Special interest holidays:
Triora is famous for being the home of witchcraft. In the 15th century some 30 witches were arrested, convicted of causing a local famine and burnt. There is a museum dedicated to the subject in the village. The village and surrounding area is extremely picturesque and is a haven for artists. There are several mountain walks in all directions, where you will find rare birds and fauna and mushrooms. (In September there is an annual Mushroom Festival.) It has several churches, all full of historically interesting paintings and other items. There are also many neighbouring villages with histories of their own to explore.
Getting there:
There are two airports, the nearest Nice, about 1hr 30mins drive and Genoa about a 2hr drive away. Both airports are serviced by the budget airlines Easyjet and Ryanair. There is a regular train service from both Nice and Genoa to Arma di Taggia and a frequent bus service from Arma di Taggia to Triora. However, to explore and get the best from the area it is recommended that a car is required.
The house is in the centre of the village of Triora which is pedestrian as the medieval streets are too narrow for cars. Parking is free just outside the village and it is possible to unload things in a nearby market square.
Triora:
There are two bars in Triora one trattoria providing excellent Italian and local cuisine. For eating out there is also an excellent hotel restaurant, which throughout the year hosts many special events. In addition there are several good restaurants within easy driving distance. The village also has a grocery store, fruit and vegetable shop, a bakery, baking its famous Triora bread, hairdressers, hardware and electrical shop, an excellent delicatessen and various gift shops. In the next village down the Argentine valley, Molini di Triora there is a pharmacy, cash point and several other shops. In the surrounding towns and villages you will find daily markets and various festivals throughout the summer.
Ski:
There two ski resorts about 1hr 30mins drive by car.
Limone Piemonte which combines three different ski areas and although offering skiing for all levels, is a paradise for intermediates. Monesi, a smaller resort offering challenging skiing just over the mountains behind Triora.
Golf:
There are two golf courses within easy reach. Circolo Golf degli Ulivi at San Remo approx 45 min drive.
Garlenda Golf Club. Between Alassio & Albenga approx 1hr 30min drive.
