Overview

Avery County Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms 1.5 Baths, Sleeps 4

Come relax in this wonderful cabin located in Newland, the heart of the Blue Ridge at 3700-feet altitude. Our Mountain Laurel Hideaway offers seclusion and privacy, yet is just minutes to shopping, sightseeing, and the Mountain Glen Golf Course.

The hideaway has a ground-level entrance, so guests who are not comfortable on stairs will have no problem. The master bedroom, bath, kitchen, and living areas are all on the main floor. Huge windows bring the outdoors into the living area, and the large deck is just perfect for relaxing or entertaining amid the canopy of rhododendrons.

The interior of the cabin has been totally remodeled and furnished with treasures from our family history and finds from local antique stores. For those chilly nights, there is a gas log heater that will warm your family up in a hurry. The kitchen cupboards are stocked and equipped with everything you will need to cook your gourmet meals, just bring the food.

The master suite has king-sized bed and a walk-in closet with washer and dryer. Upstairs, (stairs are a bit steep) there is a large bedroom with two twin beds, a walk-in closet, and a half bath. The sofa and futon in the living room also double as beds and there is a rollaway available too. We like our furry friends, so your small pets are welcomed (with a pet fee) as long as they are well behaved. We ask that you have a pet kennel of some kind to keep your pet in when you are out sightseeing. We also must insist that if you smoke, please do so outside. The entry road to our street is county maintained and has a few pot-holes... However, our street and drive way are in really good condition...while an all wheel drive vehicle is recommended it is not required if the season is not icy.

Come, be our guest in the beautiful Mountain Laurel Hideaway, and enjoy all of nature's magnificent beauty in the North Carolina High Country. Enjoy the area with scenic drives, sightseeing, ziplining, gem mining, caverns, white water rafting on the Toe River, Tubing and our favorite Antiquing. We are in most cases 30 minutes from everything!

About Tim and Sandi McCormack

We are Tim and Sandi McCormack and we live in Central Florida. Tim is a Director of Outreach for our church and Sandi runs a landscaping nursery. We both are potters in our spare time. We have a 17 year old son named Garrett.

Tim and Sandi McCormack purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Tim and Sandi McCormack chose Avery County

Tim's family has had a home in Newland, NC since he was a teenager, so when we considered getting our own cabin there was no other location we would want. We love the fact that Newland is in the middle of every where we like to visit.

When we started looking for a cabin, I looked thru a real estate magazine, and fell in love with this cabin just from the picture of the outside. Its so cute and cozy looking.

When we saw it in person, it was very 70's dated, but with a bit of paint, new flooring and some updates, it turned into the vision of just where we wanted to spend our free time.

Our second trip to Mountain Laurel Hideaway in order to find our own cabin.

  • 4 of 5
We have stayed here twice. I loved staying here, there are a lot of extras that make staying here wonderful. The kitchen has a take one leave one basket of goodies...the cupboards have many of the essentials (salt, pepper, oil etc) that many cabins don't have. The welcome book has all sorts of information about local restaurants etc. We found the house cosy and the deck very nice to sit and relax upon. Many mornings I would go outside with my coffee and just sit and listen to the birds. The drive up to the house is very gentle so its easy access. I think the photos don't accurately capture the comfortable Americana decor. Having a full washer and dryer available was great too so that we could pack fewer clothes. Also there are many DVD's under the TV and books in the foyer near the laundry room. There are even extra jackets hanging there in case you didnt bring enough layers! They have though of everything!

Beautiful, well kept home

  • 5 of 5
My families 2nd visit to your cabin was so relaxing. My husband and I love having our morning coffee on the large, private deck in our PJ's Then sipping wine in the evening & being so close to the humming birds feeding only 5 feet from us. Our kids enjoyed their privacy upstairs with their I pads, I phones and tablets. Internet was as good as we get in the city. The cabin was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything except my groceries. Thank you for your recommendations of places to visit around the area. It has been 5 yr. since we stayed here, I'm glad we were able to rent it again, and hopefully it won't be another 5 yr. before we get back. We enjoyed your home and area a lot. Thank you again......

Beautiful and peacefull.

  • 4 of 5
My family and I visited during Fourth of July week for quick get away. The best part of the cabin was being able to relax on the deck while sipping on you morning coffee or just grilling out on the bbq on a cool summer evening. The cabin is surrounded by trees and no neighbors right next to you. The grocery store was close by and there was plenty of restaruants in town or in a town near you. There was plenty of activities to enjoy and there is even a book with flyers from local things to do. Past guest add to the book and leave there remarks about them. So if you come to relax or want to go out on an adventure, this cabin wont let you down.

Wonderful Anniversary Getaway

  • 5 of 5
I just want to thank you for such a wonderful stay! We came for our Anniversary but didn't want to leave the kids so we decided to stay away from hotels. Boy, are we glad we did! I was so impressed with how spacious and warm everything was. After daily hikes and sightseeing, a home cooked meal is just what everyone wanted and we were able to do because of the kitchen. Everything I needed and the space that allowed everyone to be in there with me was wonderful. With 4 kids, there was plenty of space for sleeping. The rooms were so inviting and comfy. At night, my husband and I would sit out on the back porch and pretend this was where we were forever. We loved the privacy it gave us... and waking up to that and being able to be in our robes having coffee was even more breathtaking.

Well done, on every aspect of this place. We are thinking this would be the perfect Anniversary spot for us every year!!

Be warned

  • 1 of 5
This property is in need of a carpet replacement/cleaning; a strong odor of mildew/mold was apparent upon entry. The property was visited by cleaning personnel only hours before our arrival. Not sure why we were charged a cleaning fee, since we had to dispose of our trash at the county garbage/recycling center; launder our bed linens and towels; clean refrigerator. The rental agreement provided by the owners contained the above cleanup duties plus seven additional check-off list duties; failure to comply with check-off list duties will incur an additional greater than the cleaning fee already paid. The rental agreement provided by the owners was not available until after we committed to the rental, so I view non-disclosed rental agreement as a deceptive practice. This rental agreement should be disclosed to the potential renter on the VRBO property listing page. The road to this property is very bad condition and would require a pick-up truck to reach the property in good weather. I suggest a four wheel drive with very high ground clearance as we had; any other vehicle would have extreme difficulty reaching this property during the summer rain storms that occurred frequently during our stay. Light switches/fan remote control did not operate the ceiling fans. High-speed internet provided instead of satellite/cable as listed the rental advertisement is worthless; the speed reminded of the internet days via dial-up modem. I was unable to send a 10 word email via this “high-speed internet”; as a retired computer professional my inability to communicate via e-mail is not hampered by lack of know-how. The stairs on this are not as advertised; the stairs from the deck leading to the lower level are in disrepair and unusable; the stairs to the loft are steep and are not elder friendly. We used VRBO several times to select a vacation rental; all properties prior to one were of exceptional quality with no undisclosed rental agreements; but this one was deplorable and deceptive. I do recommend this property.

Owner's Response: We were very surprised to read such a harsh review of our home, the 1st negative review in 8 years of renting. If you were so disgruntled about your stay we would think that you would have called us and we would have helped you make other arrangements with a refund. We have since contacted the renters previous to and just after your stay and neither of them found your problems to be valid to their experience. So we would like to address some of your complaints using this public venue since we weren’t given a chance by calling us or by you answering our calls.
My husband Tim is a licensed contractor and mold inspector in the state of Florida, I can assure that there is no mold in our cabin. Carpet was spot cleaned 3 weeks prior to your visit and is to be prof. cleaned after each rental season. Our caretaker does an excellent job of cleaning and sanitizing.
Yes, the basic rental agreement is provided by VRBO and agreed upon at rental, however I do then send you an info packet with codes, address information and recommendations to my paid guests, info not needed for regular inquiries. In your emails, you acknowledged receipt of this on July 8, (4 days before your rental ) and you had no objection.
Secondary roads are county maintained and with all the heavy rain that NC has had this year the county is behind in repairing. Our 50 foot driveway is in great condition. The mountains have rustic, country charm its what brings big city people to the mtns to relax and get away from it all. The internet is new this summer with the only carrier allowed and we found the internet faster and easier to use than ours at home in Florida.
Regarding the staircases, the one outside (only 2 years old) is referred to in our agreement as being a personal staircase not included in the rental as it leads only to our personal storage. As far as the staircase inside going to the upstairs, when more than 2 people rent our home we tell them that the staircase is steep; I didn’t warn you as it was just you and your wife. Homes built in the 70’s in the mtns built steep stairs to save more room for the main floor.
Again, we are distressed that you felt you would need to resort to this method of expressing your dissatisfaction with our property considering our communication prior to was easy with multiple friendly emails. All we want is to share our home so that people can enjoy the mountains we have come to love in a cabin that we are proud.

Cabin is very nice & well-equipped. Had some trouble getting the gas logs to light in fireplace. Owner very helpful & sent her cousin to come over & help. Should be noted that there is no cell phone service in the local area for AT&T. Overall a good experience.
