A one-bedroom and a two-bedroom apartment, pool, gardens and social room

Former farmstead delightfully converted into top-quality self-catering accommodation in the Picos de Europa, Cantabria, Northern Spain. Perfect combination of rustic charm and modern comforts. Part of an 8-apartment (of 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms) establishment in Tudes, Cantabria Village of the Year 2010 - a quiet, sunny yet living village. Wonderful mountain views. Family-run (joint British/Spanish). Each apartment is fully independent and furnished and equipped to very high standard. Decoration includes charming murals by local artists. Communal areas consist of swimming pool (warmed by solar panels), social room (pool table, large-screen TV, DVDs, free Internet access, games, library, maps and information), gardens laid to grass, stone, brick and flower beds (with table football) and a lovely wooden-roofed entrance with seating beneath, ideal for relaxing in the shade. Old perimeter wall creates effect of a village within a village. Owners have a bar in the village with pool and darts.

Food and drink: The kitchen is extremely well appointed, making self catering an obvious and attractive option. There are well-stocked supermarkets in Potes (a 10 minute drive). For those wishing to eat out, there are restaurants and other eating houses in Potes and La Vega (10 minutes by car), and in some of the other villages in the area. Details are included in the information pack provided on arrival.

The water comes straight from a mountain spring. While to date no guests have experienced problems with it, buying bottled water is of course an option.

How To Get Here: There is now greatly improved (and cheaper) access to the Picos de Europa from the UK. Ryanair have frequent flights from London Stansted to Santander and Valladolid and (depending o the season) from Liverpool to Santander. EasyJet fly from Stansted to Oviedo and Bilbao. There are Plymouth - Santander and Portsmouth - Bilbao ferry crossings. From Santander the journey by car to Tudes takes 1 1/2 hours (1 3/4 from Oviedo, 2 1/4 from Bilbao and Valladolid). There are also two buses a day from Santander to Potes. Detailed instructions on how to reach Tudes will be provided following booking.

The Social Room: One of the most popular features of La Casa de Las Chimeneas is the social room, open to anyone staying in the apartment. It contains a number of different areas each with its own atmosphere:

- two sofas before a wood-burning stove, with maps, leaflets etc nearby.

- a pool table and other games.

- a large-screen TV for watching films, DVDs, football matches or whatever.

- a computer with free Internet access, for those who want, or need, to stay in touch.

- a small library.

Careful conversion of part of old farmhouse to create a spacious, comfortable, light and fully independent apartment. Superb mountain views from both lounge and bedroom (from the bed itself!). Entrance:from external patio. Ground floor: separate, fully equipped, kitchen with tiled floor leading to lounge (with wooden table and chairs and sofa-bed). Wooden staircase to: first floor with large bedroom (room for supplementary bed) and bathroom (bath, shower, wash basin, hair drier) . Some original stone walls. Woodwork a mix of original oak beams and new pine and chestnut. Furnished to very high standard. Decoration includes wonderful murals based on medieval illustrations. Central heating and wood-burning stove. TV and DVD. Washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, oven, hob, fridge, toaster and kettle.

Tudes - Cantabria Village of the Year 2010 - is 2,000 feet up in the spectacular Picos de Europa, which reach over 8,000 feet. Many of its 30 inhabitants still farm the land and can be seen herding their cattle and sheep through the strees. The starting point for many delightful walks, this pretty, quiet, sunny village is just 10 minutes from the market town of Potes, the focal point of local life. it is the ideal base for exploring the area. It has a bar (opened in 2009) under the same management as La Casa.

The Picos offer spectacular flora and fauna (abundant birds of prey, a fantastic variety of wild flowers and butterflies, the Iberian bear and wolf on the remote higher ground). Exploring the charming villages, sampling the local cuisine, horse riding (or doing more energetic adventure activities) are a few of the many ways to enjoy this wonderful part of northern Spain, which has an almost Mediterranean climate in summer and is only an hour from the sandy Cantabrian beaches.

Fabulous Stay

This beautiful set of apartments in the center of a working farm village is an ideal place for exploring the stunning scenery of the Picos de Europa. The owners, Tony and Lucia, have managed a remarkable renovation of an old farmstead, creating elegant modern apartments but preserving the stone walls and wooden beams of the original building. From the outside, the complex looks like the other ancient buildings in the village, while inside one lives with all modern conveniences (including a kitchen in which one could really COOK) and beautiful artistic touches. The place is truly unique.

Tony and Lucia are charming, helpful hosts and provide extensive information for activities in the national park. Access to the village is easy, and parking (on the main square, among foraging chickens) is free. The fact that this is a real farm village adds to the enjoyment -- I can still hear in my mind the sound of cowbells and the occasional bleating of sheep. From our windows we had a view of a small farm in the foreground and snow-capped mountain peaks in the distance. One could not ask for more.

We have traveled extensively in Europe (thirty or more trips over many years) and have stayed in numerous holiday apartments. La Casa de las Chimeneas tops them all.

A little bit of heaven!

We stayed in Casa de las chimeneas from July 10th for 6 nights in the 1 bedroom apartment with our 3 boys. The boys were delighted when it rained most of the first day we arrived as they could enjoy the games room uninterrupted by walks! The views from the living room are amazing, beautiful apartment everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Swimming pool was great when the weather improved. Great base for walks in the area and down to Potes 10 min drive down the hill. Facilities great for kids and adults. Really enjoyed our stay - enjoyed the drinks on the veranda of the taverna looking out at the mountains. Tudes is a really beautiful village. Owners very friendly and helpful - lovely to get warm bread and croissants from the taverna in the mornings!

This is a lovely apartment, clean, well maintained and appointed. The welcome pack upon arrival was indeed most welcome after a long drive.

The apartment has the most magnificent views of the Picos from both the living area on the ground level and the bedroom on the first floor. We were also very impressed by the beautiful wall murals. Tony and his family were very helpful and welcoming, giving lots of useful information about Tudes and the surrounding area. There are also some useful books in the communal lounge to assist with hiking ideas. We added to this with the blue Sunflower guide of the area which might inspire others.

As we self catered we can't suggest any good restaurants but Tony has a very comprehensive listing in the apartment. The El Ingles bar across the road was a great place for a drink though at the end of the day to watch the sun go down.

The only comment I could make would of the website photos which could be more clearly labelled to show the different apartments. Also, probably a personal view and may not be shared others, is that the bidet cluttered up the otherwise very nice bathroom (does anyone really use a bidet or perhaps as Australians we don't tend to use them?).

We had a wonderful week and would not hesitate to recommend to others and would definitely return if we are in the area again.
