Iris is a converted barn located in beautiful grounds in the secluded hamlet of Stancombe. It comprises high quality self-catering accommodation with all the modern utilities—wifi, washing machine, dish washer, microwave etc.

Stancombe includes superb leisure facilities including a heated indoor swimming pool (6m x 13m), recently renovated outdoor tennis court, snooker room with full sized table, games room with table tennis, billiards & darts & an outdoor children’s play area — or you could just wander around the beautiful grounds. Stancombe offers a delightful holiday, in all seasons.

Iris is a “topsy turvy” cottage comprising 3 bedrooms — 1 double ensuite on the ground floor and two twins with a shared bath/shower room on the lower ground floor. Living accommodation includes lounge / diner / kitchen on the ground floor.

There is a private courtyard at the back of the property whilst the front provides wonderful view of South Devon countryside.

We bought Iris to give us a bolthole outside the city We are both from the west country and walking the cliffs of south Devon as a family is one of the things that reminds us that life is great!

Stancombe is a wonderful secluded place - peaceful and calming - but with lots of amenities and close to lots of wonderful countryside, beaches and eateries.

South Hams, in the south of Devon is famous for its beautiful unspoiled coastline and has the mildest year-round climate on mainland Britain. From Stancombe you are within easy reach of the dramatic granite slopes of Dartmoor, breath-taking countryside and spectacular coastline and beaches. Salcombe (10 miles) has many interesting shops and restaurants and is a designated area of natural beauty and the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve (3 miles) is the largest freshwater lake in South West England.

The naval town of Dartmouth (10 miles), famous for its castle and bustling harbour provides a wide range of independent shops and restaurants. The market towns of Kingsbridge (3 miles) and Totnes also provide excellent shops, restaurants and pubs.

  • The upstairs bathroom is ensuite. The downstairs shower room is shared by the two twin bedrooms.

  • The double bedroom is on the ground floor of Iris and boasts an en-suite bathroom. The two twin rooms are downstairs (lower ground) and share a shower room. Both the twin rooms have patio doors to the cottage's private rear courtyard. All linen is provided and, with a modern central heating system, the cottage is warm and cosy at all times of the year. There is a portable TV in one of the twin rooms and all rooms have TV aerial socket. We have taken on board comments about mustiness downstairs and installed specialist ventilation equipment throughout the cottage early in 2010. We also now have wifi in the cottage.

Notes: Stancombe manor boasts excellent leisure facilities. As well as the heated indoor pool there is a large games room with pool and table tennis and a separate snooker room with full sized table. The sauna is available to Iris guests & is coin operated. The cottage is based in a secluded valley and users can roam freely round the beautiful 21 acre grounds which include established cider orchards. From Stancombe there are numerous fabulous walks - the local lanes, the world famous South West Coast Path and breathtaking Dartmoor. Nearby are excellent water sports facilities, golf, horse riding etc. Dartmouth, Salcombe and Totnes all offer excellent shopping. There a many excellent eateries nearby - from seaside and country pubs offering great lunches & suppers to the famous restaurant at Buckland Toussaints Hotel (just 2 miles from Stancombe). The nearby town of Kingsbridge has a range of shops offering great local produce.

Beautiful Cosy Cottage

I arrived at Stancombe, Iris on a sunny saturday in october. We were in the cottage and unpacked within the same hour. The amazing facilities on site are a bonus along the side classic devon cottage. We had plenty of use out of both the tennis court and the swimming pool, we also enjoyed the golf course and snooker room. The amazing coastal walks were beautiful and we did many throughout our stay. I can safely say that my stay at Iris cottage was one of the most lovely, yet simple, holidays i've have experienced in an awfully long time. I hope to return in the future and I have recommended it to all of my friends and family as the perfect get away and a great holiday. I'd like to thank the owner, Alison for being so helpful and informative prior and following the stay.
I hope to be back in the near future.

A very relaxing holiday

We stayed at Iris Cottage the first week of November 2011. The cottage provides very comfortable, warm and homely accommodation with everything you need. The kitchen is well stocked, all the bedrooms are a good size and it's a bonus having two bathrooms. Stancombe itself is such a quiet, peaceful place, yet it offers great facilities such as pool, tennis court, snooker room which are in great condition. We went for some beautiful coastal walks, discovered lovely beaches and had some fantastic pub lunches. It was great to finish the day with a swim in the pool at Stancombe. Naturally it was very quiet when we were there in November but I can imagine it would offer an equally quiet and peaceful holiday in peak season as there is so much open space. Overall it was the perfect escape from every day life. I would definitely recommend Iris cottage to friends and family.

Perfect family holiday accommodation

We have been to Stancombe several times, but this was our first visit to Iris. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The cottage was very comfortable. We didn't experience any damp problems in any of the bedrooms, but I understand the owners have put in a new ventilation system which appears to be working! Hoping to return for another visit next winter.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Pet-friendly, Girls Getaway, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children

Iris Cottage a Fri to Fri rental in S Devon

We had a fantastic holiday at this site. The cottage was very lovely and well equipped. the only draw back was that the downstairs was a little damp and there were comments form previous users that their asthmatic son suffered from sleeping in one of the two downstairs bedrooms.
The pool is excellent, there was good play equipment outside. Plus tennis courts and a snooker table room. with all necessary equipment provided. Also a few books and games provided in the cottage.
For children there was also a games room with a table tennis table and a somewhat battered pool table. Lovely beaches nearby both sandy and shingle.
A nice touch was that the owners ensure that there is stock of dry food so that you don;t have to rush out the moment you arrive to get those essentials.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children
