Overview

Keaukaha House Rental Photos and Description

Classic 3 bedroom, 2 bath kama'aina home with grace and elegance

This classic 1937 house directly across from a black sand snorkeling beach has been home to sugar company executives and kamaaina families who treasured Hilo. From the privacy of the house site, the entryway with its koa bench, to the ohia wood floors in the main living area to the lush yard, this house was made for a gracious island lifestyle.

The wide great room with its ocean view has the main dining area and living room and 20 foot ceilings with koa fans. It is perfect for sitting by the window with a book and looking through the Hilo greenery to the water or for a leisurely dinner after a day of sightseeing. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas stove, toaster and microwave ovens, espresso and coffee makers, rice cooker, and more. The side bar is stocked with wine glasses including acrylic glasses for relaxing in the yard on the lounge chairs or at the outdoor table. The breakfast area is tucked along the screened back porch, which is an oasis in the summertime.

Each of the three bedrooms has its own character and each has an attached bath. The front bedroom, the blue room, has the ocean view and classic built-ins and high ceilings. The front bath shower looks down the driveway at the ocean. The master bedroom is in the back of the house and the windows frame the back yard's greenery and the original lava rock seating bench. It also has high ceilings and is very relaxing. The master bath has much of its original 1930's design. The third bedroom, in the ohana unit, is opened when more than three guests, or more than two couples, book. The ohana has a living room area with a Hawaiian-style punee, a kitchenette with koa cabinetry, and table, a loft bedroom, and bath. All of the bedrooms have ceiling fans. The beds are new and have memory foam toppers. The linens are all cotton and when possible, organic.

As the sun slowly lights your bedroom and the birds chirp outside, your day in this classic 1937 kama'aina home begins. As you stroll over to the kitchen, you already have a choice to make - breakfast in the enclosed lanai or outside in the lush backyard? Its a difficult choice as each one is beautiful.

Over breakfast, you begin to plan your day. Will it be a day on the beach parks across the street, or a visit to the Volcanoes National Park or ziplines over the rain forest? Its not an easy choice as there are a myriad of options within reach. Whichever you choose, a quick stop at a local farmer's market or roadside stand to pick up some freshly harvested fruits and vegetables sounds like a great idea. Of course, just staying at the house and relaxing with a good book on the secluded grounds is always an option too!

When you return home from your day of adventures (even if those adventures took place in the front yard), the open and well-appointed kitchen is inviting you to explore your culinary options. The Big Island offers a wide selection of foods grown, harvested, caught and picked right here. Even the most basic cook will find something simple, elegant and beautiful to prepare. The small sidebar between the kitchen and dining area is the perfect spot to chill some wine or prepare a cocktail to accompany your meal.

After dinner, the living area offers a couple of different seating areas conducive to talk, TV and relaxation. Of course, because the Big Island is a center of astronomy, a little star gazing from the front yard is a great choice too. Listen to the ocean waves from across the street. Sea and stars are a combination that cannot be beat!

As the evening winds down, the comfy, and plush bedrooms await. Crawl under the luxurious bedding and lay your head on the soft pillows. Feel your entire body sink in and prepare for a night of sleep and rejuvenation. What will you dream of tonight? A recap of the day past? Tomorrow's adventures? Whatever it may be, enjoy.
