QUIET STUDIO IN THE HEART OF CHARMING NORTH KOHALA

Kapaau Studio Rental Photos and Description

Welcome to the Lychee Ohana, perfect for a single or couple on vacation or business. There is a very comfortable queen-size bed with good-quality bedding and towels. The well-equipped kitchen allows you to eat in and prepare a home-cooked meal if you wish. There are dishes, pots, pans, eating and cooking utensils, a full-sized refrigerator, gas cooktop, microwave oven, toaster oven, coffee maker and rice cooker. The studio has a full size couch, flat screen tv, cable, and Wi-Fi for your entertainment. Additionally, there is a full size washer and dryer in the unit.

This quiet studio is located in the heart of historic North Kohala. Our property is conveniently situated in between the small towns of Kapaau and Hawi. The Post Office, Bank, convenience store, library and our locally owned grocery store are all an extremely short walk from property.

Kapaau, home of the original King Kamehameha I Statue, is a five-minute walk and has a charming downtown area with great art galleries, yoga studio, coffe shop and several wonderful restaurants. While in town be sure to check out Kamehameha Park, which has two great tennis courts, a public swimming pool, a skate park and wonderful children’s playground. There is even a small public golf course you can play on for a nominal fee.

Hawi, is a 10-15 minute walk or 3 minute drive. It is home to a weekly farmer’s market that we think is one of the best on the island. The town has a great selection of unique shops and tasty restaurants. There are also wonderful alternative healing practices located here, with massage therapists, acupuncture specialists, naturopaths, herbalists, and a variety of yoga styles represented. Hawi is also the bicycle turnaround for the annual Ironman World Championship held every October.

North Kohala is perfectly located to take advantage of many fun activities including scenic coastal rides on horseback or ATVs, the Kohala Zipline, Kayaking the Kohala Ditch and hiking trails galore. Head up the mountain road to Waimea and experience one of the best scenic drives in the US, with incredible views of Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and its observatories and a birds eye view of South Kohala with all its resorts and white sand beaches. The beaches in Kohala are the best on the island, including world famous Hapuna beach, scenic Mauna Kea Beach, child friendly Spencer Beach Park and local favorite Beach 69’s.

Head down the coast towards South Kohala and you’ll discover many historical sites and parks along the coastline to enjoy. Lapakahi State Park is the site of an ancient fishing village and a great spot for snorkeling and whale watching. The harbor town of Kawaihae is home to a variety of tour companies offering scuba, snorkeling and whale watching tours. There’s also a nice selection of shops and galleries along with great dinning and music at the Blue Dolphin Restaurant or popular Café Pesto.

Travelers who come to North Kohala should know that they are forgoing the hot dry heat and touristy areas to be out in the country. Most of North Kohala is very jungle like and therefore includes all animals and critters found in such locations.

Things to See & Do Nearby:

* Hike to the black sand beach in Pololu Valley

* Picnic at Keokea Beach Park

* See Lapakahi Historical Park - a 600-year-old reconstructed Hawaiian fishing village

* Experience Kohala scenery & waterfalls

* Kayak historic Kohala Sugar Plantation ditch

* Visit art galleries and the original King Kamehameha Statue in Kapaau

Hawi / kapaau bungalow

This is a really cool place. I've been to hawaii countless times and done the resort thing on several occasions but local is the way to go. My girlfriend and i rented this place right in the middle of kaapau yet it felt totally secluded. Quiet, clean and quite reasonably priced. Great view of ocean from the rooftop deck! The proprietors were super helpful with some local travel tips. If you're in north kohala, this is the chill spot.

A total gem!!!!

I was honored to be the first non-family guest at the "Lychee Ohana", so named for the beautiful tree that shades the backyard. In Hawaiian, Ohana means family, and an "Ohana" is also the name for a self contained dwelling, like an "inlaw suite" where family can stay when visiting. The owners have created a fantastic, comfortable, quiet retreat from the world in Hawi/Kapaau, modern, well furnished and supplied, quite a bit more spacious than the pictures (as good as they are) would portend. For a couple, it is perfect, or for a single traveller like me on this trip. When people think of the Big Island, they think of the two main tourist areas, Kailua Kona to the south & west & the Kohala coast. These areas are rife with resorts & condos, and as beautiful as they are, are of course, very "touristy". North Kohala is generally overlooked, but it is I feel, truly the most beautiful part of the Big Island. The climate is the perfect balance between the arid leeward side (Kona) and the somewhat endampened windward side (Hilo). The Kohala mountains are stunning, green ranch pastures and beautiful vistas are your driving companions on the 250, which is a straight shot out the front door. (The road on which the property is located is an extension of the 250). This hiway takes you to the beautiful town of Waimea about 20 minutes away, set amongst the rolling hills of ranch country. There is a Foodland (grocery store) that rivals any I have seen in Honolulu in size, prices and variety. The unit is furnished with a cooler, so I suggest getting your perishable groceries after you pick up the cooler and icepacks from the unit and making the trip to Waimea. As a note, I cooked nearly all my meals in the unit, it is well suited for this. The town of Hawi is charming, with shops, galleries & restaurants, further down the road is Pololu Valley, a stunning vista. If you want a true get away, you can really find all the beaches and historical sites to round out your trip on the Kohala peninsula, if you want exclusive shops, fine dining etc, Waikaloa is 25 miles south. As a note, Hawi is the turn around point for the cycling portion of the Ironman triathlon. The property is exactly 46.3 miles from the Kona airport and it's 73.6 miles to the top of Mauna Kea. I can't recommend this place enough, it is the perfect base camp for an "off the beaten path" Hawaiian adventure, and a quiet peaceful contrast to the bustling resorts that line the Kona coast. Aloha!

Great little spot!

Really nice little studio. Very clean, well appointed, comfortable. Easy to access food, galleries etc... Location was great. Just off the main roadway and still felt very private. 20 minutes from the best beaches yet located in a beautiful small community. We would definitely stay there again.

New and exciting

  • 5 of 5
I was so comfortable in this rental I almost didn't want to leave!! A place that is as cool as a day at the beach. Hawi and Kapaau towns are within walking distance. Lots to explore especially at the "end of the road!" And where else can you shower outside with in city limits!
