Akumal Mexico's 'Casa Caribbean' is a spacious waterfront penthouse condo in a private location on Half Moon Bay overlooking a white sand beach and the azure Caribbean on Mexico's Mayan Riviera.
* Snorkeling in Half-Moon Bay's own magical coral reef right in front of the apartment
* Short walk to wonderful Snorkeling at renowned Yal-Ku Lagoon
* Minutes from Akumal's dive shops, restaurants, grocery stores, craft boutiques, and ecological center dedicated to preserving the area's beauty and native Mayan culture
Driving Tips: It is about an hour drive south of Cancun. The roads have improved with overpasses in Playa del Carmen but be careful to obey the speed limit… if not you will be stopped.
• To get to Akumal entrance you drive past the pedestrian overpass, stay in the left lane, you will take a u-turn to go back to the entrance a short distance on the right.
The local store in town (Super Chomak) is expensive so if you want to buy groceries stop at Chedraui on your right between Playa del Carmen and Akumal… across fromPuerto Aventuras.
We also like Soriana in Centro Maya mall just past Sam's Club in Playa del Carmen (on your right) but it is more difficult to get to…you have to get off the road, turn around and go back to turn into the mall.
There is a farmer's market on saturdays across from Chomak (and maybe wednesdays also).
Restaurants: we love La Lunita right next to the condo…(our guests get 15% discounts)... they will even deliver dinner for dinner on the terrace. La Lunita is open for lunch and dinner offering indoor or beach seating with tables on the sand or their wooden deck on the beach. It is a great place to dine under the moonlight, quite romantic! La Lunita specializes in classic Mexican cuisine and seafood. http://www.lalunita-akumal.com
La Buena Vida is good…and fun (swings at the bar and a treehouse)… a short walk from condo.
Lol-Ha has a palapa style beach bar with open air tables under roof and pizza at Lol-Ha Pizzeria.
Main beach Akumal Bay to right of the arch.
Lonchería… inexpensive local place. Local Mexican dishes, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Location: next to Chomack grocery store.
Turtle Bay Cafe & Bakery bakes its own breads, cakes, cookies. Good hearty breakfasts (American and Mexican food).
Location: Located in central Akumal across from Akumal Bay
La Cueva del Pescador
The restaurant has a sand floor, interior and exterior seating, good fish. Can get buggy if there is not a breeze. It's located next to Turtle Bay.
If you like snorkeling go straight out about 200 yards from the condo to the dark area which is all coral and beautiful. If it is windy you may wish to snorkel at Akumal Bay where the reef is not as nice but it is less windy. Half Moon Bay where we are has a beautiful sand beach but you may wish to wear water shoes because the sand ends where the water begins. At Akumal Bay the sand goes way out so no water shoes are needed.
Yal-Ku Lagoon is quite near Casa Caribbean (you could walk)… and wonderful….
Yal-ku Lagoon is wonderful for both adults and children. There are no ocean waves. There are several easy entry stairs with railing into the lagoon. Easy, gentle slow paced snorkeling. Great variety of gorgeous fish that are not intimidated by humans. Entry into the lagoon is by jumping off a rocky ledge, or using stairs to enter in approximately 6-7 feet deep water. Take caution when bringing younger children who are not comfortable if they can’t touh the bottom or enter by walking in from land.
Admission is $9.00 U.S.A. or 95 pesos. Limited palapa rentals are $20US for the day if you would like an area with seating, shade and privacy. Alcoholic beverages are not welcome at the lagoon. Buy their biodegradable sunscreen or bring biodegradable that you’ve purchased elsewhere. Wear a t-shirt -- even on an overcast day you can really get a sunburn. There are eco-friendly elevated pit toilets and an outside shower. Definitely bring an underwater camera. Fabulous place to spend all or part of a day. There is a snack bar. Open 8 - 5:30 daily.
We love Paraiso Beach in Tulum which is a wide and long beach that goes from the Tulum ruins to probably a mile south of the ruins. It has to be one of the most beautiful white coral beaches in the world. It is not a snorkeling beach but great for a swim and a Margarita.
There are extra beach towels in the chest in master bedroom. Ask the maids if you need more. Roberto is a great resource…very helpful…so ask him about anything I might have missed.
While you might not want to leave the tranquility of Casa Caribbean, adventures await! Hike through Xcaret Eco-park, scuba dive in nearby caves (cenotes), golf at Puerto Aventura or shop in Playa del Carmen or other exciting locations just north of Akumal. Or, head south and explore the Mayan ruins of Tulum or of our favorite place, Coba.
