La Mariposa is a lovely modernized apartment in the old part of town, in a quiet street near the Plaza de España (2 min walking distance), the most picturesque plaza of Vejer. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants nearby. Overlooking the garden, La Mariposa has a large private terrace with stunning views of the countryside; it is the perfect holiday place for a family of two or three, four if this is a small child. Parking is nearby, which is a rare luxury in Vejer. Andalusia, where the sun shines more than 300 days a year, is probably the most diverse province of Spain. In the virtually unexplored south-west of this province lays Vejer de la Frontera, a stunning pueblo blanco, rich in authentic culture and natural beauty. The old town presents inspiring historical sites, picturesque patios and balconies amongst the cobbled alleyways, as well as numerous inviting bars and restaurants. The house of which the apartment 'La Mariposa' is part of is built against the mountain, hence the magnificient views over the plains of La Janda. Sitting on the terrace one is on eye level with the majestic birds of prey sailing through the sky while many other birds are daily guests in the garden. The apartment can be reached by two steep stairs, either by going up or down from the different levels. Although the location of 'La Mariposa' gives a suburbian feeling in reality it is only a few minutes walking to the center of town with shops, restaurants and many terraces.

Notes: The historic apartment 'La Mariposa' has been built half into the mountain and is therefor only accessible via stairs, either descending from the top or ascending from the bottom. Usually one can find parking space near the bottom of the stairs. Guests with walking difficulties are dis-encouraged to consider to rent this apartment, or even Vejer de la Frontera, as this town with its steep streets and many staircases is difficult to navigate for disabled persons.

I stayed in the Mariposa for six weeks in February and March 2009. The summer feel of Vejer de la Frontera is probably very different to the wintertime but a had a wonderful break there. The apartment was lovely, small but well-contained. I would think this perfect for a couple - more might be a little overcrowded - particularly with children. The stairs to the apartment are formidably steep - so no-one infirm should attempt to stay here. I would certainly recommend the apartment, great views, though northfacing - which made it rather cold in the wintere but probably welcome in the summer. I loved Vejer de la Frontera and hope that I can revist again. Wonderful base for Gibralter, Cadis, Seville and Jerez - parking was a bit of a problem in the winter though so I rarely moved my car - might be more of a problem in the summer.

I had great service from the owner and her agent in Vejer.

We really enjoyed our stay at La Mariposa. Our stay was very comfortable,clean and well-maintained . We were made very welcome by the lady who passed the key to us. The kitchen was well-equipped and the bedroom was well furnished. Only just about enough room for the camp-bed in the living for our son. The views fom the balcony are spectacular and a great place to have leisurely breakfasts. The appartment stayed reasonably cool throughout the day due to its aspect. Great place to explore the surrounding area from by car but parking is a bit competitive outside at the top of the steps. Best to park below in the car park along the road to avoid parking tickets form vigilant traffic wardens!

Our 2009 stay in la Mariposa

We spent 2 weeks there in July. The appartment is simple but has everything you need for such a holiday. It has a super terrace which is large and shaded in the afternoon. We cooked our dinners almost every day and enjoyed the calm of this place The view on the valley to the north is beautiful. Is is only 5 minutes walk from the center of old Vejer, with very convenient shops for all your needs, including fresh fish, as well as bars and restaurants. For us the location of Vejer is convenient, and with a rental car we could move easily between the beaches, the windsurf spots and the golf courses.
