Castello is an area of great historical importance. Several Renaissance villas are located within walking distance from the apartment. The Villa Reale and Villa Petraia, both belonging to the Medici family, are famous for their architecture and as striking examples of Italian formal gardens. Villa Petraia was also home to king Vittorio Emanuele II, who summered in Castello when Florence became the capital of Italy in 1865. Further down the road from Villa Petraia, you’ll see Villa Bel Riposo. Carlo Lorenzi Collodi, the author of Pinocchio lived here while he was writing this popular story. All the characters in Pinocchio were drawn from real persons living in and around Castello. Castello is an area of great natural beauty. Narrow roads wind along ancient stone walls up the mountainside. Marvel at the rustic farm houses and splendid villas that sit amongst acres of silver-leafed olive trees. Guests are invited to stroll throughout the Castello apartment's olive grove.
