About Athy: - a heritage town in south Kildare, situated on the intersection of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal. The town developed from a 12th century Anglo-Norman settlement and has many beautiful landmark monuments. The Heritage Centre, situated in the main town square, provides a wealth of information to all visitors and doubles as a local history museum. There are several important festivals in Athy throughout the year, namely the Water Festival (May), Gordon Bennett Vintage Motor Rally (June), the Kildare Agricultural Show and Athy Bluegrass Festival (July) and the Ernest Shackleton Autumn School (October). Tuesdays are market day in Athy and every Sunday there is also a picturesque Farmers Market in the main town square, with locally grown produce and crafts on sale. There is also a number of quality restaurants in the town, as well as traditional Irish pubs and a good selection of shops.

Activities on our farm: FISHING/ROWING - The Barrow runs adjacent to our farm and offers fishing enthusiasts enjoyment all year round, with plenty of pike, bream and roach available. Guests are welcome to use our boat and picnic hampers are available to enjoy on the river bank! HORSERIDING - during their stay horse owners can use our livery stables and enjoy the riding facilities around the farm: a 3 mile track around the fields and shrubberies, natural obstacles to jump and hilly riverbanks provide plenty of interest. FAUNA AND FLORA - ours is a visitor friendly farm and guests are welcome to roam through the fields and enjoy the countryside at close hand. There are many beautiful old trees dotted through the farm and a wide variety of wildlife and domestic animals to be seen: pheasants, rabbits, hares, hens, ducks, cows, a horse and a donkey. And while you're at it, don't forget to close your eyes and enjoy the magnificent bird song, particularly if you didn't get up to hear the Dawn Chorus at day break...

Other local activities: All of these and many more are available either in Athy or within a short distance drive: GOLF - see details below. FISHING - the River Barrow and the Grand Canal offer fishing enthusiasts enjoyment all year round, with plenty of pike, bream and roach available. There are also trout fishing lakes nearby. HORSE RACING -The Curragh, Naas and Punchestown are the nearest racecourses and host monthly meetings. GREYHOUND RACING - a cheaper and exciting alternative to horse racing. Races take place in Newbridge every Friday and Saturday night. MOTOR RACING - for 'would-be Schumachers' at Mondello Park Racing Circuit. PAINT BALLING - a fun filled experience you'll never forget! Available in Stradbally. SOMETHING WE DIDN'T MENTION? If there is any other activity that you are particularly interested in, just ask and we will be happy to make enquiries for you!

Golf: GOLF - three of Ireland's best courses are located within a 30-45 minute drive from our cottage: The K Club (venue for the Ryder Cup 2006 Matches), the PGA National Ireland and Carton House. In the town, Athy Golf Club and Cardenton House Par 3 offer a fair test of golf to all categories of players, while Kilkea Castle Golf Course is a short 10 minute drive away and is well liked for the immaculate condition of its tees and greens.

Just got back from a wonderful stay at "The Pump House" A Big Thank You to Claudia, James and their family and pets for providing us with a warm welcome, a most comfortable base in an idyllic setting.
This cottage is quaint but with every modern convenience that you could ask for and more.
We especially loved the wood burning stove which gave our evenings that warm fuzzy feeling.
Thank you also for the delicious home made scones and jam you provided for us on our arrival ( must get the recipe )
We will be back soon,
Jacquie & Mike Berkshire

A peaceful getaway

A very nice cosy and comfortable little cottage. We managed an all-day visit to Galway and its surrounding areas. There is a very convenient train service to Dublin to avoid the hassle of parking. Athy is a good centre for touring. For racing enthusiasts, The Curragh is only a short drive away. Thanks to Claudia and James for making us so welcome.

Pump house review

Review Submitted: January 14, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
My boyfriend and I stayed at the pump house in December 2008. It was a wonderful stay. The house was very warm and welcoming and Claudia made us feel very at home straight away. The fire made it so cosy and perfect in the cold and rainy december weather and having shops nearby made it so easy to cook in the evening. I only wish we could'v stayed longer.

Great get-away

Tara_and_Joe Oxford, England
Review Submitted: January 8, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
We have been to the Pumphouse twice with every intention of going again. It's such a wonderful hideaway. Everything in the house is of high standards -the bed is the most comfortable I've ever slept in, the bathroom is luxurious and the living room is so cosy. Everything is perfectly decorated and inkeeping with its surrounds. The extra touches such as the bottle of wine and fresh flowers make it extra special.
The location of the cottage is ideal for getting way from it all and we love the farm animals around the place. It's also close to the lovely town of Naas, with good restaurants, pubs and wee farmer's market.
All in all it's a great place to stay and we'll definitely be back.

An Irish Gem

Dick and Mary Jo Grundy Center, IA
Review Submitted: November 11, 2008 Date of Stay: November 2007
We couldn't have asked for a better place to use as a home base in our stay in Ireland. We stayed at the lovely pump house for 3 weeks to celebrate our 40th anniversary. I think you get a real feel for life in Ireland staying in Athy. We visited family that we found in Ireland which was a highlight of our trip.

The pump house was very clean with a comfortable king sized bed. We really felt pampered with the heated tile in the bathroom.

Claudia and James were the perfect hosts; helpful if you have questions yet letting you have all the privacy you want. They have a delightful family and we would very much like to return to meet their new little son.

We would highly recommend the pump house to anyone.
