About Rusty

My family has been in the Bay Area for generations and survived the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. My grandmother owned a cottage on Mt. Tamalpais in the 1920's. My father helped put up some of the original hiking trail signs on the mountain. I came back to Mill Valley when I was working as CNN correspondent in San Francisco. I've traveled all over the world and Mill Valley is one of the most wonderful spots on earth.

Rusty purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Rusty chose Mill Valley

Mill Valley is so close to one of the world's great cities, has numerous great restaurants and charm, yet it's minutes to be on hiking trails with gorgeous views and no one around. Trips to the wine country in Napa and Sonoma Valleys are 40 minutes away. This is the cottage on the property of my main house which I now rent out. Because there are two redwoods just feet from the windows and small deck, you feel like you are in a tree-house. But there are many windows and LOTS of light. It feels very private yet, so close to everything by walking or by car.

There is also a small spa walking distance down the hill where you can get a massage.

Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. Nearby is the Green Gulch Farm, a Buddhist retreat featuring classes and organic produce.

Sausalito is only a couple miles away and you can walk or drive to this charming town right on San Francisco Bay which is very European in feel. There is also a great art festival there every September.

There are several state and federal recreation areas for hikers and bikers within ten miles of Mill Valley. Not only is there Muir Woods, with it's gorgeous huge redwoods, but Mt. Tamalpais where some of the first mountain bikes were designed to ride on the fire trails. Stinson Beach and Muir Beach are both quaint beach towns just over the hill from Mill Valley.

What makes this cottage unique

I fell in love with the property because it was SO close to where I worked in San Francisco, yet I felt like I was miles away from the rest of the world. The cottage is very private and quiet with soaring redwoods outside, yet lots of windows make it very light and cheery.

A peaceful retreat (with a 10 month old!)

  • 5 of 5
We were returning to visit friends in the area for a long weekend, our first trip with our 10 month old son. First, the location- just a few minutes to groceries and downtown Mill Valley, a short walk to the bike trail, that allows access on foot to everything Sausalito and Mill Valley have to offer if you don't feel like driving.

And the inside- a comfortable king sized bed, a large living area, and the office, which for us, served as a nursery using a travel crib. The place is so quiet that our son slept uninterrupted from the first night and it was great not to have to tiptoe around him after he went to sleep. We were also visited by a family of deer every night and loved our stay.

Rusty is extremely responsive and easy to work with, everything was seamless from the moment we arrived. Many thanks for sharing your wonderful property, we'll be back!

Chosen for its location, the cottage is very tastefully decorated with good king bed and great leather reading chair. We were minutes from route 1 to go to Point Reyes and from 101 to get to Golden Gate but cottage is on hill off side street so very quiet and restful. Owner a pleasure to work with good directions and recommendations for in Mill Valley.

Tree Top Views

An excellent starting point to see the sights. My husband & I truly enjoyed the cottage. Greeted the morning with a welcome committee of a doe and her fawns! And then we were off to see Marin county. We can highly recommend two golf courses, San Geronimo & Indian Valley, very nice courses, great conditions and reasonably priced. We did a lot of sight seeing but crashed out in the peace & quiet of the cottage. Wonderful vacation., made even better by the comforts of "home"

Great clean cottage

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I recently spent 4 nights here while visiting our family in Mill Valley. The cottage is in excellent condition, clean and well maintained. The linens are generous and all the amenities are provided in the kitchen. While the bathroom is quite small, the shower provided lots of hot water and the vanity area was workable. Easy access to San Francisco and restaurants and the ferrys. Loved the privacy of a free standing home and the frequent deer visiting the backyard area.

Good place to see San Francisco from

  • 4 of 5
The unit is free standing with under cover car park. The photos accurately reflect the quality of the furnishings and fittings. It is very well positioned close to a Supermarket and easy striking distance from the sights of San Francisco.
The TV did work despite us reporting it as not working to the owner and the bathroom was tiny. It was an interesting experience using the toilet with a clear glass window looking in to the bathroom. I did like the balcony and the study and the included internet connection, but did find the unit to be very small.

Marin County just north of San Francisco, is filled with quaint towns and beautiful scenery. The giant redwoods of Muir Woods are a 'must see', both majestic and humbling, and right over the hill from the cottage. Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries, restaurants and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of live music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. The towns of Mill Valley and Sausalito are unique but quite different from each other. There are several state and national recreation areas nearby featuring world renowned hiking and mountain biking. Pt. Reyes National Seashore features oyster farms where you can sit outside and picnic and barbecue your own oysters. Close by San Francisco has everything one of the world's great cities can offer; museums, galleries, shopping, historic sites, world-renowned restaurants, parks, breathtaking views and much more! Also close, via a short beautiful drive, are Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Valleys featuring world class wineries. For those who love the water, you can rent kayaks and paddle San Francisco Bay or rent a sail boat. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge with it's incredible panorama of San Francisco is an incredible experience. A short walk down from the cottage and you are on a walking and bike path through a picturesque wetland which is part of San Francisco Bay. There is also a small spa within walking distance where you can take a hot tub and get a massage. There is also a horseback riding stable located in Tennessee Valley and less than 3 miles from the cottage.
