A charming, secluded hideaway nestled near the heart of Eastsound, At Home Cottage is one of seven homes in a quiet residential community surrounded by forested open space with walking trails to the center of town. At Home Cottage is a new home that has been thoughtfully furnished to make your stay on Orcas a memorable experience.
Built in the Craftsman style, it has a delightful flower-filled front porch with comfortable chairs and ottomans to put your feet up on and relax. Each cottage has a private patio and ours has been fenced and filled with trees, plants and flowers along with a bistro table and chairs to enjoy a morning cup of coffee or an afternoon lunch. When you’re ready to barbeque, you’ve got everything you need, along with a new Weber propane grill.
The living room has an electric fireplace for ambiance and is furnished with a comfortable sofa (that hides a queen bed) and wing-back reclining chairs perfect for relaxing and reading a good book or watching a movie on the large flat screen TV featuring DirectTV. An internet enabled Blu-ray DVD player is there for watching movies from our library or your own, or streaming NetFlix movies, Pandora music and much more. There is also a Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth speaker that allows you to enjoy your music from your smartphones, computer or notepads. It’s portable, so you can move it from room to room or out to the patio or porch, just as you would at home. You’ll also find original and engaging artwork from some well-known Orcas Island artists here and throughout this charming house to delight your eyes.
For the gourmet cook, the kitchen features all new stainless cookware and all the kitchen gadgets a casual or gourmet cook wants to find (along with sharp knives!). Whether you want to bake a cake, cupcakes, or a pie, or even cook up some waffles, you’ll find what you need. A full range of the most often used spices are supplied, along with a variety of other pantry items. We’ve even got some cookbooks to inspire you! If you just want to bake a pizza, there’s a pizza stone for the grill or oven, ready to use. Don’t want to cook, but want to blend a Margarita? We’ve got that covered, too.
The dining area features a long trestle table with benches that will seat six or a cozy 8 with added chairs. It’s the perfect place for assembling a puzzle, playing games or sitting down to a family meal. Linens and place mats are provided. The pantry area nearby contains everything you need to set a table for eight, and it also features a desk where you can pull up one of the stools and use your laptop or write post cards. USB hubs are here and scattered throughout the house for easy charging of all your electronics.
Upstairs you’ll find pillow top mattresses in both bedrooms, along with luxurious soft linens and lots of pillows. Like the living room, each one has a new internet-enabled flat screen TV and Blu-ray player, along with DirecTV. The rooms have delightful cross ventilation to take advantage of the cool marine breezes and also feature remote-controlled ceiling fans with dimmable lights.
The bathroom is spacious and features a large combination tub and shower with a curved shower bar. A mounted makeup mirror and hair dryer are provided. A washer and dryer are upstairs, along with an iron and ironing board. Laundry detergent (scented and unscented) along with stain remover are provided, making it easy to take care of laundry needs.
Throughout the house, you’ll find top-down, bottom up blinds which allow you to enjoy the sun and sky or the night stars, while giving you privacy when you want it. Overhead lights are dimmable both up and downstairs and we’ve scattered remote controlled candles throughout to add to the ambiance. We’ve also provided lap blankets for those cool evenings on the porch, and even a backrest pillow and laptop desk for those who like to browse the internet from the comfort of their bed.
One of the delights of this quaint residential neighborhood is that it is so close to everything in Eastsound, yet it is a quiet and private place for relaxing at the end of a busy day. Shopping, restaurants and wonderful bakeries, public beaches, museum, the Village Green, Saturday Farmer's Market, library - all are only steps away from your door here in At Home Cottage. Convenient parking at your cottage door lets you come and go as you please, or simply park the car and leave it there for a change! A communal lawn is perfect for games and a delightful covered outdoor pavilion has a large picnic table and wood burning fireplace for roasting marshmallows.
Eastsound’s Waterfront Park is just a short walk and across the street from At Home Cottage. It is one of the most scenic parks on Orcas Island with breathtaking views of Indian Island and Fishing Bay. Whether you want to explore Indian Island and the tidal pools at low tide, play games on the lawn or just relax and enjoy the view, we’ve provided you with the means to do it all (do bring an old pair of shoes you don’t mind getting wet, or a pair of boots to really enjoy the tidal offerings). If you’re coming for the 4th of July, you won’t have a better place to stay to enjoy the fireworks at the park!
Enjoy the fresh marine air, cool evening breezes and our sunny summer days. Evening is the time for romantic walks on the beach, having a refreshing drink on the cottage porch, enjoying a fire in the pavilion's outdoor fireplace, or simply relishing the peace and quiet after an idyllic day spent exploring our gem of an island. Whatever you choose to do, we think you’ll feel right at home in our cottage, which is just what we intended!
Our family is naturally attracted to Orcas Island through my husband Tom who was raised in these islands. He lived on a farm on Shaw Island and commuted to high school on Orcas in the daily mail-boat. He left the island, as most of his friends did then, after high school.
We visited when our children were very young, and I fell in love with the island. We thought about it many times as we moved around in our working lives, and eventually found an opportunity to move here in 2001.
In the years since we've moved here, we've hosted friends and family here on Orcas and delighted in introducing them to the beauty of our island home. A good number of them have now come to live here as well.
Tom is a local historian and he's written a book on behalf of the local museum in the Images of America series entitled Orcas Island. A copy of it is in the cottage for your enjoyment.
Jenny Welch purchased this cottage in 2014
When I found At Home Cottage, it was love at first sight and I knew it would be the perfect spot to give our guests a real sense of what it's like to live here on Orcas Island and enjoy everything it has to offer. Newly constructed, the cottage has been thoughtfully filled with everything I could think of to make your vacation a carefree delight. I hope you enjoy staying in it as much as I do!
Minutes from all attractions, At Home Cottage is located mere steps away from Eastsound's Waterfront Park overlooking beautiful Indian Island and Fishing Bay. Launch your kayak, explore the shore or just relax in the park and enjoy the breathtaking view. Walk to shopping, fine dining, bakeries, the museum, the Farmers Market and all Village attractions.
3 of us rented this lovely home. It is in perfect condition and completely stocked (kitchen eq, fan, toilet paper, shampoo, etc). The owner has thought of everything, even a nice welcome gift. The house is a block from the water/park , as well as restaurants which I thought were the best in all the San Juan Islands. The owner is very helpful, even letting us know how many cars were lined up for the ferry. Orcas is my favorite island and this is the place to stay.
Over the past 20 years, we have stayed in a number of vacation homes in Europe and the US. This may be the most thoughtfully well-equipped home we've stayed in. The owner went above and beyond the norm to provide a comfortable and convenient base for exploring Orcas Island and neighboring islands. With great attention to details such as lighting and in-home entertainment options (wifi, Netflix, Pandora, quality DVDs, a variety of books), the owner seems to have anticipated every need. The house is clean, beautifully maintained, and beautifully landscaped. Super well-supplied with kitchen equipment and utensils. The private patio and comfortable front porch are perfect for enjoying morning coffee or evening refreshments. We particularly liked that there are facilities for recycling both clean recyclables and compost-appropriate food waste. Communications with the owner were some of the smoothest and most pleasant we've had. This is a vacation rental that we would recommend without hesitation.
Several restaurants are within walking distance in Eastsound Village. If you're lucky, Truffle Fries will be on the menu at the New Leaf Cafe. Freshly baked bread at Rose's Bakery and Cafe or pastries from the Brown Bear Bakery. Kayak or bicycle rental is available in Eastsound and elsewhere on Orcas. From the cottage, it is an easy drive to Deer Harbor for motor boat rental, either closed cabin or inflatable. For great views of the San Juan Islands or hiking trails, Mt. Constitution in Moran State Park is top of the list.
My first visit to Orcas was amazing and largely because of the comfortable home base we had right in the Eastsound. The home is charming and extremely well equipped with anything and everything you might need to make yourself comfortable. We would definitely consider booking again next summer!
We enjoyed a fabulous week at this Orcas cottage! It is so close to everything. We could walk across the street to the water or down the road to the cute stores and coffee shops. Every little detail was thought of including items we could borrow to help us enjoy our stay like games, chairs to take to the beach and even a cooler...that was very helpful! Our favorite parts were sipping coffee on the pretty porch surrounded by flowers; roasting marshmallows at the outside fireplace; and feeling the cool breeze flow over us as we slept in the super soft beds; I could see the view off the mountain from my bed-absolutely wonderful.
We are remiss in a bit tardy review of this Eastsound gem! We couldn't have been happier to be the first guests for this darling cottage a couple weeks ago!
Jennie was very responsive from first inquiry on booking, to great island recommendations, ensuring our stay was comfortable. A lovely tart from the delicious Brown Bear Bakery awaited us after a long day of travel up from Portland. Thoughtful + delicious! (We found ourselves frequenting it almost every day as a result!)
And the place only unfolded more treats as we discovered EVERYTHING was considered to make our stay easy, accommodated + comfortable! We both stay at a number of "home away from home" rentals + this was the most thoughtful we have stayed in. From the best stocked kitchen (including rare to have French press, blender, nice pans/cookware, sharp knives, composting, microplaner, seasonings, olive oil), reliable wifi, fantastic USB chargers throughout, detailed notebook with info on cottage + activities specific to our stay, clean linens (that don't smell like mildew!), grill, beach + park activity supplies (folding chairs, blanket, cooler, lawn games)....all set in a quiet little community with a shared covered outdoor space with picnic tables + fireplace should you have inclement weather but still want to be outside.
The location, while not beachfront, is conveniently close to a quiet park on the sound + a quick few minute walk to all the shops, coffee/bakery + pubs. Making it perfect for darting back for anything left behind! Centrally located on the island also made it convenient to reach all activities on the island (Moran State Park, whale watching, hiking Turtleback, etc). And what a great spot for July 4th celebrations!
Beds are very comfortable + the cottage very well cared for. The art looks mostly local + is beautiful throughout the space!
We left without feeling anything needed improved on or seemed lacking during our stay. In fact, we find ourself at another rental back home on the Oregon coast today remarking "We wish they were as thoughtful as Jennie!"
Thank you for providing such a memorable, comfortable + thoughtful place for our vacation!
While a car is not necessary to enjoy all that Eastsound Village has to offer, you might want to have one to explore Orcas Island to its fullest. Beautiful Moran State Park and Mount Constitution are a scant 8 miles away. Fishing, swimming, and hiking are only some of the things to enjoy on the trails and lakes of this wonderful park. Crescent Beach is the best walking beach on Orcas and it's a short 1/2 mile walk from At Home Cottage. Kayaking is available on Crescent Beach, as well. A very short walk from the cottage will find you at Waterfront park where you can relax on the grassy shore (beach blanket and chairs are available for you to use) and delight in the views of the entire sound or walk to Indian Island at low tide to explore the ecosystem there. There's sand and rocks to explore at low tide and we've provided sand toys for children to enjoy.
Fourth of July festivities, along with many other community events, are centered around nearby Waterfront park and you'll be in the midst of it all, while remaining peacefully secluded in Alderwood Cottages' forested setting.
Like all of Eastsound, we're in the path of our small local airport and small planes can be heard taking off from time to time during the day.
