Overview

Sooke House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedroom fully equipped house on 1.5 acres of beachfront garden.

Poirier Cove has everything you need for a family vacation, a romantic getaway or fun with friends.

The private, 180 degree view beach is perfect for picnicking, watching wildlife visitors in the bay, swimming out to the bird rock, or setting off for a paddle. You can scramble up the rock to watch the sunset - or the sunrise. There are two expansive lawns for the kids to play on - badminton, croquet or soccer. There's a firepit for roasting hot dogs or marshmallows - or keeping warm when the sun sets.

And then there's the view, which always seems to be changing. Away in the distance, over the Juan de Fuca straits, you can see the snow-capped mountains of Olympic national park. You can spend a day quite happily with a pair of binoculars watching birds squabble over their place on the rock in the middle of the bay, spotting bald eagles and ospreys, or waiting for the seal family to visit - perhaps even a passing whale. Or you can set off to explore the wild west coast of Vancouver Island.

Inside the kitchen, sitting room and dining room all look out over the ocean. The kitchen has everything you need if you choose to eat in. The dining table seats 6, and the comfortable living room has a fireplace. You'll find a woodpile next to the garage. We've left plenty of board games and books for evenings around the fire, but there's also wifi and TV with blueray player if you prefer.

The master bedroom has a queen bed, the other has twin beds. There's a good quality hideaway bed for a fifth person if required.

Poirier Cove is a short drive from Sooke's shops and restaurants; miles of sandy beaches; west coast rain forest - or 45 minutes to downtown Victoria. The ideal place for a vacation!

About Corinne and Raouf Saad

We're a family of 5 - the kids range from 20 to 12. Raouf comes from Egypt - Corinne from the UK. We've made Canada our home for the last 20 years - Edmonton, Alberta to be precise. One of our favourite holiday destinations has always been the west coast of Vancouver Island... camping when the kids were small, then renting holiday homes. There's lots to do, and it is incredibly beautiful.

Corinne and Raouf Saad purchased this house in 2014

Why Corinne and Raouf Saad chose Sooke

This spring we found Poirier Cove for sale - quite by chance - and fell in love with the place. It's unusual for the area in that it's right on the beach with plenty of open lawns around it. The view is stunning. We jumped at the opportunity to buy the perfect house in the perfect location.

Magical

  • 5 of 5

What an incredible place. We originally planned to use this as our home-base from which to do lots of island touring (we are avid hikers and cyclists) and to sample local restaurants. But upon arriving we found all we really wanted to do was stay home and relax on the beach and the sunny deck; basking in the priceless views and warm, wonderful feeling of the home itself. We watched the otters and seals frolic in the waves and cormorants sunning themselves on the huge, offshore rock with the Olympic mountain range providing a stunning backdrop. I'm an avid gardener, so took great pleasure in wandering the large property, investigating the many gardens Corinne tends. There really is something magical about this place. From a practical point of view, the house had everything we needed and more. We felt in the lap of unpretentious luxury. The booking was easy, there were no surprises other than the wow factor! We most highly recommend this for families, or a couple, or just for a few days on your own in the peace and inspiration of this little piece of paradise.

Relaxing and convenient!

  • 4 of 5

We had a really good and relaxing time here in Poirer Cove. It was our first time to rent a house as opposed to staying in hotels, but it was a good experience overall! We liked the freedom especially my husband who enjoyed playing with the woods and built himself a bench by the shore. Corinne has also been very quick and helpful in responding to our questions/needs. It's not a house for luxurious comfort but a good one to stay for simplicity, privacy, and awesome views. Well-priced!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review, Anne-Marie. You're right - it's a different experience from staying in a hotel. I think we're providing much more than accomodation. We're very fortunate to have a house in such a stunning location. Our goal is to provide guests a comfortable home from which to enjoy the beauty around them: the view; the cormorants on the rock occasionally giving up their spot for the bald eagle; the otters, seals and sea lions fishing in the cove. I gather the grey whales were passing when you were here - I wonder if you saw them? And we've just installed floor to ceiling windows along the ocean facing side of the house to really bring the outdoors in. We also do have a very well stocked kitchen (even down to the rice cooker you requested) because most guests prefer to cook here and enjoy their surroundings. The one thing we have in common with a hotel is a meticulous attention to cleanliness.

Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a peaceful spot to get some writing done, and found it at this warm family home overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. From the well-stocked wood bin and kindling for the fireplace to the timely 'checking in' call from Corinne, the owners clearly care about their renters well-being. The home is comfortable and spotless, with wonderful light even on the greyest of winter days. Great storm watching. Great sleeps. The eight relaxing days passed too quickly. Wish I was back there now.

Fantastic View, Fantastic Time

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I spent two nights at the cove and we absolutely loved our time there. All of the amenities were comfortable and the place was impeccably clean and prepared for our arrival. Corinne was very attentive and communicated quickly either via email or phone whenever we had any questions. Highly recommended!

Poirier Cove is 10 mins west of Sooke, right on the beach. 15 minutes down the road is French Beach, and just beyond that beautiful China Beach and the start of the Juan de Fuca hiking trail.

If you venture 45 minutes further up the road, you'll get to Port Renfrew's Botanical Beach, and its incredible tidal pools. At low tide, there's hours of fun exploring and watching these mini salt-water worlds.

The other side of Sooke is East Sooke park with over 50 kms of trails. We like to park at the far end at Pike Point, walk through the rain forest down to the beach and then along the top of the cliffs. Or you can just park at Aylard Farm and walk 5 minutes down to a beautiful sandy beach with lots of drift wood for building a great fort.

If you'd like to bike, you can pick up the Galloping Goose trail just east of Sooke, head up for an adventure to the Sooke Potholes or for an easier ride to Matheson Lake. Either way you get a swim.

Launch your kayak on our beach, and paddle round to Sooke to get your groceries, or on into the Sooke Basin to birdwatch.

Jordan River is 25 minutes away, with the best waves for miles around for surfing.

And then there's the fishing - go out with one of the boats from Sooke, and you'll be sure to catch salmon, or, at the right time of year, halibut. You can also try your luck from the shore. Apparently Otter Point is the one place where catching salmon is possible from the rocks.

Sooke itself has several grocery stores to choose from. Our treat after a day hiking is the Little Vienna Bakery for tea and cake. Or you can also get excellent sandwiches there for your picnic. Sooke has a wide choice of restaurants; the Harbour House of course is one of Canada's finest restaurants, a special treat for dinner or more affordable for Sunday lunch. Just by the Harbour House is Whiffen Spit, which is a great place for a quick dog walk.

Downtown Victoria is 45 minutes away. The Royal BC Museum is well curated, and great for kids if it's a rainy day. The Bug Museum is a big hit too. It's also fun to stroll around the harbour, watching the boats and the street performers and artists. There are plenty of whale watching tours setting out from the harbour too, and you're guaranteed to see whales.

Victoria has Canada's oldest Chinatown, with good restaurants and little alleys to explore.

The Butchart Gardens are about an hour away from Poirier Cove, but well worth a visit. We were always put off by the price, but then decided they were definitely worth it.

This part of Vancouver Island definitely has something for everyone - you can be as active or as lazy as you want. You can eat fantastic food out, or hot dogs over the fire pit on the beach. You can race up hills on a mountain bike, or stroll along the cliffs and beaches watching wildlife. You can paddle quietly with seals or zoom out to the ocean on a kodiak. Or you can just walk out of your door and down on to the beach for the day. Whatever you choose, you'll love it.
