Overview

Hudson House Rental Photos and Description

This Elegant Historic Home Is A Peaceful Retreat With A Swimming Pond.

The Hart-MacGiffert House is a three bedroom pristine historic home on 35 open and wooded acres minutes from central Hudson. If was a featured home on a recent historic home tour. http://www.historichudson.org/HHTour2009.pdf.

Furnished with antiques, with working fireplaces, a lovely kitchen, dinning room and living rooms, the house is an elegant relaxing home away from home. In addition to its many historic details, the house offers contemporary living amenities including High Speed Internet (WiFi), HiFi, flat screen TVs in living room and Bedroom one, and a new washer/dryer.

The home, which is accessed by a long private drive, backs on to the 1000+ acre Greenport Conservation areas with trails to the Hudson.

The property offers opportunities for walking, mountain biking and summer swimming and kayaking in the 2/3 of an acre pond. With a neighboring town park, walk to Friday evening summer concerts or visit Hudson or the Catskills.

The marble-tiled bathrooms and bedrooms (two with Queen/Full sized beds and one with two singles) are beautifully decorated.

Enjoy cherry blossoms in the spring, fireflies in June, cool swimming in the summer, the leaves changing in the fall, and cross-country skiing in the winter. With central heating and cooling the house offers all season comfort.

We rent the home for a limited number of weekends during the year. If you are genuinely interested in the house and have read the description, please reach out to us.

Since I have limited time, please do not include the house as part of multiple location requests. We respond within 24 hours. We require a minimum of two weeks advance notice for bookings.

This is a family house, suitable for a family or two couples. It is not for shares or events.

We do not accept pets.

Please note: We are a strictly no shoes (we provide slippers), no smoking house and property. While the house will be thoroughly cleaned prior to guests arriving, we have cats, so if you are allergic this may be a consideration. About Simon Locke

My name is Simon and I run my own communications business. I returned to the U.S. in 2006 after 10 years in Asia where I met my wife. As someone who grew up in the U.K., I have always had a deep appreciation for historic homes. Over the last eight years, we have worked to maintain and open up the land around the house. I am a big gardener, so visitors will likely be the beneficiaries of home grown vegetables.

Simon Locke purchased this house in 2005

Why Simon Locke chose Hudson

Twenty-five years ago I rented a home with friends in near by Claverack and fell in love with the area. When I was looking to purchase a home, we found the house and fell in love with it. It's been a labor of love ever since.

There was also a very pragmatic reason for choosing the area - it's very convenient to get to from New York. Door-to-door its a 2 hr drive from the center of Manhattan and most importantly, there is almost never any traffic on the Sawmill and Taconic Parkways.

The train is also very convenient. Hudson's station is about 7 minutes (by car) from the house. If you want, it is possible to take a Taxi from the station to the house and not have a car (if you are willing to walk and bike).

It is also very convenient for food shopping with a supermarket within walking distance.

What makes this house unique

It is rare for a historic home to be set back from roads and to be as original as The Hart-MacGiffert House. Since the house was once a farm house, it is approximately 300 yards from the nearest road ensuring peace and quiet, yet it is also minutes from Hudson. It offers the best of both worlds.

Backing onto 1000+ acres of protected land means that the house is a mecca for wildlife and deer in particular. We can also walk out of the house onto long trails suitable for walking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing.

Can't Rave Enough!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this home for his family that was traveling in from Georgia, Alabama and Arizona. The house is beautiful with a lot of history and the grounds are gorgeous. It is so quiet that you forget you are in Hudson, NY. The owners were super helpful throughout the whole process of booking and touring the property and even went so far as to leave a Welcome/Thank You note for our family upon their very late night arrival. There is even a path that will take you to the banks of the Hudson on the property. If visiting the Hudson, NY area, look to stay here. It was perfect. Thank you again Simon & Rika!
