About Simon Locke
My name is Simon and I run my own communications business. I returned to the U.S. in 2006 after 10 years in Asia where I met my wife. As someone who grew up in the U.K., I have always had a deep appreciation for historic homes. Over the last eight years, we have worked to maintain and open up the land around the house. I am a big gardener, so visitors will likely be the beneficiaries of home grown vegetables.
Simon Locke purchased this house in 2005
Why Simon Locke chose Hudson
Twenty-five years ago I rented a home with friends in near by Claverack and fell in love with the area. When I was looking to purchase a home, we found the house and fell in love with it. It's been a labor of love ever since.
There was also a very pragmatic reason for choosing the area - it's very convenient to get to from New York. Door-to-door its a 2 hr drive from the center of Manhattan and most importantly, there is almost never any traffic on the Sawmill and Taconic Parkways.
The train is also very convenient. Hudson's station is about 7 minutes (by car) from the house. If you want, it is possible to take a Taxi from the station to the house and not have a car (if you are willing to walk and bike).
It is also very convenient for food shopping with a supermarket within walking distance.
What makes this house unique
It is rare for a historic home to be set back from roads and to be as original as The Hart-MacGiffert House. Since the house was once a farm house, it is approximately 300 yards from the nearest road ensuring peace and quiet, yet it is also minutes from Hudson. It offers the best of both worlds.
Backing onto 1000+ acres of protected land means that the house is a mecca for wildlife and deer in particular. We can also walk out of the house onto long trails suitable for walking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing.
