About Rusty

My family has been in the Bay Area for generations and survived the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. My grandmother owned a cottage on Mt. Tamalpais in the 1920's. My father helped put up some of the original hiking trail signs on the mountain. I came back to Mill Valley when I was working as CNN correspondent in San Francisco. I've traveled all over the world and Mill Valley is one of the most wonderful spots on earth.

Rusty purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Rusty chose Mill Valley

Mill Valley is so close to one of the world's great cities, has numerous great restaurants and charm, yet it's minutes to be on hiking trails with gorgeous views and no one around. Trips to the wine country in Napa and Sonoma Valleys are 40 minutes away. This is the cottage on the property of my main house but is separated by trees, stairs and a deck. Because there are two redwoods just feet from the windows and small deck, you feel like you are in a tree-house. But there are many windows and LOTS of light. It feels very private yet, so close to everything by walking or by car.

There is also a small spa walking distance down the hill where you can get a massage.

Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. Nearby is the Green Gulch Farm, a Buddhist retreat featuring classes and organic produce.

Sausalito is only a couple miles away and you can walk or drive to this charming town right on San Francisco Bay which is very European in feel. There is also a great art festival there every September.

There are several state and federal recreation areas for hikers and bikers within ten miles of Mill Valley. Not only is there Muir Woods, with it's gorgeous huge redwoods, but Mt. Tamalpais where some of the first mountain bikes were designed to ride on the fire trails. Stinson Beach and Muir Beach are both quaint beach towns just over the hill from Mill Valley.

What makes this cottage unique

I fell in love with the property because it was SO close to where I worked in San Francisco, yet I felt like I was miles away from the rest of the world. The cottage is very private and quiet with soaring redwoods outside, yet lots of windows make it very light and cheery.

Just Right

The cottage provides you easy access to the San Francisco area, yet set in the redwoods. After a busy day out I came back to a quiet place that Rusty has done a wonderful job decorating. I plan to stay here again. Rusty was very helpful and insured that my stay went well.

Great location! Very comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was very clean and comfortable. Rusty was very responsive to all of my questions before we arrived and while we were there she was always helpful. The cottage was nicely furnished and has everything you could need for your stay. The location is fabulous. We visited family and the cottage was very convenient for them to visit and for us to visit their homes as well. We would definitely stay there again.

comfortable and well-located

  • 5 of 5

We had a great 5 day stay in Rusty's cottage. Everything was clean and comfortable. You can walk to downtown Mill Valley from the apartment, and see lots of area sites easily from this location. We took the ferry from Sausalito to San Francisco, which was a lot of fun and allowed fantastic views of The GG Bridge, Alcatrez, and the SF skyline. The ferry goes to the beautiful Ferry Bldg, which has great gourmet food shops, and an impressive farmers market on Saturdays.

Charming and Quaint

My family loved staying at Rusty's adorable cottage. It has an open floor plan which made it easy with our 2 year old. It had all the amenities we needed and was so perfect. We can't wait to stay again!

Terrific cottage - convenient location to everything in bay area

  • 5 of 5

Stayed there with my wife and our 8 month old son in October. Description provided is perfect - it's a cozy one bedroom with an office that serves as a perfect 2nd bedroom for an infant. Location is great to access San Francisco, wine country, as well as the wonderful towns of Sausalito and Mill Valley. Special bonus that our stay coincided with fleet week, which we were able to enjoy both from Sausalito and from San Franscisco over the weekend. Highly recommended if you're able to make it here during that week.

Cozy, modern, easy, relaxing & clean stay cation

  • 5 of 5

Rusty was the perfect hostess. Frequent vrbo-ers, her cottage ranks among the best we've had. The location was unbelievable; our work commute to/fro SF were so easy. Inside, the amenities were clean, modern and all we needed. Rusty was incredibly responsive and personable. Flexible too, to accommodate a last minute extension for us.

You will not be disappointed if you stay here. Thank you again Rusty!

Marin County just north of San Francisco, is filled with quaint towns and beautiful scenery. The giant redwoods of Muir Woods are a 'must see', both majestic and humbling, and right over the hill from the cottage. Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries, restaurants and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of live music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. The towns of Mill Valley and Sausalito are unique but quite different from each other. There are several state and national recreation areas nearby featuring world renowned hiking and mountain biking. Pt. Reyes National Seashore features oyster farms where you can sit outside and picnic and barbecue your own oysters. Close by San Francisco has everything one of the world's great cities can offer; museums, galleries, shopping, historic sites, world-renowned restaurants, parks, breathtaking views and much more! Also close, via a short beautiful drive, are Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Valleys featuring world class wineries. For those who love the water, you can rent kayaks and paddle San Francisco Bay or rent a sail boat. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge with it's incredible panorama of San Francisco is an incredible experience. A short walk down from the cottage and you are on a walking and bike path through a picturesque wetland which is part of San Francisco Bay. There is also a small spa within walking distance where you can take a hot tub and get a massage. There is also a horseback riding stable located in Tennessee Valley and less than 3 miles from the cottage.
