About Stephen Gates

Family of four, Steve an attorney and business owner, Perihan owns her own business as well and two sons, Aydin (15) and Koray (12).

Stephen Gates purchased this house in 2006

Why Stephen Gates chose Taos

We were simply awestruck by the beauty seen from the homesite. When the agent took us up there and we stepped out of the car, our first thought was OMG, which I said out loud, probably costing us another $10K. We've never been in a place with such varied and magnificent views and with sunsets and rainbows like we've never known. They call NM the land of enchantment and being up on this mountainside looking down to the valley below and mountains around us is exactly what the brochures claim, as hard as that may be to believe. Enchanting is the correct word.

What makes this house unique

Odd as it may sound, we have a lot of birds here even though it's a dryer kind of forest (pinon and juniper) with some sagebrush. We do have a water feature, an orchard and some special plantings for birds, so we end up with nesting Mountain Bluebirds, Towhees, Hummingbirds and a wide variety of other birds large and small. Our floor to ceiling windows in the dining room give a real birds-eye view (sorry, couldn't help myself) of their shenanigans.

Best Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5
This is a hoise I would highly recommend to those heading to Taos. The house is about 6 miles South of Taos - close enough to be in Taos in 10 minutes but out far enough to have great views and spectacular sunsets! We spent mornings and late afternoons outside just taking in the scenery. We really enjoyed the Hummingbirds and rabbits..

The house is situated ideally for day trips, having great access to the major highways. The owner is extrememly accommodating as well!

The house is set up with several rooms ideal for reading while enjoying the scenery outdoors. There are books and DVD's for everyone and the kitchen is great with all the necessities.

If you're coming to Taos, this is the house for you!

birds and cottontail rabbits and other occasional visitors

  • 5 of 5
It was what I wanted- close to the city but private and wild. Lots of birds, funny cottontail rabbits, some more daring than others, almost complete silence (except for the birds and an occasional distant barking dog). One can see for miles and miles, and the changing colors of sunrises and sunsets are a spectacle to watch. My only complaint (addressed to myself)- it was so relaxing and peaceful to be in the garden around the house that I gave up on half of my sightseeing/hiking plans.

House buying trip

  • 5 of 5
This house is very nice and has fantastic views {they were enjoyed by all of us}. We found the the house was really equipped with everything you needed to cook at home and have family meals that we could enjoy when we wanted. The fire pit was really nice on the cool nights to do some star gazing. It is very close to Hot Springs and a short drive to Taos. I really enjoyed watching the humming birds at the feeder they almost landed on my finger. Thanks for sharing your home with us Randy & Diane

Great house, incredible views.

  • 5 of 5
Our family of three plus photographer brother stayed here for 10 days in late July. We had a great stay. The house was beautiful, spacious, well furnished and well decorated in a comfortable southwest style. The beds were extremely comfortable. Loved the birds. Bought and left a hummingbird feeder outside the sun room. The hummers kept us entertained daily. Almost every night we sat outside and watch spectacular lightning storms off in the distance. But it rarely actually rained. The house is outside of town, but just a few minute easy drive to the center of Taos. Lots of great restaurants. Especially loved the old Rancho de Taos Plaza Grill. The best red chili sauce we found. Be sure to funyak the Rio Grande Gorge. Taos was smaller than we expected, but charming and friendly. The surrounding area has great hikes and history. After leaving Taos we spent a day in Bandolier National Monument, another in Chaco Canyon, and a third at Acoma Pueblo. I highly recommend all three. My only suggestion as far as the rental house is concerned is the addition of ceiling fans. It was really hot during the day, and even at night the house stayed warm. Ceiling fans would be icing on the cake. Thanks, Stephen, for sharing your great spot with us. We hope to return one day.
