Overview

Stockbridge House Rental Photos and Description

Newly Constructed. Modern Home Bright With Natural Light And Beautiful Carpentry

We call this house 'South Sedgwick' because of its location on a piece of land formerly used by the Sedgwick family for picnicking--an ideal spot for relaxation with stunning views of Monument Mountain and Ice Glen.

The house is newly constructed with ash hardwood floors, custom white pine trim and mahogany decks. The interior has an open-concept floor plan inviting abundant natural light. Custom built-in features include a handmade nook bench looking out over an expansive nature preserve, a vibracustic hydrotherapy spa tub, an upstairs coffee porch, and more.

We have a first floor master suite. If you require handicap access please contact us regarding your needs.

Beautiful, big back yard opens into 11 acres of wooded land, where the Konkapot brook runs nearby. For those with a sense of adventure, trek through the woods and use this brook as a push off spot for leisurely kayaking through nearby rivers with gorgeous natural vistas. For the less experienced adventurer, there is an easily accessible kayak push off .1 miles away. Toward the western border of the house lies scenic railway tracks, now concealed by forest. The historic train station is only .3 miles away.

This prime location is in the center of the cultural epicenter known as the Berkshires. Nearby attractions include: Tanglewood, Berkshire Theater Festival, Naumkegg Gardens, and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.

About Teva Smith

Nick and I bought this house in 2007. I was eager to learn about building and Nick an old friend, who at the age of four had asked for a tool belt for Christmas was willing to help. We started to plan a renovation of the old house and realized while we were assessing the amount of renovations that were going to be necessary there really was not much we could save. Nick and I then went through a painstaking slow process of deconstructing the house by hand hoping to find something to salvage. In the end we tore it completely down and built the house back up with our own hands. Using the best quality materials and Nick's eye for design, we constructed an amazing home that we are proud of. The story of the perseverance, hard work and creative ideas that went into this house is truly uplifting and you will feel that way while staying here.

Why Teva Smith chose Stockbridge

We loved the location. Walking distance to downtown Stockbride with a large piece of land. Right in the center of the most happening places in the Berkshires. A drive to Lee, Lenox or Great Barrington is about the same. Less than 10 minutes.

What makes this house unique

We love the views from this property. We were excited when we found out the Sedgwick family used to picnic on the land because of the unique views.

The many outdoor seating areas are truly special as is the bright and modern inside.

Immaculate, comfortable house

  • 5 of 5

We spent Christmas in this large sunny house--great light even during the short, dark days of winter. Teva was very welcoming. Told us where to get a fresh Christmas tree nearby and left a stand and Christmas lights for us. I forgot some clothing in the house when I left and he kindly mailed it back to me.

Amazing house!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for a few days to celebrate an important family birthday with our adult children. The house is beautiful, spacious, airy and bright. The bedrooms are lovely and comfortable and there are numerous common spaces--inside and out--scattered throughout the house. We had 5 people staying, and could have comfortably had many more. Teva was great to deal with ahead of time and at our arrival, and welcomed us upon our arrival with champagne and cheese. The grounds are also beautiful, and it was an easy walk into Stockbridge. Just wish we had been staying longer!

Clean, Bright and Well Appointed

  • 5 of 5

We found this property to be new, spacious, bright, clean and well constructed with great attention to detail. Lots of skylights give a warm feeling. It is central to many great attractions in the Berkshires, including museums and Tanglewood. The owners were pleasant and helpful well beyond average, with a pleasant and generous amount of hospitality. Our first impression when walking through the house was that the pictures we had seen at the time did not do the house justice. We were greatly impressed on our initial walkthrough and went on to have a wonderful week's stay. We were three households staying together as one and found it easy to have our own space at some moments and have family gatherings at others. We would surely stay there again. There were occasions of overzealous mosquitos around the general property, but we had no difficulty sitting on the deck on practically every day of our stay for lunch, happy hour or grilling. Also had no trouble sitting by the fire pit one evening.

Great location, newly renovated and clean

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house for a large family or in our case, two families sharing a house. The house was very clean and modern and had been recently renovated. The bathrooms had special features like underwater speakers and spa jets in the showers. The beds were adjustable for firmness and we were very happy with them. There was a play tent and art materials for kids, which was nice. There was a bowl of eggs for us and Teva told us to help ourselves to the garden, which we did. He met us on the property and was very welcoming.

The house is very close to town and there is also a skate park close by. The only blemish was that we apparently arrived just in time to experience several million mosquitoes which were more than happy to have us as their buffet. The windows were well screened, so the mosquitos that entered were the ones that slipped through open doors. Teva did spray something nontoxic and had big spray and citronella at our disposal. I'm not sure if the mosquitoes are always that bad in late August in the Berkshires or if we were just unlucky.

Regardless, we had a great time!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the positive review. We are thrilled that you had a great time! Unfortunately, due in part to the 2nd wettest July on record mosquitos were out. We have been in touch with a mosquito control officer who will take care of our property. Additionally, we will continue to provide bug spray, and other mosquito deterrents. Thanks Again, Teva

Such a wonderful house to vacation in. The pictures of the house don't do it justice. It's so incredibly beautiful. The sleek, modern look so relaxing to be around. The house was spotless when we arrived. It very comfortably fit the 12 in my family. The owners really went all out w quality of mattresses, pillows, comforters and towels-they were all so comfy. We all really felt pampered there. The furniture was all so pretty and great quality. Teva and Peter were super friendly and welcoming. We were shocked to walk in and see a nice plate of cheeses and champagne! It was just so sweet of them and so nice to eat after a long drive. They had a wonderful array of (food) seasonings, which was so nice to not have to go out and buy. He also went through. the trouble of cutting fresh flowers for us, which was so nice. They also had a great selection of board games, markers for the kids and soccer/footballs for outside. Having netflix was also so nice for everyone to watch movies at night. The house was about a 2 minute drive into town, which was so convenient. My family hopes to have the chance to once again visit Stockbridge and stay at this house.

History of Stockbridge:

Stockbridge was first settled by English missionaries in 1734. The town has a tradition as an art colony. The sculptor Daniel Chester French lived and worked at his home and studio called Chesterwood. Norman Rockwell painted many of his works in Stockbridge, home to the Norman Rockwell Museum. James Taylor lived and sang about Stockbridge in his song sweet baby James.

On the border of the Province of Massachusetts Bay there lies a gentle valley indented by low, wooded mountains, each of a contour strikingly unlike its neighbor. The river of this 'Happy Valley' hesitates and lingers on the edge of that luminous, green bowl of forest and meadow, mean- while changes her accustomed dancing, vivacious step, and walks serenely in a curved path west and north across the lovely plain of Stockbridge, tracing a double, willow- fringed ox-bow, on which the birch canoe must travel five times as far as the horseman who rides from bridge to bridge.

This Taconic-Hoosac bowl in which Stockbridge lies was a home of the Mohekanew or Muh-he-ka-nuk, the people of the continually flowing waters, who, in past unknown suns, ranged far northwest. Here 'mid the softer hills of the Green Mountain range the tube told the hours of the day by mountain shadows, the sundial of the savage. Wnau-ti-kook is the first to become wrapped in shade as the sun falls below her summit. Above Rattlesnake or Deowkook- Hill of the Wolves- stands the north star, their compass of the night, whilst Orion served as their clock. Captain Konkapot's name for Rattlesnake Mountain was Mau-ska-fee-haunk when he indicated the north boundary of the tribe's lands of 'Housatonack [1] -allias Westonhook' - deeded to the whites ' in consideration of Four Hundred and Sixty Pounds, Three barrels of Sider and thirty quarts of Rum. ' The north line of Westenhook patent probably ran within half a league of the enchanting wild-wood park on Mr. Daniel French's estate at Glendale.
