About Brian Boyle

Brian and Deborah split their time between Chicago and Traverse City. We and our seven children enjoy the property when we can. We particularly enjoy driving the roads in Northern Michigan, cycling, kayaking and cross country skiing. The first night we arrived at the property after buying it we turned off our car headlights and the most spectacular view of the night sky burst out above us. We hope you enjoy returning to this house after a day of vacationing in Northern Michigan and get to feel the beauty of the night sky, the cool breezes over the peninsula and quiet of a country retreat at our vineyard home.

Brian Boyle purchased this house in 2004

What makes this house unique

The vineyard, the privacy, the quiet, its accessibility to town, and the comfortable weather combined to make this the ideal getaway property.

Our home is located on the ridge that forms the spine of the Old Mission Peninsula. The house sits on a seven acre property. Our one acre vineyard less than fifty yards from the front door. Enjoy the view of our wooded acres at the south of our property, our wooded ravine to the east of our property, or the vineyard on the west side. The house is on a long private drive and the brilliant night sky makes for spectacular star gazing on the many clear nights Northern Michigan enjoys. Turn off the house lights and put out a few chairs to see the Milky Way, shooting stars and the constellations as you seldom get to see them in the modern world! Our location on the ridge of Old Mission provides gentle cooling breezes, but two bedrooms and the dining room are equipped with ceiling fans, just in case.

The house is minutes from several wineries and five miles from Traverse City, with its festivals, shopping, and dining.

The Old Mission peninsula is famous not only for its temperate climate and its wineries, but also for its gorgeous scenic roads. At the northernmost point of the peninsula sits Lighthouse Park, at precisely the 45th parallel, halfway between the North Pole and the Equator. It has sandy, quiet beaches, forested hiking trails, and of course the lighthouse, open for touring.

In town, the Dennos Museum has an extensive collection of Inuit art and features regularly changing visiting exhibits. Interlochen's world famous music program and theater is about 45 minutes away. Traverse City has festivals of all sorts throughout the year. In the summer, enjoy the Cherry Festival; the Film Fest; food, wine, and local beer festivals; and numerous music and theater events.

The roads of Old Mission are suitable for bicycling and in town the TART bicycle / running / and blading trail provides a safe, paved greenbelt trail for these activities all the way to Suttons Bay.

Beaches for family fun are a few miles away, at the base of the peninsula, the Lighthouse Park, or next to the town of Old Mission, about six miles to the North. Several other beaches ring the south end of the bay, in Traverse City.

Northern Michigan is famous for its fly fishing. Several of the best rivers for fly fishing are nearby. Guides, equipment and advice are available from two excellent fly shops in town.

About 20 minutes away is the Vasa Trail. In winter, the trail provides a groomed trail for both skate and classic Nordic skiing. In summer, the trail is open for hiking and mountain biking. The terrain varies between mildly hilly to challenging, depending on which trail you choose!

Kayak rentals and other sports rentals are available in town. There is never a shortage of things to do in Northern Michigan. At the end of the day, return to the quiet of the house and enjoy a glass of wine and the view of the sun setting over the vineyard.
