The garden cottage, set away from the main house, sits on a peaceful, sun drenched acre and a half of very secluded land, down a quiet country lane, with seasonal creeks just beyond your private deck. You will delight in waking to the sounds of birds chirping and will likely see our resident family of deer roaming the property. You will enjoy the backdrop of eucalyptus, redwood, oak and fir trees as you sit relaxing in your own private hot tub, while also enjoying the views of apple orchards and tree-lined vistas in the distance. The cottage comes equipped with all the amenities you will need for your comfort and enjoyment, including plush bathrobes, organic bathing products, luxurious bedding, a stocked kitchenette with fresh ground local organic coffee and teas, and your own welcome basket upon your arrival including freshly baked and other delectable treats to begin your vacation in style.
We're Janet and Matthew Joyce and we'll be your hosts during your stay. Since you'll be our only guests, you can be sure to have as much privacy or attention as you desire while you're with us. It's completely up to you.
We have been together for 30 years and it's been quite an incredible journey for us. We have been married for 23 of those years and we've raised two incredible daughters together. Before settling down, we spent years exploring the world, camping and backpacking, and meeting people from almost every continent. Parenting has been a remarkable and rewarding focal point of our lives for the past 21 years, and it has taken us from our beginnings in Santa Cruz, California where we both went to college, to Boulder, Colorado where we spent 12 wonderful years, and now back to our home in California where we feel truly blessed and settled.
Matthew is a consultant in the energy industry, working with corporations both large and small to make a difference in this world through promoting and implementing energy efficiency products and policies. He is also something of a Renascence man between his love of exploration, travel and literature, and his life-long passion for learning all things scientific, geographical and mechanical.
Janet is a Clinical Psychologist who has spent more than 20 years working with teenagers, families and couples. She is also an avid baker (which you will discover for yourself!), a passionate gardener, and a lover of science and literature.
We welcome you to our property and into our lives, where we will strive to make your stay with us truly memorable.
We've traveled widely. It's been an adventure exploring the world's diverse mix of climates, peoples, lifestyles, and cuisines. Over time we've zeroed in on where and what makes us feel at our very best: Mild weather that's great for year round gardening and outdoor activities; abundant fresh organic locally grown food and wines; open minded people of diverse backgrounds and interests; and a rural lifestyle close to big city amenities and the beach. When we put it all together no place on earth makes us feel as relaxed, as at peace, and yet as revitalized as we feel when we're spending time on the property. It's a magical spot and we're not alone in our thinking. Visitors ranging from family and friends to cottage guests and even delivery people recognize there is something special about the place. Come join us and we think you'll feel it too.
Two words seem to be repeated over and over when people explain how they feel when they visit here: Relaxed and Recharged. Maybe it's the secluded setting, nestled between the shady forest and the open sunny orchard, the tweets and chirping of the birds, or glimpsing the strolling comfort of the variety of wildlife who share this land with us. Perhaps it's the private hot tub next to the seasonal creek; a romantic moment beside the glowing warmth of the gas fireplace; or a second helping Janet's outrageous baked goods. Everyone has their own special moments. We fully expect you'll discover your own.
My wife and I traveled from Northern Indiana for a visit to San Francisco and wine country. The choice we made in staying at the Garden Cottage was one of the best decisions we've made. We had a great time. Very well maintained, comfortable, warm and inviting. Every attention attention to detail is there, from a wealth of information on wineries and hikes sent to us beforehand, down to warm cookies and fruit when we arrived and fresh baked scones at departure. Centrally located to everything we wanted to do and the experience exceeded our expectation for the price we paid. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to get away for a little getaway. Already miss it!!
My wife and I booked a weekend stay while the kids hung out with their aunts and uncles in San Francisco. The cottage is wonderful--comfortable, quiet, and cozy. Janet and Matthew were very welcoming and generous. The pictures of the setting do not do it justice. Janet directed us to a wonderful trail for a run in the morning. The landscape was idyllic. The back deck is perfect for relaxing with a book and cup of coffee or glass of wine. You can't go wrong.
My wife and I rented the Garden Cottage for a winter getaway to explore wine country. The cottage, the location and the wonderful owners all made our stay a great break from the cold of Wisconsin.
The cottage is surrounded by a bird sanctuary the provides peace, great photos and enjoyable sounds as you walk the grounds. Inside the layout is perfect with very nice and comfortable furnishings. Our morning coffee on the deck started the day. After exploring we enjoyed cheese and crackers over a glass of wine while we planned the evening.
Janet and Matthew could not have been better hosts. They made sure we were taken care of while being very respectful of our privacy. Janet baked great cookies for a welcome basket and then surprised us with delicious fresh baked scones.
On the recommendation of Janet, we had breakfast at Howard Station Cafe. It was so good we went three days in a row.
Rent the Garden Cottage, you will not be disappointed and will have memories that last the test of time!

We had the most special valentines day weekend at the Garden Cottage! Everything was exactly as described. Janet and Matthew go out of their way to think of everything you may need. We had planned to eat breakfast out, but the cottage was so beautiful and peaceful that we ended up staying in for breakfast and drinking coffee in the hot tub and taking long walks in the country. Luckily Janet provided delicious baked goods, coffee, cream, snacks, and fruit so that we had breakfast! I highly recommend planning to bring some breakfast items (trust me you want to eat breakfast there). There is a fridge and fully stocked kitchen.
Of course with wine country and amazing restaurants all around we did make it out of the cottage. Our favorite wine in the area is Dutton Goldfield and Marry Edwards; both very close to the cottage. The Backyard, Willi's Wine Bar and Willi's Seafood and Raw Bar were all outstanding restaurants (Willi's Seafood is better if you only have time for one Willi). Went to Willi's wine bar the first night and it was so good we had to try Willi's Seafood!
I can emphasize enough how relaxing and wonderful a stay we had. We will definitely try to stay here again for our next annual wine country trip!
This location was perfect for our trip to wine country. The size and space was exactly what we needed, with a small kitchen area to prepare quick breakfasts in the morning before heading out and brew coffee (she left local ground coffee for us which saved buying a whole bag for only 3 days). A small fridge for storing food as well. She also baked us cookies and left fresh fruit. Any directions or recommendations that were needed, she kindly provided those as well. The hot tub after a long day, and long travel was perfect. The property backs up to a forest so the peace and quiet of the forested area behind the property was serene. In the morning and evening, all you hear are birds. Everything was clean and I honestly could not ask for much more on a vacation to Sonoma County than this. You're in the heart of Sonoma wine country, you're an hour drive to the coast with views and sites all along the way, an hour from Napa, and without traffic, an hour and 15 to SFO. Highly Recommend!
What a wonderful experience we had staying at the Garden Cottage. Janet greeted us with fresh baked cookies and many helpful hints about restaurants, etc. We so enjoyed every aspect of this cottage and especially the delicious breakfast treats left on our doorstep-what incredible service!
We highly recommend staying here and will definitely be back in the future.
The cottage is located down a private country lane in the hills just 10 minutes from downtown Sebastopol, making it convenient to all that Sonoma County has to offer. And trust us when we say, that's a lot!
Once you venture out and explore the surrounding area beyond the cottage you will delight in so many Sonoma County offerings, like the ones listed below:
There are more than 400 wineries in Sonoma County and virtually all of them are within a one hour drive of the cottage. There are 75 wineries and tasting rooms within 15 minutes of us alone, including some world class vineyards and some quaint, small tasting rooms as well.
The charming small towns of Sebastopol, Graton, Forestville, Occidential and Freestone are all less than 10 minutes away with restaurants and bakeries, coffee and tea houses, bookstores, specialty boutiques, spas, antique shops and art galleries.
There are 20 local farmers' markets in Sonoma County (several are open year round), ensuring that you can enjoy locally sourced organic produce and a wide variety of artisanal crafts every day of week, except Mondays.
Bodega Bay's fresh seafood, beaches and the dramatic scenery of the Sonoma Coastline are just over 20 minutes away via a scenic drive down highways 12 and 1. We've got redwoods growing right here on the property, but if you want to explore Armstrong Redwood State Preserve it's less than half an hour way across the Russian River in Guernville.
And for outdoor enthusiasts there are also: miles of beautiful hiking trails both along the magnificent coastline and in the hills and forests of Sonoma County, road and mountain bicycling, canoeing and kayaking, windsurfing, open ocean and/or fresh water fishing, and even hot air ballooning opportunities nearby.
Within Sonoma County you can also enjoy an array of cultural activities including, live Shakespeare plays, internationally recognized musical acts, symphonic performances, museums, shopping outlet stores and the Art Trails tour of local artists' studios and the Farm Trails tour of Sonoma County's artisnal producers, agriculture and family farms.
We will provide you with up to date calendars and lists of local events, schedules for Farmers' Markets, maps, restaurant menus and phone numbers for everything from local massage therapists and drivers for your wine tasting tours, to coupons and pricing at the day spa, wineries' tasting room hours, and even our own favorites and recommendations, all to enhance your enjoyment of our area.
Wine Country Garden Cottage is very well designed for everything from a super relaxed and low-key, private romantic get away to an action-packed adventure based vacation experience. And everything in between!
