Le Mascaret is a renovated 400 year old Farmhouse and Cottage that sit on 3 acres of land surrounded by vineyards on the bank of the Dordogne River. The properties are private from each other and can be rented together or separately.

There is a large garden and a wooded area next to the river. There are many fruit trees including figs, plums, apples, and pears. Our pool is 52 square meters and has a shallow area for children. The property is perfect for a relaxing quiet holiday and for touring the great wineries of Bordeaux.

Activities: Fishing, golf, horse riding, tennis, and excellent restaurants are all nearby.

There are wonderful weekly markets in the nearby towns where you can purchase locally grown and produced vegetables, cheeses, meats, and seafood. The best markets are: Libourne (15-20 minutes drive), has a market on Tuesday, Fridays, and Sundays with the Sunday one being the largest and best. Bourg (20 minutes drive) on Sundays. Blaye (45 minutes drive) on Wednesdays (After the market, you can take the ferry across the river to the Medoc region and visit some top wineries in the Medoc). St. Andre de Cubzac (8-10 minutes drive) on Thursdays (smaller but lots of seafood) and Saturdays (larger market).

Things to do: Our location offers holiday activities for everyone.

The charming town of St. Emilion and its great wineries are just 25 minutes away. But you must also consider the wines of Fronsac—an up and coming wine appellation and just under 10 minutes away.

Visit Bordeaux—just 20-25 minutes away and offers all the amenities of a major city that resembles a smaller version of Paris with many interesting sights, shopping, and some great restaurants.

You can visit some of the nearby Chateau. The Chateau de Vayres near Libourne is very nice and so is the Chateau Malrome in Saint Andre du Bois (Entre Deux Mers). The Chateau de La Riviere and its wonderful wine caves is about 10 minutes away.

If you are interested in religious history, visit the Abbaye de la Sauve Majeure in Entre Deux Mers.

The Pair-non-Pair grotto, a prehistoric cave with some spectacular drawings is about 15 minutes away.

For more active vacationing there are plenty of biking and hiking trails in the area.

Day Trips: Some of our previous guest’s favorite trips include visiting the Dune du Pyla in Arcachon—about 45 minutes away—and then visiting the coastal area for a seafood meal.

A visit to the Zoo de la Palmyre just north of Royan (about 1:45 hours from Le Mascaret) the best zoo in France, if not Europe, has been a hit with families with children.

Blaye and Bourg, both fortified cities, are within 25 minutes and offer a lot of history, wonderful views, and some great wines.

A visit to Cognac and its world famous Cognac distilleries is a must and it is less than 70 kilometers away.

Les Eyzies (about 2 hours east) with its caves and its prehistoric sites makes for a very interesting day trip.

This spacious stone farmhouse can comfortably accommodate up to 9 persons. On the ground floor there is a large farmhouse kitchen with dining area and an open fireplace. The kitchen has all modern appliances including microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, a large refrigerator, gas stove and oven. The kitchen opens to a large covered outdoor sitting area with a table and chairs, view to the garden and swimming pool. In the living area there are three sofas, a table with chairs, a TV, coffee tables, a stereo and a DVD player The living area opens up to the garden and a view of the swimming pool. In the back area on the ground floor there is a bedroom with a single bed and also a WC. Stairs lead to the first floor where you will find 1 bedroom with a double bed, a large bedroom with 1 double bed and 1 single bed, a private mezzanine with 1 double bed and 1 single bed, a bathroom with shower and WC, and a second bathroom with bathtub and WC. Outside there is garden furniture and a BBQ.

About L Falcon

The owners of Le Mascaret are two families, longtime friends, with a great appreciation for the beauty and culture of Europe in general and France in particular and who fell in love with the house and its environs at first sight. We first visited Le Mascaret in the summer of 2003 and became its owners in October 2003. We live in the Boston Massachusetts area and have extensive ties to Europe and travel there frequently. At some point in the future we hope to spend a great deal of time at Le Mascaret, but now because of job (higher education, nutrition research, software support, and environmental protection) and child rearing commitments (2 college age kids each) we are unable to do so. We have chosen to share it with others who will love it as well.

The property is very private and quiet. There are vineyards all around and a beautiful garden for relaxation. Both properties have been renovated and all the appliances have been recently updated. The swimming pool is three years old and has a beautiful terrace and lavender garden all around. The property is 3 acres and includes apple, plum, pear, and fig trees.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Our location offers many options. From total relaxation in the garden or pool to active sightseeing in the Gironde.

Le Mascaret is perfect for visting Bordeaux, Pomerol, and Saint Emilion--all within 20-25 minutes. The Medoc is about 30 minutes away. The Dune du Pyla and Cognac are close enough for day trips.

We are at the end of a quiet lane that leads to the Dordogne river with only the river, vineyards and one neighbor around us. There are small villages and larger towns nearby plus the entrance to the A10 is just 10 minutes away which provides quick access for day trips. Le Mascaret is 25 km from Saint Emilion, 30 km to Blaye, 50 km from Sauternes, and about 75 km from the Medoc. It is just 25 minutes from Bordeaux, under 45 minutes to the Bordeaux Merignac airport, and 60 minutes from the Atlantic ocean beaches. There are bakeries and small shops within 3-5 minutes and large supermarkets within 10-15 minutes.

Wonderful Holiday

Beautiful well equipped farmhouse and cottage. We really enjoyed our week here, we loved the property, it was nice to get away from it all and relax by the pool.
We visited St Emillion which was a very pretty town and well worth a visit, we also saw the dunes of pilait, which have stunning views and we had a tour and wine tasting at Château de la Rivière for €6, which is very reasonable and the sandstone cellars were amazing.
We had a fantastic time and would definatly like to return.

Le Mascaret is a beautiful and tranquil cottage in the Bordeaux area surrounded by vineyards. It has lovely gardens and a shared pool with the adjacent property and is the perfect setting for a tranquil and relaxing holiday. It was everything we had hoped for and provided the perfect base for a family holiday in the South of France. Dealings with the owner were very straightforward and pleasant, with lots of useful information provided ahead of time. A wonderful holiday from start to finish.

A beautiful place

A lovely, clean, well-equipped house in a tranquil setting, surrounded by gorgeous countryside. The property managers were friendly and helpful. Great local markets at Libourne and St.-Andre-de-Cubzac. We visited several wineries (reservation required) in St. Emilion and Margaux and numerous other interesting places. Our favourites were the Dune at Pyla, the prehistoric cave at Pair-non-Pair and Chateau de Roquetaillade. Favourite restaurant meals were at La Fourchette Dort in a nearby village, and La Gare Gourmande, near Margaux. We had a fantastic stay and hope to return. Car with GPS essential.

un beau séjour

Nous sommes deux familles avec chacune deux enfants et nous avons passé un merveilleux séjour au mascaret en avril 2010. La maison était très propre, spacieuse, conforme à l'annonce. De plus, le jardin, le terrain et la terrasse sont superbes et accueillants. Les enfants se sont bien amusés et nous avons découvert saint emilion, la dune du pyla, cap ferret et la ville merveilleuse de Bordeaux. Nous avons été ravis et enchantés de ce séjour. De plus, les personnes chargées de l'accueil sont très gentilles, à notre écoute et très disponibles. Nous reviendrons sans hésiter......

Lovely place by the Dordogne

Lovely place by the Dordogne – so many interesting places to visit that you cannot do them all. Surprised by St. Emilion. Arcachon area well worth traveling to for many reasons – the birds, canoeing, aqualand, sand dune and the basin.

Coutras and Gitre areas peaceful.

Didn’t manage to go travel north – maybe next time?! (Blaye and Cognac)
