These two cottages were renovated in 2004 to offer spacious accommodation with traditional Madeiran charm. Situated in lawned gardens with a shared sun terrace and splash pool, they have beautiful views over the ocean and the surrounding village of Arco da Calheta. Accessed from a levada pathway, each cottage comprises a sitting room with sofa bed, dining and kitchen area (one with original bread oven) plus shower room and double or twin bedroom with dressing room. Each cottage also has its own bbq terrace. A Wine Lodge in the garden has been converted into a detached annexe providing a twin bedroom with en-suite shower room which can be rented at the same time as Wisteria House or Garden Cottage to provide additional sleeping accommodation. Any combination of the cottages can be rented to provide a perfect self-catering holiday retreat for groups and families of up to ten people.

This simple rustic cottage was refurbished in 2006 to provide an open plan sitting room, with sofa bed for an extra couple and a fireplace for winter evenings, a kitchen area and shower room downstairs with a charming attic bedroom upstairs. The large attic with twin beds and a second sofa bed makes an ideal family suite. The partly shaded dining terrace in front of the cottage, with a traditional Madeiran wood-fired barbeque, opens on to its own private garden area. Though adequate for holiday purposes, the kitchennette is not equiped for keen 'foodies' and there is no oven.

Wisteria House and Garden Cottage are in the village of Arco da Calheta on the south coast of Madeira, within a few minutes walk from the village centre. Arco is beautifully situated in a natural bowl; surrounded by an arc of mountains and on a terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it benefits from a warm and sunny micro climate. The recent road, tunnel and bridge developments on Madeira have brought Arco to within a 30-minute journey from Funchal and 50 minutes from the airport, both along easy comfortable roads. The village is a charming mix of traditional Madeiran smallholdings and elegant modern holiday villas. The two cottages are placed snugly in a thriving rural area of this working Madeiran village, but still only 10 minutes walk from a cafe, mini supermarket and bakers shop. The white sandy beach at Calheta is only 5 minutes away by car, where there are more cafes, restaurants, banks, the marina and a supermarket.

  • The sleeping arrangements in the attic are flexible. The twin beds are divans which can push together to make a large double bed. Alternatively there is also a double sofa bed for parents, while children can use the twin beds. The attic bedroom has very low windows and therefore is not recommended for very young children. A travel cot is available by arrangement for babies under 6 months.

Notes: The tv is served by a dish tuned to a UK sattelite so it can only access British programs. The washing machine is shared with Wisteria House and is situated in a laundry area near to the splash pool.

Wine Lodge: The Wine Lodge was once an adega where the family's wine was stored with sleeping accommodation above - so there is no internal staircase. The bedroom has been refurbished and a modern en-suite shower room fitted to provide additional sleeping accommodation for two that can be rented as an annexe to either Wisteria House or Garden Cottage. It cannot be rented on its own as it has no kitchen facilities or living room, however it does have its own terrace and madeiran wood-fired BBQ.

A fabulous place to stay!

We stayed in Garden Cottage for a week in March. Colin and Irena were the perfect hosts and the Cottage excellent value for money - spotlessly clean, comfortable and well equipped (including a cool box for packed lunches!). The pool was a lovely additional extra at the end of a hot day of stunning walking!

The location is also superb if you are keen to explore the island by car or on foot.

The recommended restaurant (a short walk down the levada from the cottage) is a must - excellent service and food, and truly romantic, sitting on the veranda with a view over the sea on a balmy evening! Mad Era was also excellent if you fancy a short drive out!

We will be coming back to Madeira again, and Garden Cottage will definitely be the place we stay (that is if it is still run by Colin and Irena!)

In short - I would whole-heartedly recommend!
