Pomar Velho was tastefully renovated to a high spec whilst retaining its ancient rural character. It's spacious inside and is set in 5 acres of agricultural terracing,with a spring and a stream burbling by, a large terrace shaded by an ancient mulberry, orange and lemon trees and kiwi vines for al fresco dining. At the back of the house is the 5m x 10m filtered pool with decking, terraces and stunning views to the São Mamede mountain range. The house has lovely stonework features and original beams throughout the 500 sqm of living space. Perfect for large house parties at any time of year, log burning stoves and central heating make it warm and cosy in the winter whilst the thick ancient stone walls keep you cool in the summer. There are 7 bedrooms, 6 ensuite and one inter-connecting, large dining room with open fire and ancient stone press, two living rooms with log burning stoves, satellite TV, DVD's and a library area. The kitchen is spacious and very well equipped.

Pomar Velho is in the picturesque Natural Park of Sao Mamede. Beautiful scenery, river pools, canoeing and seeking out megalithic monuments or medieval castles and fortresses. Local festivals give a taste of Portuguese culture or you can walk into Spain and experience an entirely different approach to life! Tours of vineyards and wine tasting are easily available and the local restaurants offer good value, traditional gastonomy. An 18 hole golf course is only 5 kms away. Spa treatments also on hand for extra pampering.

18 hole golf course close by. Also close to Spa facilities. Castelo da Vide, Marvão and Portalegre are all recommended for their tourist attractions. The Unesco World Heritage Sites of Évora and Caceres (Portugal/Spain) and Merida's fantastic Roman ruins ( Spain ) are an hour's easy drive away. There are many natural river pools in the area and 4 beautiful, open-air public pools locally at hand. Wine and food lovers can sample traditional Portuguese cuisine at its unspoilt best and wine tasting trips to local vineyards are easily arranged. A few kilometres away is the recently discovered Roman village of Ammaia, not to mention dolmens, standing stones and ancient castles. Visit in Spring when the myriads of wild flowers bloom, in Summer to bathe, relax, enjoy leisurely meals, Autumn to enjoy the walking trails and Winter to visit the chestnut fair and curl up in front of the log burning stove in the evening having enjoyed the brilliant blue of the Iberian sky by day.

Point de chute idéal en Alentejo.

Nous avons quinze jours extraodinaires dans cette ancienne ferme de l'Alentejo (à trois familles, 6 adultes et 7 enfants). La maison et les alentours sont splendides, Marvao tout proche et les nombreux autres sites (villes et villages, chateaux, églises, ...) de la région (coté espagnol ou portuguais) à portée de voiture. La maison elle-même est dans la campagne aux abords d'un village. Elle est très simple et belle. L'intérieur et le jardin sont très agréablement aménagés, d'un point de vue esthetique comme d'un point de vue pratique. L'ensemble très bien entretenu. Et conforme à ce qui est annoncé. S'il faut vraiment trouver un défaut disons que c'est la température de l'eau de la piscine (qui ne nous a pas empêché d'en profiter).

Nous avons alterné journées dans la maison ou aux alentours (campagne environnante, serra, Marvao, Castello de vide, ...) proches et balades plus lointaine dans l'Alentejo ou en Espagne (Evora, Monsaraz, Serra da estrella, Caceres, ... ) trouvé un lot de petits restos et bistro sympathiques, été fascinés par la plupart des villages environnants, bu d'excellents vins, vu de magnifiques églises, visité un hara et assisté à une corrida Portuguaise. Tout le monde était enthousiaste, de 3 à 41 ans.

The description of the house says it all so perfectly that is hard to say much more!
"tastefully renovated whilst retaining its ancient (portuguese) rural character. It's spacious inside"... with... "a large terrace shaded by an ancient mulberry for al fresco dining" (we used it everyday). "The house has lovely stonework features and original beams" (really beautiful)...
Moreover the all house and mainly "the kitchen is super very well equipped". It's really hard to find anything missing.
Also we were offered bikes and other playing possibilities.

We had a great time!

Small tip: if you can manage a bit of portuguese there are some mobile shops coming to the door, one being the baker!! (maybe ask the neighbour)
