About Joni Leeper/ Jim Meadows

Jim Meadows and Joni Leeper are brother and sister who grew up in San Clemente, Ca. I moved to Maui in 1987 and the family came to visit a year later. While on vacation the family spent time in Hana and fell in love with it. Shortly after vacation our Mother Jackie as well as my brothers all moved to Maui. We bought property in Kihei as well as Hana. Mom lived out the rest of her life in Hana, and we got to enjoy the family property over the years. Now, Jim and I are managing the property and my husband Craig and I live here in Hana full time. We are blessed to call this our home and look forward to sharing this wonderful part of Maui with many.

Joni Leeper/ Jim Meadows purchased this house in 1988

Why Joni Leeper/ Jim Meadows chose Hana

This was always our 'getaway' from the other side of the island, and to spend time with our Mom. A beautiful property with a stunning ocean view and the quiet serenity that Hana always has. A family home with a lot of love.

What makes this house unique

This property is know around town as the house with the bridge! It sits on a half acre full of tropical flowers, fruits, and singing birds. Across the street is the Hana ranch and we see cows grazing and pheasants nesting. A huge banyan tree across the street shades the driveway as you pull into the property.

Spacious and comfortable accomodations in the heart of Hana

  • 5 of 5
Three of us (my husband and myself and our dear friend/traveling buddy) had a very pleasant stay in this lovely home. We were here over Halloween and it was fun to see how Joni and Craig had decorated their house and got in the spirit of the night, handing out candy to the multitudes (!!) of Hana children who came by trick-or-treating. That was a bonus for us and it was nice to see such local spirit! Joni and Craig were great hosts - kind and warm, helpful yet unobtrusive. The accommodations: master bedroom is very spacious and has a killer view, the second bedroom is nicely decorated and quieter. The furnishings and décor are excellent, as is the supply of towels. Only drawback is that you have to go through the second bedroom to get to the bathroom, so keep that in mind when assigning rooms. Great place for a family. Well-equipped kitchen and excellent barbecue outside. We brought as many groceries as we could from Kahului - shopping selection in Hana is very limited, as are eating places. Local grinds were all good - especially Brudda Hutts on the highway and Troy's on the Koki Beach road. They all have limited hours and limited supplies, though, so if they're open, get some food to go and reheat later. Let Joni and Craig guide your choice of activities if you have not been here before, or even if you have. One more thing: our Sprint and Verizon phones worked fine here and the free Wi-Fi was great to have. All in all, we had a very laid-back time in this very laid-back place. Hana no ka oi! Mahalo Joni and Craig!

Hana Rental

  • 5 of 5
Everything was very good in Hana. The hosts were especially nice and helpful in every way. The only difficulty was backing out of the steep driveway with a larger than desired rental car that scraped the bottom with its long wheel base and short clearance. Not much that can be done about this. Again, a lovely stay.

Owner's Response: Aloha Scott,
Thank you for taking time to write a review. We appreciate the comments and feedback. We are glad you had a good time. We know our driveway is a bit tricky and hopefully down the road we can make it a little easier, but for now we give our guests an option to park up on the road as well.
Again, thank you for staying with us and the nice review!

Excellent base for a stay in Hana

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I started our honeymoon at this property. We stayed two nights and were quite satisfied. After landing in Maui at noon, picking up a car, grabbing lunch, and shopping a bit, the road to Hana was mostly free of traffic and we reached town at 4:30 or so. The drive was as curvy as you may have heard, but the drive was enjoyable. The midsize care I rented was plenty small enough for the close quarters, but a compact might be more comfortable for some people. The owned also provided excellent updates and recommendations about the condition of the road, which was useful and appreciated. On arrival, one of the owners met us at the property, showed us around, and made them selves available for questions and recommendations on the local attractions and activities.
Another of the owners gave us a quick SUP board lesson after driving us to beach with some gear to use. There are a lot of cool things to do within walking distance or drives under 15 minutes. On the last day we hiked to the red sand beach then hit the road at 10am and had time for the "Sacred Pools" hike all the way to the top, lunch, a drive to the top of Haleakala, and arrived in Kaanapali at sunset.

Things to know:
This property is something of a duplex with the owner's portion of the home above the rented section. This just means that someone may be home above you. It didn't bother my wife or I, especially since we were out exploring most times.
Hana doesn't have a massive selection in their grocery stores. This property has a well equipped kitchen as well as a nice outdoor grill with provided propane. I recommend stopping in a grocery store in Kahului (where you probably landed in Maui) and stocking up on provisions at one of the natural food stores or any of the more convention groceries. You can typically hit fruit stands on the way to Hana for local in-season fruit. Many local restaurants are only open for lunch and the rest are pricey but tasty enough.
There is a street light that shines into the front bedroom. We didn't have any trouble sleeping after playing all day, so it didn't bother us. It may be an issue for some, so it is worth knowing.
There WILL be dogs around. They are friend, behaved, and fenced.

Bottom line: A perfect start for the outdoor-centric vacationer in Maui. It is nicer than many of the other rentals I walked by in Hana, and priced very fairly. It isn't a secluded spot, but it is charming and romantic all the same.

Owner's Response: Aloha Justin,
Thank you for staying with us and making us the start of your honeymoon! We strive to make our home comfortable, with all the amenities and essentials you need to enjoy your stay.
We do live on property, but give our guests all the privacy they need. We also like to share our knowledge Hana and the fun things to do.
We do live in a residential area so there is a street light outside the bedroom window, but black out curtains are available for those of you that are light sensitive.
Thanks again for your great review and we look forward to having you here again for your anniversary!

Wonderful Hana home

  • 5 of 5
The description accurately describes this place. Joni and Craig were very informative and helpful, but they also gave you space to enjoy Hana on your own. I definitely recommend visitors to tap into their great knowledge of the area. We tried to cover it all in the three days we stayed in the area. And our hosts were always able to provide valuable information when asked -- like go to the state park early before all those making a one-day trip to Hana arrive. Our family of six slept comfortably, although some would have preferred more privacy due to sheer curtains and the need to sleep with open windows. Roosters outside were a bit loud in the morning, especially with the open windows, so not a place to really sleep in. But we liked getting early starts anyway. Saw sunrise at Fagan's Cross. Even though we are not pet owners, the dogs were not a problem. Kids really loved the boogie boards and Hamoa Beach was perfect spot for using them. If you are in Hana on Thursday you have to try Troy's for lunch. And the Thai food in town was outstanding. Keep in mind that most places close early and the Thai place and Troy close when they run out of food. We arrived around 4 p.m. our first day and all our chosen food places were closed. The next day we had Thai for lunch and loved it so much, we ordered dinner to go. Thanks for opening your home up to us Craig and Joni. You have a wonderful place to relax and enjoy Hana.

Thank you for your wonderful review! We really enjoyed having your family stay with us and always enjoy sharing our amazing little town with visitors! Hana is definitely a place to stay for a few days to explore and enjoy all the sights. We are lucky to have great little eateries around town if you don't want to cook.
Sunrise over the ocean is so gorgeous and seeing it from Fagans cross is simply stunning!
Again, it was a pleasure having your family here and we look forward to seeing you again!

Great stay in Hana

  • 5 of 5
Joni was very helpful and responsive. The property itself was clean and well maintained. We highly enjoyed our stay here while exploring the Hana area (nice sunrise view from the property and good location to stay overnight while driving the road to Hana). We also promptly received our damage deposit back soon after our stay. Thank you!
