About Dave Trachtenberg
As a boy, I remember counting mile markers on heading northbound on Interstate 75. Traveling from the flatlands and cornfields of Ohio, the contrasting landscape of Northern Michigan is what really comes to mind. The fir and birch trees that grew more into forest the further north we drove. I remember the contrasts in temperature and was amazed at how much cooler it became the further north we drove, even in August!
As a young man, I took my first job as a dock porter on Mackinac Island. My chief responsibility was to greet hotel guests at the ferry dock and assist them with their luggage to their hotel or b&b. Guests would generally tip me to ride their luggage on my bike to the hotel. 'Dockporting' was the best job I ever had, I got paid to work out of doors and ride a bike! On my days off, I would catch a ferry ride to the mainland, pickup some McDonalds or anything else that was unavailable on the island and set off for a ride south on M119. Passing through Good Hart, taking a break on the old wooden bench outside the general store, I'd ride further south to historic Legg's Inn in Cross Village and hear the bartender talk about how Bob Seager was just there, and how I had just missed a spontaneous set of his hit songs. From Legg's, I'd race through the canopy of trees with the sunlight flickering on and off over my shoulder, winding down the hill into Harbor Springs. I'm thrilled to now literally have a little corner of the village, and I'm happy to share the space now with you! :)
