THE PUMP HOUSE - COSY FARM COTTAGE WITH FISHING AND GOLF NEARBY

County Kildare Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, kitchen/living area. Sleeps 4.

The Pump House is a traditional style cottage, which overlooks a beautiful Victorian lawn with native and exotic trees to the front, and a cobblestone yard to the back. The cottage is tastefully decorated throughout, bright and spacious, with the guests' comfort and enjoyment in mind. It has central heating and a solid fuel stove (logs are provided free of charge) as well as a range of extra complimentary amenities. It is located next to our 18th century house, in the middle of 35 acres of farmland dotted with ancient trees, shrubberies, and a wide variety of wildlife and domestic animals-yet only 20 minutes walk from the historic town of Athy. The Barrow runs adjacent to it and is ideal for coarse fishing or bird watching. We pride ourselves on the gentle hospitality we provide our guests and look forward to welcoming you soon!

About Athy: - a heritage town in south Kildare, situated on the intersection of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal. The town developed from a 12th century Anglo-Norman settlement and has many beautiful landmark monuments. The Heritage Centre, situated in the main town square, provides a wealth of information to all visitors and doubles as a local history museum. There are several important festivals in Athy throughout the year, namely the Water Festival (May), Gordon Bennett Vintage Motor Rally (June), the Kildare Agricultural Show and Athy Bluegrass Festival (July) and the Ernest Shackleton Autumn School (October). Tuesdays are market day in Athy and every Sunday there is also a picturesque Farmers Market in the main town square, with locally grown produce and crafts on sale. There is also a number of quality restaurants in the town, as well as traditional Irish pubs and a good selection of shops.

Activities on our farm: FISHING/ROWING - The Barrow runs adjacent to our farm and offers fishing enthusiasts enjoyment all year round, with plenty of pike, bream and roach available. Guests can enjoy our picnic hampers on the river bank! FAUNA AND FLORA - ours is a visitor friendly farm and guests are welcome to roam through the fields and enjoy the countryside at close hand. There are many beautiful old trees dotted through the farm and a wide variety of wildlife and domestic animals to be seen: pheasants, rabbits, hares, hens, ducks, cows, a horse and a donkey. And while you're at it, don't forget to close your eyes and enjoy the magnificent bird song, particularly if you didn't get up to hear the Dawn Chorus at day break..

Other local activities: All of these and many more are available either in Athy or within a short distance drive: GOLF - see details below. FISHING - the River Barrow and the Grand Canal offer fishing enthusiasts enjoyment all year round, with plenty of pike, bream and roach available. There are also trout fishing lakes nearby. HORSE RACING -The Curragh, Naas and Punchestown are the nearest racecourses and host monthly meetings. GREYHOUND RACING - a cheaper and exciting alternative to horse racing. Races take place in Newbridge every Friday and Saturday night. MOTOR RACING - for 'would-be Schumachers' at Mondello Park Racing Circuit. PAINT BALLING - a fun filled experience you'll never forget! Available in Stradbally. SOMETHING WE DIDN'T MENTION? If there is any other activity that you are particularly interested in, just ask and we will be happy to make enquiries for you!

MISSING YOU ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5
Just got back from a wonderful stay at "The Pump House" A Big Thank You to Claudia, James and their family and pets for providing us with a warm welcome, a most comfortable base in an idyllic setting.
This cottage is quaint but with every modern convenience that you could ask for and more.
We especially loved the wood burning stove which gave our evenings that warm fuzzy feeling.
Thank you also for the delicious home made scones and jam you provided for us on our arrival ( must get the recipe )
We will be back soon,
Jacquie & Mike Berkshire

PEACEFUL COTTAGE

  • 4 of 5
The cottage was well-equipped and peaceful as described in the property details. Lovely bathroom and comfy bed.
Athy itself was in a good central position for visitting tourist attractions in the area but was itself a bit run down and the walk as described into Athy along the river from the cottage was not quite as we expected leading as it did thro' the back of a large housing estate.
The fishing did not prove to be as good as expected either- swims inaccessible etc but this may have been because it was too late in the season. (1st week in Sept)
People were friendly everywhere and we enjoyed several reasonable and genorous meals in local cafes.
We felt the owners could have provided more local information - for example an OS map of the area would have been very useful especially for walking.

RETURNING CUSTOMER

Myself, my wife and 2 friends rent the cottage ever year (well the last 3 at least). Claudia and James have the cottage presented beautifully. Its setting is calm and peaceful and very much the way a rural setting should be.
We missed having the donkey outside the door each morning though...
It was also lovely to get a welcoming gift of a lovely bottle of red. I've already booked for 2014.

Owner's Response: It's always a pleasure to welcome back previous guests! Just in case you were worried, Donkey-jote is absolutely fine and healthy! He'd just been temporarily relocated to a different field, so as to keep our pony Rosie company. He is a ladies' man after all!

TRULY HOME AWAY FROM HOME

  • 5 of 5
I had the good fortune to stay at the Pump House for an extended period and it truly became home. From the start, James and Claudia made me feel so welcome. Their hospitality is absolutely first-rate. I enjoyed their company, and that of their children, immensely. They gave me the privacy I craved but were always available if I ever needed anything.
The cottage itself is really lovely. It’s nicely decorated and has everything you need, and then some. It’s light, bright, warm and quiet; the bed is extremely comfortable; and the views outside are wonderful. Best of all is the location. The grounds are the best Ireland has to offer. There are open fields and woods to walk through and the River Barrow to walk along, or fish, or swim. There are horses, a donkey, cows, and chickens to welcome and entertain you, as well as Lucy the dog and Miss Kitty the cat to accompany you on your walks. If you want to go horseback-riding, you can do that too.
However, if it’s town life you crave, Athy – a charming small town with good shops, restaurants, and pubs -- is just a mile away. The historic town of Kildare is slightly farther afield, but also offers first-rate shops et al. And of course the great city of Dublin is less than an hour’s drive or train ride away.
There are also a number of attractions nearby that I can recommend, including Burtown House and Gardens, the Moone High Cross, Newbridge Silverware, the Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens, and St. Brigid’s Well. And if you ever find yourself in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, the parade that Athy holds rivals anything you’ll see in Dublin or New York.
I cried my eyes out when I had to leave the Pump House. I’m counting the days until I can return.

OUR HOLIDAY AT THE PUMP HOUSE

  • 5 of 5
we stayed at the Pump House in August 2012 we were looking for a location where we were able to fish, golf and enjoy an irish drink or two.
The Pump House provided everything we needed and more, it is very well equiped with washing machine dryer and dishwasher. The bedroom is large with a massive I think you would call it an extra extra king size bed which was really comfy.
Having bread, butter milk tea coffee and sugar already at the cottage was really handy and then there were the extras homemade scones and jam on the kitchen table, and fresh roses in the bedroom what lovely touches.
The owners Claudia and James are delightful and make you feel very welcome they encourage you to enjoy the facilities around the cottage and also the surrounding area.
The river is a short walk from the cottage my husband fished most evenings and caught a variety of fish bream, hybrids , dace and lost a couple of pike.
We played golf at Athy a beautiful parkland for 20 euros
at The Heath a heathland course for 18 euros and at Rathsallagh a long parkland course with lakes and streams for 35 euros all courses were within 20 miles of the cottage.
The town of Athy was a 15/20 min lovely walk along the track from the cottage to the road and then along the road by the river into the town centre. There are about 30 pubs in Athy but we loved and kept going back to Clancy's on the main street. Emma behind the bar was very friendly and on Thursdays they have an irish music night when 10 musicians turn up and practice playing together but get there early before 9pm to get a seat as the room they play in is small. We ate at Ngais a chinese restaurant and would reccommend the eat as much as you want buffet which is between 7 - 10pm on Thursdays for 15 euros. We also used Mario's takeaway for pizzas and kebabs they had free delivery if you spend over 5 euros.
This was my first time to Ireland and it was absolutely lovely the cottage the people, and the service we encountered were all fantastic. Will definitely be coming back in the future.
