We enjoyed our stay at your charming cottage. It was exactly the setting we were looking for; the lake view and the sunsets were terrific! The stone cottage along with the amenities were wonderful! We highly recommend your accommodation!

Mushroom Cottage

  • 5 of 5
The Earl Young cottage was a fairy tale cottage with modern amenities. We loved it! It was clean, comfortable and cozy. While there we enjoyed the shops and restaurants in Charlevoix, the wineries of the Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City, the Tunnel of Trees, walks on the beach and the search for Petoskey stones. Beautiful place!

A perfect second honeymoon

  • 5 of 5
Our stay here to celebrate our 20th anniversary could not have been more idyllic! Karen and Phil have thought of every detail to make it possible to do whatever you want, from exploring the area on bicycles, to enjoying the sunset from your seat by the campfire, to huddling on the comfy couch on a cool evening. The kitchen is extremely well stocked, the bed is very comfortable, and the grounds are as beautiful as can be (the view is pretty nice, too!). We were especially grateful to our hosts for accommodating our schedule. This was the perfect place to spend our second honeymoon. We only wish we had come here on our first one!

The Cottage by the Lake

  • 5 of 5
The Cottage by the Lake: Highlights of Our Summer Vacation

The sun descends on the blue waters of Lake Michigan
As the sky displays an array of red and magenta
And the tide hums a steady song of greeting to the shore

Nearby an enchanted cottage bedecked with a medley of stone and multicolored flowers
Weaves a magical spell of peace and harmony over a meadow of green grass
Flanked by trees of birch and of pine

Earlier in the day robins hopped along searching for early worms
A rabbit stood still listening to the plaints of the mourning dove
Throughout this fairyland of pleasant surprises, a wooden owl, a stone cat, and other artistic renditions appeared.

It was all wonderful!

This year's was every bit as good as last year's stay!

This year's was every bit as good as last year's stay!

We were delighted to return to this marvelous magic miniature Earl Young Mushroom House again this year and found our welcome just as gracious, the lawns and gardens and house just as beautiful as ever, the internet service even better, the supply of fine linens, towels, kitchen staples copious, and, as always, the owner as delighted to help as ever. When she saw that we had guests around the firepit, she immediately offered more chairs, more wood, lighter, and asked if there was more she could do. Another time, she welcomed the small dog of a guest and came out to talk about pets with the owner. The whole experience in this charming, perfectly-kept cottage was wonderful and we look forward to another stay!

Owner's Response: We are truly blessed to have so many of our guests, who have also become friends, return year after year to enjoy our Earl Young Guest House and our beautiful city. Thank you Bill and Pat for this wonderful comment and we will continue to strive to make all future stays as enjoyable.

Truly a Marvelous, Magic, Miniature Mushroom House!

  • 5 of 5
For many years, I have wanted to spend time in one of Earl Young's "Mushroom Houses" in Charlevoix since Young came from my hometown and I have a photo of a stone--mason uncle by marriage and Young working on a project together. Finally, my dream came true as when I found this small, perfect guest house. We've just returned from an early September totally successful week there. The house is enchanting and exactly as described; the owner Karen greeted us with a delightful champagne welcome tray of delectables; the house was superbly clean, cozy, and well-outfitted with plenty of towels, high pressure hot water, sheets, soaps, cleaning supplies, spices, oils, and basic cooking supplies. The two bathrooms, one off the bedroom and one off the living room area, make it easy to have guests on the comfortable hideaway bed/largle comfortable leather sofa in the living room. The beautiful, flower bedecked grounds leading down to the shores of Lake Michigan had many comfortable places to sit and to eat and to take advantage of the lovely weather that we had the whole week. When we had trouble getting on the internet, our hosts were right there and worked with us to make sure we got connected and then checked back the next day to see that all was still working.
A particularly delightful event a few miles away on the Mission Peninsula is at the beautiful :Chateau Chantal Winery, where, on two nights a week during the summer and fall, a special Chef Perry Harmon 7-course, 7-wine dinner is served to showcase their wines. We all agreed that the foods served as this dinner were among the very best we have eaten anywhere in the world...and a bargain at $55 plus tax and tip for both dinner and wines.
We've rented vacation homes throughout the U.S. and in Europe; this was one of the most welcoming, charming, cleanest, best-equipped ones, one that we have already enthusiastically told friends about and one to which we plan to return next summer.
