About meal...: Upon request, it is possible to prepared Tuscany dishes, carefully cooked by Lady Mina. The dishes are those of the ancient Tuscan tradition such as Pappa al Pomodoro (a soup-like dish prepared with bread and tomatoes), Ribollita (a potpourri of local vegetables and bread, simmered for hours and hours), and Tripe with tomato sauce (a very typical Florentine dish).

The History: For the past few centuries, The Rustico della Certosa was a simple building created to welcome peasants working on the surrounding hills. During the 1980's the house was completely renovated, paying close attention not to remove or alter those unique elements that call to mind its rustic past (the big fireplace in the middle of the dining room, the ancient exposed wood beams, the original cotto floors from Impruneta).

Golf: There is Golf Club near the house. The distance form the house is 12 Kms. Great Place to Stay

Mito Houston, Texas, U.S.
Review Submitted: July 5, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
The owners of the property were very accommodating. Lovely surroundings, very clean and not far from the city center. 15 to 20 minutes by car. I slept like a baby at night. My parents were with us and they had no complaints except for the stairs in the entryway my 89 year old Dad had to negotiate. Driving up the narrow road to the property was a little spooky at first but I got used to it quickly. Let's just say it added to the experience.

I may have to send them a french press coffee-maker though. I'm very particular about my coffee and their selection of coffee-makers is a little exotic.

We didn't have the bed and breakfast treatment as we weren't in the high season so If you are planning to cook your meals you may need to drive down to the convenience store for groceries. There don't seem to be any supermarkets near the villa. There is a great fruit stand nearby and pastry shops not to far from the property. 10 minute drive to the stores. There are great restaurants in the area.

An ancient plaque on the house next door says it was Michelangelo's teacher Domenico Ghirlandaio's place. I never got to ask the owner if that was true so assume it was.

All-in-all it was a great stay and I hope to do it again real soon.
Owner's Response: Yes, It's true! The house is close to the villa of the teacher of Michelangelo: Domenico Ghirlandaio.

Wish we'd stayed longer!

DebLA Los Angeles, CA
Review Submitted: August 14, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
I chose to stay here, because a friend lived nearby, and I was very happy we did. Like the review above mine, I also have an older parent (79.) We stayed in the smaller 1st floor apartment, and there are 4 or 5 stone steps from the "main" road entrance, but we could drive up to the door when needed, and my mom could handle the steps with my help. It was one of only two places we stayed in Italy that were fairly easy access for an older person; there are stairs everywhere in Italy, and it was difficult for my mom, so it was _very_ nice for her here. If someone were confined to a wheelchair, you might have trouble negotiating the driveway in a car at night to get dropped off.

The apartment was very clean, and we had a very pleasant experience. We dealt with Alessandro and Enrico, both very responsive and helpful. We stayed four days, and I wish we had stayed a bit longer, as there is so much to see in the area. This was mother's first time in Italy, and she loved this part of the trip.

One nice thing about this location is that it seems like you are out in the country, but you are still very close to Florence. Step onto the road in front of the house and you can see the Duomo in the distance across the vineyards. We drove around a lot, and if you haven't driven in Italy, be prepared. There are benefits to being way far out in the countryside, but if you plan on visiting Florence, it's very nice to be so close and not have to drive a long way on the country roads at night. You can also get a bus into Florence, which we didn't do given my mom's mobility issues.

It's lovely and very peaceful. The the apartment we were in was on the bottom floor; there is a much larger space above. There was a family with 6 or 7 children staying there while we were, and we barely heard them. (We did not stay during the B&B Season, so one family had the whole upper floor.)

Also - re directions & shopping - we found it easier to come up & down the road via Tavarnuzze rather than try and make a left toward Florence near the Certosa. That was a tip from my local friend! Distance seemed to be the same. We shopped for food in Impruneta at the CoOp, although I'm sure there are closer places.

Note - we bought dish soap, etc., but we didn't really need to; might want to bring some toilet paper and plastic bags for trash; if you're coming from the US states, pack a few zip loc bags, they'll come in handy everywhere.
