Howard and I were born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and both of us, coincidentally, moved north at the age of 14; Howard to Colorado and I to Minnesota. We did our graduate work at the University of Colorado and have lived in Boulder ever since. Though we love the mountains and Colorado, we missed the water; so we began looking for a place where we could have both. We fell in love with Grand Lake instantly, purchased our land in 1992, began construction in 2001, and moved into our dream vacation home at the end of 2002. Our 3 daughters have grown up here and love to come back to this special place.
Having grown up on the ocean we missed the water. We began searching for lake front property close to Boulder and a lake large enough for sailing, water skiing, and other boating activities as well as a boating community. Finally, we wanted a town that had history and was authentic. Grand Lake is Colorado's largest and deepest natural lake. Shadow Mountain Lake, though technically a reservoir, is connected to Grand Lake via a canal and kept at a constant level so for all practical purposes it is a lake. We liked the fact that there's a yacht club, two marinas, several good restaurants, and a charming village center. The proximity of Rocky Mountain National Park with its spectacular mountains and wildlife are an incredible bonus.
We fell in love with the view of Baldy framed by bluffs. We liked the south east exposure, proximity to town, and year round accessibility. And we wanted to be on Shadow Mountain Lake rather than Grand Lake because it has less boat traffic and it's eastern shore can never be developed because it is in the National Park.
