About Karen Whitaker

Tim and Karen live in the Roanoke Valley of Virginia, but call Bryson City there second home. Karen spent many summers there with her grandparents, Troy and Maude Allen, enjoying all the offerings of the Smokey Mountains.

Karen Whitaker purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Karen Whitaker chose Bryson City

We built Allen's Retreat on family land passed down from my grandparents. The privacy, yet closeness to town and the beautiful mountain views made it all the more special. We couldn't have picked a better location to soak in the hot tub under the covering of our magnificent porch.

What makes this cabin unique

One of the great things about this luxury cabin is location, location, location! Only 10 minutes from town, and only 1 mile of hard surfaced road off highway US 74. This cabin is motorcycle friendly, and you don't have to worry about any steep mountainous driveways making it a challenge to get to. Once you arrive to Allen's Retreat, you can let your cares melt away in the spa boasting 45 jets. After a relaxing soak, you can enjoy watching tv in any of the bedrooms or great room. Then fix your favorite comfort foods in this plentiful kitchen with all stainless steel appliances and granite countertops.

AMAZING CABIN!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent our honeymoon here, and we immensely enjoyed our stay! We will definitely be returning at some point. It is close enough to Asheville to be able to make day trips for activities that may be there as well as many other options for hiking or other outdoor activities! The cabin is elaborate inside and out with a fantastic view of the mountains! Very highly recommend this cabin for up to 6 people! Tim and Karen are awesome and did everything in their power to ensure that we had an excellent experience!

Relaxing Weekend

  • 5 of 5

My guest and I were looking for a quiet retreat and this cabin fulfilled in every way. Enjoyed the peace and quiet off the beaten path. The cabin was beautifully appointed. The atmosphere was relaxing and the hot tub was great on a cold crisp night. I would have loved a little later check out but I will definitely rent again in the future when visiting this area.

Great Escape!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at this house and in the area. I give it 5 stars because you can really tell the owners went above and beyond to make each tennants stay enjoyable. For instance, everything in the house is new. There were few things that could have been better - the place only had 1 dish towel in the kitchen and each bathroom only had 1 roll of toilet paper.

Also, based on the guest book, everyone seems to love the dog that comes to visit every day (belongs to a neighbor.) But in our 3 day stay, the dog managed to chew on anything and everything he could get his teeth on. The most upsetting was our $300 bike rack, still on the car, that he managed to chew apart rendering it useless from that point on.

Otherwise, we enjoyed many activities in the area, from fishing, whit water rafting, and boating, to mountain biking and more.

Owner's Response: So glad you guys enjoyed your stay at Allen's Retreat and Bryson City; hope you will come visit us again! I apologize that you didn't find the extra kitchen towels located by the stove. My number and my house manager's number are listed in the welcome book, and either of us would have been happy to assist. As, far as toilet paper, we provide starters, and a refill in the drawers of each bath, but anymore that is needed must be replenished by the guests. And that infamous dog that roamed around-I understand that PAWS shelter picked him up, maybe not soon enough. So sorry to hear about your bike rack! When I stayed at a cabin in Bryson City before building Allen's Retreat, a local hound took mine and my husband's Keens shoes we used for all river and hiking activities and we had to go all the way to Asheville to buy new ones-UGGHHH! That is why I chose to build closeable gates at each entrance of Allen's Retreat, so that guests could secure their belongings out of the reach of dogs, bears, and other unpredictable wildlife.

Tranquility and convenience!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had a getaway weekend at Allen's Retreat last weekend. It was a wonderful space to house the 8 of us. The amenities and decor were spectacular! It makes me want to redecorate my apartment cabin style. We were near all the river activities we enjoy and we LOVED tubing down deep creek. Also, be sure and check out the brewery while you are in town.
