QUIET WATERFRONT RETREAT IN ESTATE SETTING

Cambridge Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Your hosts invite you to enjoy a visit to the land that James Michener wrote about in his book 'Chesapeake.' And remember to keep this visit a secret '...lest you awaken the rest of the world as to what a sequestered paradise this place is on the Eastern Shore.' (James Michener)

You will be staying in a charming, waterfront, carriage house located on a five-acre estate with surrounding tall pines and stately cedars. Your living quarters, with private entrance and second-floor balcony, will overlook the pool and English garden below. Queen-size bed with down comforter and memory foam mattress, terry robes, overstuffed seating, antique furniture, and rich oak floors all add to a romantic and homelike ambiance. If you become chilled, just flip on the gas fireplace. Enjoy peace and quiet, observe wildlife, watch the sunrise from the beach, and sip a glass of wine on the dock just before sunset.

Take walks or ride your bicycle along the mile long peninsula road that leads to Deerpond and throughout the surrounding area. You are likely to see many waterfront views with bald eagles or osprey soaring over your head as you ride & walk. Visit Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge just a few miles away and observe many different birds of prey in their natural habitat. Drive into Cambridge to take in the many antique stores, play a round of golf at the new Hyatt Resort and Country Club, or eat dinner at any of the fine restaurants in Cambridge. Better yet, sample some of the famous Maryland crab cakes at one of the local restaurants near Deerpond.

We have a deep water mooring for guests and can provide deep water dock access (6 ft depth) by special arrangement. This is very rare for the Eastern Shore.

Unlike many other properties where you are given a set of keys and a phone number to call, your hosts live on the property in the separate manor house, friendly and available to answer all your questions and give their recommendations for restaurants, things to see and possible places to go during your pleasurable stay at Deerpond.

Bob purchased this cottage in 1997

The waterfront setting with acres of land and a $million backyard.

The waterfront setting changes by the minute as birds come and go, squirrels and rabbits play on the lawns, deer graze on the grasses (and sometimes the plants –which is not a good thing) and boats pass in the distance. It’s like living in a game reserve by the water. Then there is the peaceful quiet at night with almost none of the man-made sounds. You sleep like you never slept before.

Deerpond Photos Say It All

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing 5 days at Deerpond. Amazing sunrises (even if you miss the just-over-the-horizon moment), lovely setting w/ rabbits, deer, fireflies (August) and lots of birds, and well-appointed accommodations w/ all the necessary kitchen gadgets. (You can tell from the VRBO pictures that there's quite a bit of "stuff" in the guest house, but it was well ordered and we just moved pieces as needed to create a little extra space. We weren't inside that much anyway.) We took several day trips, made almost daily stops at Emily's Produce (Rt. 16 - fresh everything, including homemade cheesecake!), and were especially impressed w/ the High Spot (restaurant) in Cambridge. Also enjoyed good soft-shelled crabs at Palm Beach Willie's on Taylor Island and fabulous shaved prime rib sliders at the Brew River Restaurant in Salisbury. There's a basket full of tourist brochures to give you more ideas. Enjoyed a nice visit w/ hosts Bob and Cathy on our last night; otherwise, they were completely non-intrusive. If we lived a bit closer, we'd visit Deerpond every summer.

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5
My best friend and I spent a long weekend at Deerpond. I spent much of my childhood summer on the Eastern Shore but this was her first time. We were blown away by this hidden gem. First a beautiful drive through the Maryland countryside that culminated in the most perfect vacation spot we could have picked. Quiet, peaceful with a gorgeous view yet close enough to all the wonderful things this part of the country has to offer. The apartment was ingeniously laid out and felt really big. Everything you could possibly need was included even a double kayak! And it was very private. The view off the deck made you want to jump out of bed in the morning just to drink your coffee and soak it in. All the lovely areas on the property gave it a park-like feel. We didn't get to use the pool as the long, cold winter delayed its opening but that didn't put a dent in our fun. We wish we had brought our bikes! Our terrific hosts made us feel at home. What a surprise to find treats waiting for us on the stairs and yummy Mint Juleps! They were always available to answer questions yet were completely unobtrusive. Honestly, the pictures don't really do it justice. We were very sad when we had to pack to go home and plan to make Deerpond a regular place to visit. Thank you for sharing your little piece of heaven with us!

Quiet and clean

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at Deerpond after a few days in DC. We were looking for a quiet place to relax and this is exactly what we found. The studio apartment was perfect for a couple. Talk about clean! It was immaculate. The view was awesome--the Chesapeake and the yard! It is nice and quiet and since it is separate from the house it has it's privacy. It has everything it needs and was nicely decorated. We did a little sight seeing--a walk down the road where you see deer rabbits and snapping turtles, a drive to local Cambridge or Taylor's island...we loved exploring the area. Thank you for the stay!

The accomodations are very nice and comfortable. The layout is extremely well thought out. We had everything we needed. The hosts are very nice and accomodating, yet they leave you alone. The property and location are gorgeous. You cannot go wrong with this location.

Relaxing and peaceful

  • 5 of 5
Deerpond was just what my wife and I needed for a nice, quiet, long-weekend waterfront getaway. It is ideal for a couple (& really too small for larger groups). Although it is basically one large space, the owners--Bob & Carol--have laid it out nicely so there are several distinct areas for sleeping (on a very comfy memory foam bed), reading, watching TV, & cooking (if you'd like). We had a beautiful view of the water & the view of the bay down at the end of the dock was splendid. The owners were very nice & responsive to our questions, but otherwise completely unobtrusive--except for the surprise cookies and breakfast loaf they left on our stairs (which were much appreciated). We had an excellent meal one night in Cambridge at Bistro Poplar--a place that could certainly compete with many here in Portland--and the next day enjoyed crab cakes and fish & chips at Old Salty's down on Hooper's Island. We also explored the Blackwater Nature Reserve, which is an absolute must see. All in all, we had a great time. It was just what we were looking for and we're very happy to have found Deerpond. We could easily see ourselves going back the next time we're in the area.

A note about the internet. As the owner explained, out there internet service is only available via 4G broadband service, so there's no cable or DSL with unlimited usage. The 100 MB for $5 a day was perfectly adequate for us to check email & do a bit of web browsing--and who needs to do more in such a lovely spot? But if you absolutely have to be connected all the time or need to stream or Skype, you should probably have your own broadband data plan.

Deerpond

We enjoyed our stay very much. It was so serene and peaceful. We would eat our breakfast on the deck watching the boats and the birds on the water. Bob and Cathy were thoughtful hosts, and Cathy is a grand cook, really enjoyed our Italian treat. Thank you so much!

Owner's Response: The Carriage House deck enjoys the best view of Deerpond because of it's height. I am glad you enjoyed it.
