Hi, My name is Mary Jane and I live on the water in Bodega Bay. Our property features three private rental units. I live in one, and there is a two bedroom and one bedroom vacation rental as well. I've lived in Bodega Bay for 10 years, and am happy to provide recommendations and resources for your trip to the Sonoma Coast!
The Owner purchased this house in 1999
I love the quiet and serenity of Bodega Bay. While the history of Bodega Bay is rooted in the fishing industry, there is a lot of activity and variety in this small town. You can enjoy dozens of scenic beaches, hiking, biking, wine tasting, fishing, golf, you name it. No wonder Bodega Bay is one of the most popular towns on the coast.
Living right on the water is the most unique aspect of this property. Open the deck and feed the seagulls, or enjoy watching the seals and pelicans right out front of your window. I love watching the changing of the tides, and watching the fishing boats pass 'At the Bay's Edge' on their way to unload their catch.
We very much enjoyed our stay. The place is dripping in history, (creamery in 1890s, prospective bootlegging location in 20s!) Mary Jane and her son in law met us to give us advice and ideas. The place is really right on the water and you have a continuous "show" of fishing boats, birds (Ack! We watched Hitchcock's "The Birds" and tried to scare ourselves), seals, etc., right out the window. We managed to launch kayaks right off the side deck (you have to time the tides,) drove the coast (amazing free beaches great for photography), ate at the harbor, went into Bodega, watched crabbers on Doran beach, etc. It was fun to be there during crab season to see all the activity. The 2 bedroom is plenty roomy enough for my husband and me and our two teenaged daughters. The age of the building gives this a quaint feel with wide stairwell and odd angles to the ceilings. Nice beds, plenty of towels, etc. I would warn anyone staying anywhere in Bodega Bay...you do not have a "real" grocery store nearby, so getting what you want is higher in price and you may not get the "brand" you love. But it would totally destroy the visit if there was a Raleys or Bel Air! I rate this place a 5. It is not the Ritz, but I don't want to stay at the Ritz. I want to stay in a place where I can relax and enjoy.
This place is awesome! Everything you need and then some for rest and relaxation by the Bay's Edge. The owner is a delight. The view of seals playing and fishing vessels gliding in and out of the harbor from your private dock - it just doesn't get better!
We had a wonderful time just before Thanksgiving "At the Bay's Edge". Of course, you can't beat the view, you are right on the water and the immersion into the natural world is truly incredible. You can hear the seagulls and seals, watch the fishing boats pass the house on the way to drop off their catch, and watch the pelicans dive for their dinner.
We stayed in the two bedroom and every detail had been considered. There were binoculars, wildlife guide books, everything about Bodega Bay you can imagine, and a wonderful welcome from the owner, Mary Jane. It was spacious, comfortable, and there were even a lot of board games and videos for our kids!
We ended up cooking in several times, Mary Jane told us where to buy fresh fish and we enjoyed just being right on the water....and the kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed (including crab pots!). We also enjoyed going to Spud Pointe Crab (can you tell we love crab?) as well as Lucas Wharf for dinner. We enjoyed walking on Doran Beach and Goat Rock Beach....and going into the town of Bodega.
Would highly suggest "At the Bay's Edge" -- you can't beat the location and Mary Jane is so nice and helpful, and we had a wonderful time! We'll definitely return!
My husband and I spent 2 nights in the 1 bedroom rental. The views were breath taking and watching the sea lions playing in the morning was a highlight. Mary Jane was a very knowledgable and gracious host. The accommodations were nice and what I would call a rustic representation of the old Bodega bay. It was cozy and well equipped. My 4 stars was only because the bathroom faucet leaks and there were no lids to the pans. Those are minor things and would certainly not keep us from coming back again. If you are looking for a cozy, romantic cottage with views to die for this is your place. We had dinner at "the duck club" which we would HIGHLY recommend. Thank you Mary Jane!
This place definitely needs some sprucing up. Rugs are incredibly dirty. There is an inch of dust on the artificial plants. many cushions in the living room and the seats are dirty. The cushions on the chairs kitchens are stained and they were changed sides several times instead of being cleaned. I cleaned the dishes from the kitchen before use since it was sticky. The kitchen cabinets are sticky. Many ants invading the kitchen counter and walk on food. This place was probably once the gem, a hidden treasure, but it needs to be enhanced. It is a beautiful location and the house is beautiful, but a little abandoned. It's a shame because it is rich in atmosphere and information for travelers. This is the most expensive we paid during our trip to California, but by far the dirtiest place.
We spent the Christmas holiday "At the Bay's Edge" in Bodega Bay along the Sonoma Coast. We enjoyed two days of sightseeing in the area (there's a lot to do and see here!) and two days just relaxing and enjoying the view.
There are a number of fabulous beaches close by....Doran is a long stretch of beach, there are others that are more dramatic and better just for wave watching. We also went wine tasting and enjoyed some of the best clam chowder we've ever tasted. The owner, Mary Jane knows everyone in town, just ask her the best things to do / see based on what your preferences are!
The private apartment was perfect for us. It had panoramic bay views that we enjoyed just sitting in front of....we never turned on the TV. Mary Jane provided binoculars and local wildlife books....so it was great fun to just sit and watch who came by to visit. We cooked fresh crab in the fully equipped kitchen....which has everything you could imagine in it.
I highly recommend "At the Bay's Edge" -- there's so much to see and do here you just can't go wrong with this very special Bodega Bay Vacation Rental. We'll definitely be back!
