About Janet & Matthew Joyce

We're Janet and Matthew Joyce and we'll be your hosts during your stay. Since you'll be our only guests, you can be sure to have as much privacy or attention as you desire while you're with us. It's completely up to you.

We have been together for 30 years and it's been quite an incredible journey for us. We have been married for 23 of those years and we've raised two incredible daughters together. Before settling down, we spent years exploring the world, camping and backpacking, and meeting people from almost every continent. Parenting has been a remarkable and rewarding focal point of our lives for the past 21 years, and it has taken us from our beginnings in Santa Cruz, California where we both went to college, to Boulder, Colorado where we spent 12 wonderful years, and now back to our home in California where we feel truly blessed and settled.

Matthew is a consultant in the energy industry, working with corporations both large and small to make a difference in this world through promoting and implementing energy efficiency products and policies. He is also something of a Renascence man between his love of exploration, travel and literature, and his life-long passion for learning all things scientific, geographical and mechanical.

Janet is a Clinical Psychologist who has spent more than 20 years working with teenagers, families and couples. She is also an avid baker (which you will discover for yourself!), a passionate gardener, and a lover of science and literature.

We welcome you to our property and into our lives, where we will strive to make your stay with us truly memorable.

Why Janet & Matthew Joyce chose Sebastopol

We've traveled widely. It's been an adventure exploring the world's diverse mix of climates, peoples, lifestyles, and cuisines. Over time we've zeroed in on where and what makes us feel at our very best: Mild weather that's great for year round gardening and outdoor activities; abundant fresh organic locally grown food and wines; open minded people of diverse backgrounds and interests; and a rural lifestyle close to big city amenities and the beach. When we put it all together no place on earth makes us feel as relaxed, as at peace, and yet as revitalized as we feel when we're spending time on the property. It's a magical spot and we're not alone in our thinking. Visitors ranging from family and friends to cottage guests and even delivery people recognize there is something special about the place. Come join us and we think you'll feel it too.

What makes this cottage unique

Two words seem to be repeated over and over when people explain how they feel when they visit here: Relaxed and Recharged. Maybe it's the secluded setting, nestled between the shady forest and the open sunny orchard, the tweets and chirping of the birds, or glimpsing the strolling comfort of the variety of wildlife who share this land with us. Perhaps it's the private hot tub next to the seasonal creek; a romantic moment beside the glowing warmth of the gas fireplace; or a second helping Janet's outrageous baked goods. Everyone has their own special moments. We fully expect you'll discover your own.

Just fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I booked a weekend stay while the kids hung out with their aunts and uncles in San Francisco. The cottage is wonderful--comfortable, quiet, and cozy. Janet and Matthew were very welcoming and generous. The pictures of the setting do not do it justice. Janet directed us to a wonderful trail for a run in the morning. The landscape was idyllic. The back deck is perfect for relaxing with a book and cup of coffee or glass of wine. You can't go wrong.

Owner's Response: Comfortable, quiet and cozy is exactly what we hope our guests will experience at the cottage, so it’s wonderful to know that’s what you and Sally found! It’s also great to hear that our photos are only a glimpse and can’t really capture the beauty and serenity of the cottage setting. It was delightful to meet you both. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your California adventure with your kids and that you’ll find your way back here again for another (much deserved) respite! Warmest regards to you and your family.

Perfect Cottage for Exploring Sonoma County!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I rented the Garden Cottage for a winter getaway to explore wine country. The cottage, the location and the wonderful owners all made our stay a great break from the cold of Wisconsin.

The cottage is surrounded by a bird sanctuary the provides peace, great photos and enjoyable sounds as you walk the grounds. Inside the layout is perfect with very nice and comfortable furnishings. Our morning coffee on the deck started the day. After exploring we enjoyed cheese and crackers over a glass of wine while we planned the evening.

Janet and Matthew could not have been better hosts. They made sure we were taken care of while being very respectful of our privacy. Janet baked great cookies for a welcome basket and then surprised us with delicious fresh baked scones.

On the recommendation of Janet, we had breakfast at Howard Station Cafe. It was so good we went three days in a row.

Rent the Garden Cottage, you will not be disappointed and will have memories that last the test of time!

Owner's Response: Thanks very much, Jean and John for your kind review! We’re so pleased that your stay at the Garden Cottage left you with warmth to last you through the Wisconsin winter and beyond. It was truly a delight to meet the two of you and to have you here sharing our cottage and property. I know future guests will appreciate the ringing endorsement of Howard Station Café in Occidental. And I appreciate your compliments to my baking and to us as hosts as well. We do all we can to make our guests comfortable, and to give you that magical combination of attention and seclusion. Thanks again for visiting Sonoma County and we hope to see you back in the near future!

Peacful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had the most special valentines day weekend at the Garden Cottage! Everything was exactly as described. Janet and Matthew go out of their way to think of everything you may need. We had planned to eat breakfast out, but the cottage was so beautiful and peaceful that we ended up staying in for breakfast and drinking coffee in the hot tub and taking long walks in the country. Luckily Janet provided delicious baked goods, coffee, cream, snacks, and fruit so that we had breakfast! I highly recommend planning to bring some breakfast items (trust me you want to eat breakfast there). There is a fridge and fully stocked kitchen.

Of course with wine country and amazing restaurants all around we did make it out of the cottage. Our favorite wine in the area is Dutton Goldfield and Marry Edwards; both very close to the cottage. The Backyard, Willi's Wine Bar and Willi's Seafood and Raw Bar were all outstanding restaurants (Willi's Seafood is better if you only have time for one Willi). Went to Willi's wine bar the first night and it was so good we had to try Willi's Seafood!

I can emphasize enough how relaxing and wonderful a stay we had. We will definitely try to stay here again for our next annual wine country trip!

I’m so glad that you enjoyed the peace and quiet, and that you were so comfortable that you even changed your plans to be able to spend more of your time surrounded by this beautiful property. It’s very gratifying to know that the cottage made your Valentine’s Day celebration even more special! Thanks also for your review of Willi’s. It’s always helpful to future travelers to get another point of view on the best restaurants and activities in the area. It was wonderful meeting you both, and I do hope you will make the Garden Cottage part of your annual wine country trip! We’d love to have you.

Relaxing, Peaceful and Comfortable Experience

  • 5 of 5

This location was perfect for our trip to wine country. The size and space was exactly what we needed, with a small kitchen area to prepare quick breakfasts in the morning before heading out and brew coffee (she left local ground coffee for us which saved buying a whole bag for only 3 days). A small fridge for storing food as well. She also baked us cookies and left fresh fruit. Any directions or recommendations that were needed, she kindly provided those as well. The hot tub after a long day, and long travel was perfect. The property backs up to a forest so the peace and quiet of the forested area behind the property was serene. In the morning and evening, all you hear are birds. Everything was clean and I honestly could not ask for much more on a vacation to Sonoma County than this. You're in the heart of Sonoma wine country, you're an hour drive to the coast with views and sites all along the way, an hour from Napa, and without traffic, an hour and 15 to SFO. Highly Recommend!

Owner's Response: I want to thank you for your thoughtful review, and to say how glad we are that you enjoyed your stay. It's always gratifying to hear that our attention to detail translates into an enjoyable and relaxing experience for our guests! I'm also delighted that you enjoyed the scenic drive through the beautiful redwoods and rolling hills to the ocean from the cottage. That extra 40 minutes to get to the coast does take in some spectacular views and stopping places, and is well worth the extra time. I do hope to see you again on your future travels, and wish you only the very best until then!

What a wonderful experience we had staying at the Garden Cottage. Janet greeted us with fresh baked cookies and many helpful hints about restaurants, etc. We so enjoyed every aspect of this cottage and especially the delicious breakfast treats left on our doorstep-what incredible service!

Owner's Response: Thanks, Micki and Matt! I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay at the cottage so much. It certainly was a pleasure meeting you both and I'm very happy to hear that you plan to return for another visit! Your compliments might just inspire me to create my Garden Cottage Baking Book so our guests can bake up the treats at home that I have created here at the cottage. How fun would that be!? All the very best to you both!

Special Anniversary Stay! It was perfect!

  • 5 of 5

What a cozy and beautiful little cottage for us to center out of for our anniversary trip. Matthew and Janet were fabulous hosts who went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and at home! The location was perfect... we enjoyed our day trips and coming back to the the cottage for the evening. The private hot tub was relaxing and a nice place to sip wine and relax each evening. The special treats that Janet provided were thoughtful and appreciated. The photos were right on and very much reflected this rental accurately. The cottage was private, very clean and well taken care of. We HIGHLY recommend this this property to all family and friends. We would absolutely stay here again, should we be in the area. Thank you, Matthew and Janet, for a lovely stay!

Owner's Response: How delightful it was to help you celebrate your special anniversary at the cottage! We’ve been seeing quite a trend of couples celebrating anniversaries and even honeymoons in the cottage, and it seems the setting has built up some wonderful “couples energy!” To date, your 40th anniversary wins the prize for the greatest number of years. It was so wonderful meeting you both and we can only hope that your future adventures bring you back to this area for an even longer stay. Thanks Kristi and Craig, for your generosity and kindness!!
