Sumner Studio Rental Photos and Description
A Studio, Retreat, & Guest House Focusing on the Arts and Better Living.
BASICS: EUREKA is an alternative-style guest house. We bring together the arts, nature, and off-the-beaten-path experiences. We have clean, comfortable guest rooms, a large dance studio, kitchen and laundry facilities, nature trails, and other amenities like an outdoor shower. The retreat is located in a peaceful, authentic rural Maine town a comfortable distance from the touristy areas. The retreat was created and is managed by world renown juggler and touring artist Michael Menes.
GUESTROOMS: We have 2 guest rooms available when we are not using them for artist residencies. Each one has its own 'listing'. The price listed is per room. If you are interested in renting both rooms, you will need to reserve them under 2 reservations. We provide guests with clean sheets and clean towels. The building and neighborhood is very safe and secure. We supply fresh drinking water from a nearby natural Maine spring. Our kitchen and laundry facilities are available. We offer a simple breakfast free. Beer, juices, and sodas can be purchased. (It's self-serve. Just leave the cash. That’s how we do it in Maine.) We'll lend you a robe to use in our outdoor shower if you visit during summer (highly recommended!).
APPLICATIONS: Ideal for theater, dance, circus arts, music, painting, writing, yoga, photography, and other artistic work. We can accommodate small groups or individuals wanting to retreat from the outside world. Our venue is a great place to focus on creative work, rest and relax, or to use as a home base for exploring Maine.
FEATURES: The privately owned building has a wonderful large rehearsal studio with high ceilings, great acoustics, and a sprung dance floor. There are guest rooms with full living accommodations. Guests have access to kitchen facilities, laundry, barbecue, outdoor shower, wifi, and nature trails.
INTERACTION: We enjoy rubbing elbows with our guests. Our friends and family are comprised of people involved in the arts with a lot of experiences in world travel.
NEIGHBORHOOD: We are surrounded by farms, forests, beautiful lakes and lots of fresh air away from the touristy areas, yet not too far from some of the most picturesque destinations in Maine. We are part of a vibrant creative community and a base for exploring off-the-beaten-path adventures. Depending on the season, there are many interesting, down-to-earth, inspiring things to see and do in the area. We recommend the less explored authentic treasures that are often hidden from the typical tourist attractions. Some of these include nearby Celebration Barn Theater, Jack's Greenhouse, Nezinscot Farm, Cooper Spring and Historic Paris Hill.
GETTING AROUND: There is no public transportation in our town. You will need a car to get around. We are approximately 1 hour from Portland International Jetport (PWM).
WHEN TO COME
Although Maine is known for it’s glorious summers, there are other times of the year which are also quite enjoyable, marked here by an (*). Here is a run down of the year.
JULY and AUGUST* are the “high season.” JULY tends to be wetter and more humid with more bugs. AUGUST tends to be the most comfortable month in Maine with some of the “best” weather in the United States. Dryer conditions result in fewer pesky insects. Temperatures are rarely uncomfortable with night time temperatures perfect for camping.
SEPTEMBER* is cooler but still extremely pleasant with much fewer tourists.
Early OCTOBER* is usually peak season for enjoying the autumn colors gradually giving way to a wet, dark, and dreary NOVEMBER with much longer nights and shorter days.
In DECEMBER it begins to snow which is pleasant to feel a sense of the CHRISTMAS SEASON*. By late DECEMBER the weather becomes treacherous at times and unpredictable. The shortest day of the year is the first day of winter in late DECEMBER.
JANAURY and FEBRUARY are “deep winter.” Stretches of sub-zero temperatures can be brutal at times often with difficult winter storms and severe icing.
MARCH* is a month considered “spring ski season.” It has milder temperatures with beautiful sticky snowfalls.
APRIL is “mud season.” By the middle of APRIL most of the snow has melted. Late APRIL into MAY is a long colorless spring.
JUNE* is quite nice with an explosion of new green from the long winter with song birds arriving in droves. There are stretches of rainy days which can be mixed with stretches of dryer nicer weather. The longest day of the year is the first day of summer in late JUNE.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE: Our pricing is per room and we currently have 2 guest rooms available when not being used for artist residencies.

About Michael Menes
I'm a juggler and variety artist who tours nationally and internationally. I was initially drawn to Maine through my experiences taking workshops at the nearby Celebration Barn with a famous teacher named Tony Montanaro. Between tours I built an ideal space for creative work. I continue to improve and expand what it has to offer to travelers, artists, romantics, and adventurers. My partner, Andrea, is vegan and vegetarian chef. Andrea is originally from Prague in the Czech Republic. She often helps out when I have guests staying at my retreat.
Michael Menes purchased this studio in 2002
Why Michael Menes chose Sumner
I grew up in the New York City area but I settled in Oxford County, Maine in 1993 looking for less expensive real estate. After renovating a small home, I bought a nice piece of land, designed, and built a quality studio for rehearsals and projects. The location is very quite and relaxing and offers unspoiled views of rich forests and streams. There's an amazing amount of wildlife and vivid seasons that are a great inspiration to me. Living in New England is like living in several places. The summers are ideal and not too hot; autumns are crisp with beautiful leaves; and winters are dramatic with plentiful snows.
What makes this studio unique
An amazing rehearsal studio set in a peaceful rural setting with vivid seasons and wonderful nature.
