If you are looking to 'Get Away' to an UNSPOILED, UNHURRIED, UNBELIEVABLE place; Our cottage on Beaver Island is it. Imagine a place that has been virtually untouched and unspoiled, that is Beaver Island. For a 'Truly' Relaxing nature filled vacation, this is the spot. The Summer, Fall and Winter are Spectacular! CHECK OUT OUR GREAT HUNTING and WINTER PACKAGES!!!
Getting to Beaver Island: The first stop is Charlevoix, MI, a Lake Michigan harbor city located approx 250 miles north of Detroit. You can also fly into Pelston or Traverse City airports and connect to Ferry or Island Airways in Charlevoix. From Charlevoix take a quick 15 minute flight or the 2 hour leisurely ferry ride on the Emerald Isle. Either way, it's an amazing adventure!
When you arrive on the island you will find a place that will take you back in time. Slow, patient, friendly and Beautiful! You might want to stop at the Shamrock for a beverage after the ferry ride or take the scenic 15-20 minute drive straight out to the cottage. Our cottage is located on Wicklow Beach which is on the East Side of the Island South of Sand Bay and North of Martin's Point. Distance is measured by time on the Island, most of the roads have not been paved...it's just another way to make you slow down!
When you reach Summertime, the drive in is through a wooded pathway into a vast open area with scattered trees along the perimeter. We have a garage that you will see when pulling in, which is light gray and white and then to the cottage. The cottage has a charming decor with an open kitchen family room layout which includes floor to ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan. There are 3 bedrooms each with a queen or full size bed and a full size bath so it's perfect for a family of 4-6. A lovely deck, and a hammock overlooking the lake are just a few of the amenities that adorn the cottage. We do have neighbors so the cottage might not feel completely secluded when you first drive up...But I guarantee that when you step into the cottage you won't ever know it!
Our cottage is available year round, and to be honest fall and winter are possibly better than summer! All the amenities of home are included, you will find it has everything to offer, just bring your clothes and food. We even supply some of that, like coffee, some spices and even a few things in the pantry. The adventure of getting to Beaver Island and Summertime simply set the stage for the perfect 'Get Away'!
While at Summertime you might read your novel on the hammock overlooking lake Michigan, walk the miles of sandy beach, take a swim in the clear lake water, explore the island and it's over 100 miles of roads and trails, kayak, fish on one of the 5 inland lakes, roast marshmallows in the fire pit on the beach, admire the vast array of stars, discover some of the other islands in the Archipelego, visit the spa for a massage, play nine at the Beaver golf course, lounge on the deck, take the boat or kayak out, cocktails at Nina's or Donnegal Bay to enjoy the sunset, visit the CMU Biological center, or the 2 lighthouses on the island, Little Sand Bay, Iron Ore Bay or simply do Nothing!
For the ultimate 'Get away' Experience Summertime on Beaver Island; not just in the Summer and Fall which is fabulous, but Winter it's Spectacular!

I first experienced Beaver Island as a kid sailing on my dad's sail boat from Chicago to the port's in Michigan. We went to Beaver Island every summer for years on his boat. My husband and I are from the St. Louis area in MIssouri, but we were transferred to the Detroit area in 1994 and started our trips to Beaver Island in 1997, renting in all areas one week then 2 weeks then 3 weeks then cottage! We fell in love with the East side with the endless beach walks sun rise and the Moon!!!!
Kelly Haenni purchased this cottage in 2004
Beaver Island is a special place, my husband and I are both in the Incentive Travel business and have travelled all over the world but Beaver Island has our spirti and our soul. We have made this cottage ours by adding the screened in porch and Lots of TLC through the years !!!
The view from this cottage and the feeling you have once you walk in was price less and immediately I knew This is it! The hammock view and the darling layout of the cottage were a dream come true for us!
We stayed here in August 2014. Had a great time. Beach is fantastic. Views are awesome. Home is comfortable, private. The owners are extremely helpful and flexible.
We loved the island and will be returning for longer next time. We hiked most of the trails and public beaches. The views were amazing and the weather/colors were breathtaking! Location was perfect. We felt right at home!
Summertime is the essence of "living easy." It is perfectly situated on the hillside for expansive views of the lake at day or moonlight, and for viewing the brilliant stars at night. The progressive levels of stairs to the lake allow for easy and safe access to the sandy beach below for both children and adults. Because our vacation dates coincided with the Supermoon and Perseid meteor shower, we had the glorious experience of watching both celestial events from this darkened stretch of earth! The sunrises were equally stunning.
The house is really perfect in every way for privacy, lake access, sleeping, and just relaxation. The hammock and deck were well used - as were the fire pit, lawn chairs and kayak. We read, we watched Planet Earth DVDs, we played games and laughed, we cooked and ate leisurely dinners, and we slept (as others have stated) to the sounds of the waves breaking shore. We walked, waded, swam, and watched water fowl and snakes, which we especially enjoyed after reading the narratives of a local resident’s snake stories.
The tennis courts in town were terrific (the backboard is solid and straight!), and the library was wonderful. It was (in every regard) a lovely, reinvigorating vacation, and can't imagine anyone not cherishing their time in this heavenly haven! Thank you, Kelly and Chris, for sharing your house and love for Beaver Island!
My family and I (6 adults + a toddler) just arrived home from a week on Beaver Island @ Summertime. This was our first time on the Island and I have to say it exceeded our every expectation.
The first thing all of us noticed after getting off of the ferry was how friendly everyone on the island was. We got a wave or a smile from every single person we passed, it was wonderful!
The cottage is about a 10-15 minute drive from the ferry dock downtown; which was perfect for us. We arrived at the cottage and the first thing we all noticed was the absolutely spectacular view of Lake Michigan from the main living room windows.
There is a beautiful deck off the back of the house (overlooking the lake) that was a very pleasant surprise as well, it's Trex, I believe, and it is large! There is an outdoor eating table, a newer gas grill as well as a charcoal grill that we used almost every night (and loved)! We spent a ton of nights out there (and at the bonfire pit) jabbering away, watching the moon rise up over the lake.
Like other reviews before mine, the beach is really nice as well. We took some very long walks, barefoot and never ran across areas that were difficult to walk on. The water is shallow for a long way out, and on sunny days, it almost seemed like looking out on the Caribbean.
One of the neighbors chatted with us a bit while they walked by on the beach and told us to check out the 2nd largest Birch tree in Michigan (which we had no idea was on the island). It was kind of a fun little side adventure we took ;).
Anyway, we had a wonderful wonderful time on Beaver Island and will definitely rent this cottage out again. It was perfect!
We just arrived home from a weeks stay in the Sumer Time Cottage and can't wait to return again next year. Everything about our week on Beaver Island was magical!
The cabin was beautiful, very comfortable and exactly what we expected from the photos. We spent most of our time on the amazing deck overlooking Lake Michigan or playing on sandy beach below. We have stayed on the island before and knew location wise that we wanted a small drive from town but, not too far. The location of the cabin was perfect for us. We were about 15 minutes from town and 15 minutes from Iron Ore Beach (our favorite place to enjoy an evening sunset).
We also enjoyed the kayak, the great beach chairs and .....as cheesy as it sounds, long walks on the beach:) You can walk for what seems like miles along the beach in front of the cabin......something that is a bit rare on the island. Many beaches there seem to be rocky or mucky and this beach was beautiful.
We are grateful that the owners are willing to share their beautiful home and look forward to a return visit.
My wife and I (along with our 75 lb. goldendoodle) really enjoyed our stay at the Summertime Cottage. The cottage has an incredible view of Lake Michigan that you can enjoy from right on the beach, the deck or inside in the living room that overlooks the water. The cottage was clean, comfortable and we found the amenities to be just what we needed, e.g., kitchen supplies, outdoor grill, deck chairs, kayak, movies, games, etc. While kayaking, we discovered that Lake Michigan is much clearer than we ever good have imagined! Our goldendoodle had the time of his life chasing tennis balls into the water and running up and down the semi-private beach. On a couple of the cooler nights, we made use of the fireplace inside and the fire pit down on the beach.
McDonough's Market in town had fresh beef, steaks, vegetables, etc. for grilling and a solid assortment of Michigan micro-brews to try. We also enjoyed a couple of meals at The Shamrock with a view of Paradise Bay and at Donegal Danny's Pub just outside of the town, both that offer good food, draft beer and a lot of locals. For pricier fare, but with a great view reminiscent of Northern California, try the Beaver Island Lodge. On our last night, we took a drive out to the Southern side of the island for a tour of the old lighthouse that has a long spiral staircase and nice view at the top.
We'd highly recommend the Summertime Cottage and Beaver Island for those looking to kick back, relax and escape the daily grind of emails, phone calls and work!
Some shopping, Grocery store, Cappucino is even available at the Dalwhinnie, Restaurants, Bars, Maritmie and Mormon Museum's, EXPLORING, beaches, trails, History of the Island.
