The epitome and true essence of Portsmouth and all it represents awaits your arrival at our beautifully renovated seacoast home conveniently nestled in Portsmouth’s Historic South End.

The original 12’ x 33’ section was a “Fish House” in Strawbery Bank in the 18th century, and was moved to its current location in 1820. We carefully doubled the size of the house while maintaining the character and integrity of the original building. All of the door hardware, nails in the floor boards, coat racks, fireplace tools, goose necks and hand rails were made by a local blacksmith. The wide pine, hand-hewn boards that dress out the living room belonged to our builder’s great, great Grandfather. The reclaimed bricks in our traditional Rumford fireplace are from a local mill building that was razed years ago. All of the windows are new and wood. You’ll need to strike a match to light the burners on our original 1927 Glenwood stove… yes it’s real and we've used it to serve thousands of meals to guests over the years. Between the skylights and windows, every room is filled with sunshine and bright light even on a cloudy day. The floors are soft pine. The kitchen cabinets, cherry bar, shaker style table and chairs are all handmade giving the house a very warm and cozy feeling reminiscent of days gone by. The master bedroom furnishings are hand made of cherry from the earlier Pompanoosuc Mills collection and the second bedroom is from the LLBean Cottage Collection. Pillows and bed linens are new. There is a full size upstairs laundry room with soap which you are welcome to use. The upstairs bathroom boasts a fantastic walk in shower with Barber Wilson fixtures and excellent water pressure and also a claw foot tub for bubble baths with epsom salts to relax in after a stressful day! The driveway accommodates two cars and there is additional free parking on the adjoining main street. We have never had the need for air-conditioning between the usual onshore breezes and house fans so please know we do not have A/C.

Our tiny back yard is a real treat with a beautiful lawn and flower gardens. You are invited to help us water and tend to the gardens as needed and also enjoy the vegetables and herbs from the two raised-beds and herb path along the west side of the house. The gas grill is plumbed inline so propane tanks are not necessary. Hop onto the bikes and ride across the brand new Memorial Bridge into Kittery, ME., ride out to New Castle, or pack a lunch and ride out to the beaches of Rye and Wallis Sands. The road to New Castle, the Newcastle Beach Commons and the Wentworth Hotel are legendary... hundreds of people walk, run, bike and drive the route every day with cameras in tow to capture the memories. The downtown working waterfront of Historic Portsmouth with it's tug boats, ships, water views, restaurants, shops, etc., is nothing short of spectacular even in the off season. This is an ideal spot for kayaking, canoeing, sailing, motor boating and fishing.

This is our personal home of twenty-five years which is pretty much fully stocked, very clean and without a lot of clutter. In the pantries, cupboards and drawers you'll find everything you'll need to cook and dine with including cookbooks, just look for what you need. Help yourself to anything, replace it in kind as you see necessary and make our house your own.

The house is a sixty second walk to the water where you will find Sander’s Lobster Pound. Sanders will boil lobsters for you to take back to the house and enjoy. It’s a four minute walk to the Fish Market and the boutique wine & cheese shop next door! If you don’t feel like cooking or eating in, stroll on into charming downtown Portsmouth or Kittery where there are ninety plus restaurants, pubs, bars, bakeries, coffee shops, galleries, and boutique gift shops. You will also find indoor and outdoor concerts, theaters, museums, harbor tours and special events held in the beautiful, flower-lined waterfront parks. With the exception of a few day trips to other really special places and 'must do's' in the area if time permits, you can leave your car in our driveway for a week and walk or bike to everything.

While this listing is new to VRBO and new to the online community, the property has been successfully rented many times over the years but it has only been offered via word of mouth and referral until now. Since we've had great experiences using VRBO to find vacation spots to rent, we thought we'd use VRBO to share our unique home with you. Based on our guests past experiences, we think you will be very pleasantly surprised and never regret your decision to stay with us!

While our daily rate is $550, we encourage you to take advantage of our discounted weekly Rate of $2,850. Also we are happy to accommodate mid-week changeovers (instead of Saturday to Saturday) so you can enjoy Portsmouth on weekends.

NOTES: PLEASE no shoes, no pets, no smoking and no roller suitcases rolling around. While this is and has always been a really excellent place for large family get-together's (which we really encourage you to do), it's is definitely NOT a place for loud noise, music and late night parties given our close proximity to our fantastic neighbors who we have a tremendous amount of respect for. Please allow no more than six persons, including children, for overnight accommodations... Two is perfect, four is excellent, five is good, six works but the couch is open to the entire first floor and is not private.

wonderful home, location and owners

at pretty short notice we got in touch with Rob and Joyce about their property and they were back in touch with us super quick. We stayed for four nights and really enjoyed their lovely home. They were very thoughtful in leaving us some basics for our stay; milk, coffee, beer, etc

The house was just as described; clean, had great amenities, beautiful garden and was in an excellent location close to downtown.

We'll be back again.

This exceptionally cared for home is a gem! Moments from resturants, sightseeing and even the farmers market. The owners care and thoughtfulness was evident in everything from the fresh garden vegetables and groceries in the fridge to the samples in the bathroom.
