OVERLOOKING ITS OWN ORCHARD WITH SWEEPING COASTLINE AND OCEAN VIEWS

Pahoa Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4 Air Conditioned By Our Trade Winds

This custom-built one bedroom, one bath home sits above a 6 acre macadamia nut orchard with views of the Puna coastline from its living room, kitchen, bedroom, and expansive lanai. Days begin with sunrise over the Pacific as the house faces due east. Your weather forecasting skills will improve as what's in store can usually be seen making its way from ocean to shore. The house is surrounded by a selection of tropical plans, palms, bamboo, and citrus trees, along with a vegetable and herb garden. Guests are always welcome to sample the produce that's in season during your stay.

The Farm House comfortably accommodates up to four guests with a queen-sized bed in the bedroom and a queen-sized sofa bed in the living room. The kitchen is fully equipped with cookward, utensil and dish sets, a microwave, mini-prep and blender. The dining table seats four to six as does the teak table and chairs on the lanai. Your living area is on the second level with the ground level for parking, a tool/utility room, outdoor shower, and cinder star-viewing terrace. With a number of stairs to enter the house from either of two staircases, this property is not well suited to guests with mobility concerns. An on-property caretaker is available during your stay to answer questions about local attractions or provide other assistance.

The MacNut Farm House is off the grid in a primarily agricultural area of the Puna District, 45 minutes to the south and east of Hilo. The house is located up a gated private road surrounded by properties of 5 to 20 or more acres in size. Though there is no telephone landline at the house many cell services work fine and WiFi access is provided. You'll have privacy but not isolation since groceries, banking, and even a Long's Drugs are just 5 miles away in the town of Pahoa. At the Farm House you can experience the land, sea, and sky without leaving its living room and lanai, or while walking through the orchard. Trade winds bring us some of the cleanest air in the world as the only land mass to the south of us is Antartica!

About Michael Graves

I live and work in San Francisco with my husband of 28 years, Don, who is retired. We both grew up on the East Coast (Maryland and New Jersey) but have been in California since the 70's. We are also both trained as psychologists but never spend time analyzing people when not at work! He has two children, four grand kids, and two great-grand children at last count. I guess that makes me a step-great grand dad. Yikes! We travel to Hawaii several times each year when other commitments permit.

Michael Graves purchased this farmhouse in 2005

Why Michael Graves chose Pahoa

Don had traveled to Puna for many years to conduct workshops at the Kalani Retreat Center. He was always charmed by the pristine nature of the area in contrast to resort settings so typical in much of Hawaii. Close friends also in love with Puna bought land in the Pohoiki area. We followed there lead and were lucky to find 6+ acres of abandoned macadamia nut orchard just across Pohoiki from them. Our first encampment was a nylon tarp, table and plastic chairs. After spending time on the undeveloped land we picked a site and drew up plans which were realized in the completion of our MacNut Farm House in 2007. The 'farm' has provided us with a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of life in San Francisco. We are excited by this opportunity to share life on the farm with those curious about a different experience of Hawaii.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The concept for the house was created by Don using some elements of our favorite condo on Maui. Both the living and bed rooms have sliding glass doors that open directly onto the expansive lanai with views of the orchard, coastline and ocean. A 'pocket' lanai permits passage from the bedroom to the bathroom or vice versa. In addition to the sliders there are eight other windows throughout the house offering views from almost every where you stand. These windows also allow us to manage the 'air conditioning' provided by the trade winds off the Pacific. Believe it or not in winter months they are often closed and we might even use the free standing gas stove to warm the place up!

The living areas are all on the second floor of the Farm House with the ground level used for parking, the utility room, and an outdoor shower. Two staircases provide access through the front door into the kitchen and to the lanai that runs across the orchard side of the house. There is also a cinder terrace which is a good spot from which to view the Milky Way visible on clear nights from the property. The ocean is also visible from throughout the orchard should you want to explore amongst the 500 macadamia nut trees.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful place to stay! The views were spectacular and the personal touches like fresh flowers were very welcoming. The house is the perfect size for a couple and sits on a secluded plot of land with beautiful landscaping. We woke up every morning with the amazing songs of jungle birds and the cool trade winds blowing in off the ocean. We ate every meal on the deck that looks east to the Pacific. Although we never really felt the need to leave the property, on Sundays there is a great farmer's market just outside of Pahoa town. Thanks and aloha to the hosts!

Beauty and comfort in the heart of Pohoiki

  • 5 of 5
The property and farmhouse were the perfect respite for our family of four for the Memorial Day long weekend. The bedroom, living area, kitchen, and lanai were beautiful and comfortable at the same time. The house was well stocked with everything we needed during our stay. The ocean and farm view was gorgeous and we enjoyed spending a lot of time on the lanai eating meals, playing games, and relaxing. Our kids enjoyed exploring the yard and were thrilled to pick fruit from the fruit trees for breakfast.

The caretaker on the property made sure the house was ready for us and the bedding was turned down when we arrived late at night. We even had a beautiful tropical flower arrangement in each room! He checked in on us the next day and then gave us plenty of privacy for the rest of the weekend. He had great recommendations of places to check out while we were in town.

The property is minutes away from the ocean and close to town of Pahoa. We enjoyed going to the beach, warm ponds, Maku'u market, and cruising in downtown Pahoa.

We would highly recommend this property to anyone who wants a secluded getaway!

The MacNut Farm House is 1 1/2 miles from Lava Tree Park where one can see how lava formed as it cooled. Driving down Pohoiki Road through one of the island's oldest Mango groves brings you to the Isaac Hale Beach Park and boat ramp. During lava flows, boat tours leave several times a day for a ride south to see lava meeting the Pacific. For the experienced, boogey boarding or surfing is popular. Or you can just cool off with a jump into the water off the ramp! A five minute drive north along the coastline brings you to the Ahalanui warm pond. There is easy staired access to the pond which is a blend of heated spring and ocean waters.

Making the one hour drive to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is well worth the time. Do plan to spend several hours as there is plenty to see on foot or while driving down Chain of Craters Road and around the Kilauea caldera.

The town of Pahoa, five miles from our location, offers its own rustic charms with several restaurants, two banks, used book store, sports bar, drug, hardware and grocery stores. Every Sunday there is also a farmer's market.

Puna has several such markets in locations no more than 15-20 minutes from the Farm House. If you want to sample to local fare along with Hawaiian music, a trip to Uncle Robert's on Wednesday evenings is a must!
