Au Pin is a secluded and peaceful retreat set in 4 hectares of old oak forest and meadow, near Bordeaux. The renovations are simple, preserving the original features of wood and stone that we loved from the outset. This is rustic charm at it’s best. The three downstairs bedrooms have doors to the surrounding garden.

The well equipped large modern kitchen spills out onto the extensive terrace through a multitude of glass doors and overlooks the garden and pool. The dining table is from an old monastery and seats 12 easily.

Indoor- outdoor living is a part of life here but if it’s too hot there is air-conditioning in the main kitchen dining area.

The bathrooms are spacious and new.

The pool is 5x10 meters and 2 meters deep. The shallow end is deliberately shallow enough for the average 3 year old to be able to stand up. For the more adventurous, we can request a visit to the ‘Palombiere’ in the forest by the house-a 30 meters high, 100 year old ‘tree house' for hunters.

Au Pin is a few miles away from the main auto route to Bordeaux and the beaches of Arcachon.

The sleepy Landaise town of Casteljaloux is 15 km: an old fashioned French holiday resort with a sailing, pedalo and swimming lake, golf course, branch course for ages 2-92, cafe overlooking the lake which serves basic but tasty meals .Basque fiestas abound in the months of July and August and the outrageously acrobatic 'Course Landaise' is a must see 'spectacle' for the uninitiated. The local glacier makes it's own delicious ice cream and for the world weary the spa has a range of pools and Turkish Baths.

Marmande is 10kms in the opposite direction. The cathedral is worth a visit and there is a beautiful walk , beach (with cafe and restaurant) and skate park on the banks of the river Garonne. The TGV stops here.

Both are market towns.

There is an excellent equestrian center nearby.

The cycle path along the canal Latteral is 10 minutes by bike.

Bordeaux, Bergerac and St Emilion vineyards are all within an hour.

Other Activities: wine tasting, canal boating and swimming.

Golf: The golf course is ten minutes drive away in Casteljaloux.

  • Both bathrooms have under floor heating. One has a heated towel rail and a large walk in shower which is separate from the large bath. The other bathroom is en suite and has a sink, toilet and bath. There is a laundry room with a 3rd toilet and sink, which is less private but very handy for young kids. The laundry and bathrooms are completely new and very user friendly and comfortable! There is an ample supply of hot water.

  • There are 5 bedrooms: 3 downstairs have doors to the garden. The sitting room has a wood burning fireplace. All the downstairs bedroom windows have shutters. Two double beds are made up of 2 singles pushed together with a special mattress cover over them . This is very effective and can be better than a normal double. (no sinking into the middle of the bed and plenty of space for kids) The bedding arrangements are fairly flexible-let us know what you need.

Wheelchair access possible if two sets of 3/4 steps manageable. A ramp links the main entrance to the car park. There are low sills between indoors and outdoors for water protection. There is good mobile phone reception and internet access. Linen including towels is provided for an extra fee. This house is cool in the summer with very effective air conditioning and it is very cozy and warm in the winter with extensive underfloor heating powered by geothermic. It also has two open fireplaces.
