architecture since other owners were inspired to save and restore their houses.

She is the writer of many articles concerning architectural heritage, while her doctorate thesis will soon be published under the title “The Domestic Architecture of Mytilene, Lesbos island, (1830-1920) Historical background-City Planning-Architecture”.

Ioanna Dorovinis purchased this chateau / country house in 2004

The semi deserted village of ANATOLI was not chosen by chance. It has the characteristics of a common, semi mountainous traditional village of last century, with simple, severe stone houses, that are tied up together and adjusted to the rocky environment in a unique and marvelous way. The landscape reminds Santorini for the stunning views to the sea and Monemvassia for the amazing sculptured rocky formations.

The location is ideal offering ecological environment while being close to some of the most beautiful -blue flag-sandy beaches of Southeastern Crete, monuments of various historic periods and facilities of city center (Ierapetra).

The sojourn in these houses is further amplified with stylish furnishings and decoration of local and neoclassical pieces, turning them into Art Houses.

This is really a recommendable place to stay and spend a relaxing holiday. This house has been furnished with a lot of love and taste. We were given a warm welcome by both Ioanna (the owner) and her housekeeper Vassiliki. We were surprised that we were provided with breakfast items for the first several days, even though booked self-service. The house is located in lovely small rural "Anatoli" which is a very quite lovely site with a great family run Tavern by Doxa, who served us delicious food. We enjoyed every little tiny bit in the Smaragda house and its surroundings. Everybody was so familiar and nice, that we would not like to leave this place. We definitely, would come back to this place. Thanks a lot Ioanna for this great holiday, we will not forget it. Samar & Vassili

We will be very happy to have you or your relatives and friends again in Anatoli.
