QUIET WATERFRONT RETREAT IN ESTATE SETTING

Cambridge Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Your hosts invite you to enjoy a visit to the land that James Michener wrote about in his book 'Chesapeake.' And remember to keep this visit a secret '...lest you awaken the rest of the world as to what a sequestered paradise this place is on the Eastern Shore.' (James Michener)

You will be staying in a charming, waterfront, carriage house located on a five-acre estate with surrounding tall pines and stately cedars. Your living quarters, with private entrance and second-floor balcony, will overlook the pool and English garden below. Queen-size bed with down comforter and memory foam mattress, terry robes, overstuffed seating, antique furniture, and rich oak floors all add to a romantic and homelike ambiance. If you become chilled, just flip on the gas fireplace. Enjoy peace and quiet, observe wildlife, watch the sunrise from the beach, and sip a glass of wine on the dock just before sunset.

Take walks or ride your bicycle along the mile long peninsula road that leads to Deerpond and throughout the surrounding area. You are likely to see many waterfront views with bald eagles or osprey soaring over your head as you ride & walk. Visit Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge just a few miles away and observe many different birds of prey in their natural habitat. Drive into Cambridge to take in the many antique stores, play a round of golf at the new Hyatt Resort and Country Club, or eat dinner at the fine restaurants of the Hyatt. Better yet, sample some of the famous Maryland crab cakes at one of the local restaurants near Deerpond.

We have a deep water mooring for guests and can provide deep water dock access (6 ft depth) by special arrangement. This is very rare for the Eastern Shore.

Unlike many other properties where you are given a set of keys and a phone number to call, your hosts live on the property in the separate manor house, friendly and available to answer all your questions and give their recommendations for restaurants, things to see and possible places to go during your pleasurable stay at Deerpond.

Bob purchased this cottage in 1997

The waterfront setting with acres of land and a $million backyard.

The waterfront setting changes by the minute as birds come and go, squirrels and rabbits play on the lawns, deer graze on the grasses (and sometimes the plants –which is not a good thing) and boats pass in the distance. It’s like living in a game reserve by the water. Then there is the peaceful quiet at night with almost none of the man-made sounds. You sleep like you never slept before.

QUIET AND CLEAN

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at Deerpond after a few days in DC. We were looking for a quiet place to relax and this is exactly what we found. The studio apartment was perfect for a couple. Talk about clean! It was immaculate. The view was awesome--the Chesapeake and the yard! It is nice and quiet and since it is separate from the house it has it's privacy. It has everything it needs and was nicely decorated. We did a little sight seeing--a walk down the road where you see deer rabbits and snapping turtles, a drive to local Cambridge or Taylor's island...we loved exploring the area. Thank you for the stay!

The accomodations are very nice and comfortable. The layout is extremely well thought out. We had everything we needed. The hosts are very nice and accomodating, yet they leave you alone. The property and location are gorgeous. You cannot go wrong with this location.

RELAXING AND PEACEFUL

  • 5 of 5
Deerpond was just what my wife and I needed for a nice, quiet, long-weekend waterfront getaway. It is ideal for a couple (& really too small for larger groups). Although it is basically one large space, the owners--Bob & Carol--have laid it out nicely so there are several distinct areas for sleeping (on a very comfy memory foam bed), reading, watching TV, & cooking (if you'd like). We had a beautiful view of the water & the view of the bay down at the end of the dock was splendid. The owners were very nice & responsive to our questions, but otherwise completely unobtrusive--except for the surprise cookies and breakfast loaf they left on our stairs (which were much appreciated). We had an excellent meal one night in Cambridge at Bistro Poplar--a place that could certainly compete with many here in Portland--and the next day enjoyed crab cakes and fish & chips at Old Salty's down on Hooper's Island. We also explored the Blackwater Nature Reserve, which is an absolute must see. All in all, we had a great time. It was just what we were looking for and we're very happy to have found Deerpond. We could easily see ourselves going back the next time we're in the area.

A note about the internet. As the owner explained, out there internet service is only available via 4G broadband service, so there's no cable or DSL with unlimited usage. The 100 MB for $5 a day was perfectly adequate for us to check email & do a bit of web browsing--and who needs to do more in such a lovely spot? But if you absolutely have to be connected all the time or need to stream or Skype, you should probably have your own broadband data plan.

DEERPOND

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed our stay very much. It was so serene and peaceful. We would eat our breakfast on the deck watching the boats and the birds on the water. Bob and Cathy were thoughtful hosts, and Cathy is a grand cook, really enjoyed our Italian treat. Thank you so much!

Owner's Response: The Carriage House deck enjoys the best view of Deerpond because of it's height. I am glad you enjoyed it.

NOT EXACTLY AS ADVERTISED...

  • 2 of 5
There are a number of positive attributes to this property, but the "carriage house" is actually steps away from the main house with little privacy. The photos specifically obscure that the small balcony looks right down on the pool as well as the owner's porch and house. You share the pool with the owners, and during the one afternoon sunny enough to use the pool, the owner promptly turned off the pool heater. If you're looking for a luxurious atmosphere, this is not it...the "antique" furniture is a bunch of mismatched items which are all adequate, just not luxurious. Finally, the owner charges for wireless internet use by the size of the downloads...guests beware.

Owner's Response: After more than 10 years in business this is the first negative review received. The owners strive to provide all guests with a pleasant, comfortable, quiet and private setting. We are sorry that this guest was disappointed and felt a need to express it this way after writing back to us on their day of departure, Aug 19th, to say the following: "Thanks so much for a wonderful stay." Apparently they changed their mind for some reason. Since the review is very misleading, it invites us to comment on each of the reviewer's assertions that were never expressed to us during their stay. The Carriage House balcony has a commanding view of the waterfront side of the property; including a gazebo type covered porch that projects off the end of the manor house. The porch is over 60 ft away and not just a few steps away as the reviewer claims. Privacy is maintained by having no windows on the Carriage house that face the owner's house. The pool is located between the two structures and is not normally heated, especially in August when the heat of the sun warms it nicely. On the particular date and time in question, when temperatures happened to be well below normal, the owners voluntarily turned on the pool heater to bring the temperature of the 15,000 gallon pool up to a comfortable temperature of 84 degrees before turning it off. The reviewer conveniently failed to mention this fact. We will leave the judgment of furnishings to the previous 19 guest reviews and 100 additional reviews recorded in our written guestbook. High speed Internet access is provided by wireless carriers that apply a data usage sensitive pricing model. There are no fixed price offerings available to us that have acceptable performance. We implemented a corresponding usage sensitive pricing model in order to recover our costs and time used. On arrival day, the reviewer requested and received a price quote for 3-days of internet access. After accepting the terms and provided the access code, they notified us the next day that they changed their mind and weren’t going to need it. They proceeded to use 370 MB of data without telling us. After we confirmed the usage via email with the guest, we were asked to have the amount deducted from their security deposit. Due to the misleading assertions made in this review and unknown motives of the reviewer, the owners feel this review should never have been published and have expressed that feeling to VRBO in writing.

RELAXING GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed 4 nights at Deerpond. It is exactly as advertised, right down to the wildlife on the property. The carriage house is just right for 2, a very clean, well-maintained, cozy space with all amenities and all the privacy you could ask for. We enjoyed using the pool, walking the grounds, and sightseeing in St. Michael's. While in St Michael's we dined at the Town Dock Restaurant and found it an enjoyable experience, overlooking the water, with excellent food and service. On our one rainy day, we stayed in, played cribbage, and just relaxed. Finding the local Walmart was easy for anything we needed. If you're looking for a relaxing, quiet getaway, Deerpond is for you!
