One hour south of Bordeaux lies this stunning area of fragrant pine forests and sun warmed freshwater lakes. Specially constructed cycle tracks lead you through the forest, over the dunes and around the spectacular lakes. To the north is Arcachon, previously a watering hole for the rich Bordelais and famous for its oysters and turn of the century typically French architecture. An hour’s drive to the north are the famous vineyards of the Médoc or St Émilion, where every village name will remind you of a wine label; whilst historic Bordeaux (a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE), with its newly pedestrianised streets, and magnificent floodlit architecture provides the more cultural attractions.
To the south lie the surfing beaches of Mimizan Plage ; Biarritz, with its associations with the 1930's jet set; and picturesque St. Jean de Luz. Just over the border in Spain, visit beautiful San Sebastien, the capitol of the Basque country.
