Ready to get away from it all? Looking for a remote nest to quietly reflect, write a book, explore the Big Island? If so, this is the retreat for you! Nestled in Wood Valley of the Big Island this hale was constructed to allow its occupants the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the beauty of Hawai'i. Large opening French doors on three sides of the home and an enclosed lanai provide ample opportunity to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of this enchanting piece of Hawai'ian paradise. Stroll about the grounds and find a tasty tangerine, orange, or avocado. Don't forget to stop by the orchid tree and enjoy the beauty of the flowers! The coffee trees also impress with either their bright red 'cherries,' or a dusting of snow-white blossoms. No matter where you look beauty abounds in the lovely Wood Valley.
Take a stroll down to the Wood Valley Buddhist Temple and take some time to calm your body and mind in quiet meditation. Morning and evening prayers are open to all . . . and the peacocks always enjoy seeing new faces!
After spending the morning listening to the morning songs of the birds and rustling of the wind through the bamboo, head down to the Big Island's prized Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. Hang out at the beach for the afternoon and enjoy basking in the sun and swimming in the surf with the local Green Sea Turtles (Honu). Take a hike along the shore and explore the tide-pools and hidden heiaus. The beauty of Hawai'i's coastline never disappoints those who seek the solace of the sea.
Once one has had one's fill of quiet contemplation and reclusion, explore a bit further--27 miles--and experience the 'heartbeat of the Earth' firsthand at Volcanoes National Park. Drive, bike, and hike the multitude of roads and paths covering this most unique piece of the globe. See lava flowing from the depths of the planet, ancient Hawai'ian petroglyphs, and native Hawai'ian fauna and flora.
Of course, if one longs for a night out 'on the town,' both Hilo and Kailua-Kona are approximately a two-hour drive away. Each city boasts its own noteworthy attractions, restaurants, and shopping centers.
We look forward to welcoming you with Aloha to Wood Valley Retreat!
Aloha! Nearly fifteen years ago I visited Wood Valley Buddhist Temple and fell in love with the quiet solitude of this area. Over the years I have slowly constructed my peaceful Wood Valley Retreat--my 'home away from home.' Friends and family alike have helped me in this endeavor and Wood Valley Retreat is a wonderful synthesis of a multitude of creative energies and aloha.
Kirsten Freed purchased this cabin in 2000
In the late 1980s I visited Hawaii during one of my hiking expeditions. I fell in love with Hawai'i in general, and Wood Valley specifically. All I wanted to do was share the peaceful beauty of this area with my friends and family. Thus began my on going passion for providing others with the opportunity to experience this enchanting land.
Solitude, peace, and quiet are the primary reasons to stay at Wood Valley Retreat. This is NOT the place for individuals interested in bar-hopping, nightclubs, tourist traps, and 'shopping.' This IS the place for people wanting to savor the peacefulness, serenity, and quiet of one of the remaining remnants of historical Hawai'i.
