Anyone who has stayed in London knows that two of the most popular neighborhoods to stay in are Notting Hill and Kensington. This darling mews house is located in Kensington -- a short walk to Princess Diana's Palace. You're a few blocks from Notting Hill, made famous by the movie of the same name, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.

Find yourself surrounded by trendy restaurants, brasseries, cafe's, shops, antique stores and fashion boutiques. Excellent supermarkets including a Whole Foods on High Street Kensington. Enjoy the famous Portobello Antiques Market takes place on Saturday mornings.

The location is just off Hornton Street in Kensington, in a charming Victorian mews. In olden days, the mews were the small streets behind the grand Victorian homes where the horses and carriages lived ... and they have all been converted into beautiful and popular homes. The neighborhood is secure and the Mews is exceptionally quiet for a good night's sleep.

Open the door to a small entryway painted in royal blue. Just beyond is the dining room with custom-made table to seat 6. Four pale blue dining chairs surround it in the photo below. There are 2 more chairs in the utility room behind.

On your right is the living room. The living room has a comfortable long sofa and cozy armchair, all beautifully upholstered and very comfortable. The quality of the furnishings is immediately apparent. There is a fireplace on the left and flat screen TV on the wall. Stereo and even ipod speakers complete the setting. This is a perfect room to relax in at the end of the day.

To the left of the dining room is the large kitchen; recently remodeled with cherry cabinets and dark granite counter top. Find every appliance from large frig/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and convection oven. The kitchen is fully stocked with stoneware dishes, pots and pans and serving dishes. You can definitely entertain here.

Back to the dining room and you'll find the utility room behind, with separate washer and dryer, second refrigerator freezer and good storage.

Next, take the stairs to the first floor (2nd floor American). Immediately on your right is the first bathroom, decorated in pretty French blue. Find a sink, bathtub/shower combination and toilet in fine working order. The house was remodeled to high standards as is evident in each room.

Next to the bathroom is bedroom 3, a charming room with two single beds decorated in Provencal style. Beautiful headboards and drapes complete the look in this pretty room.

Bedroom 2 follows down the corridor, with double bed, dresser and closet. We love the color choices and quality finish throughout the house. You'll appreciate the beauty when you stay in this pretty blue and cream room.

At the end of the hall is the Master bedroom with en suite bathroom. The bedroom features a queen-sized bed with a green and beige color theme. Find long closets next to the bathroom, dresser and good lighting to read by.

In the bathroom you'll find a bathtub/shower combination, toilet and sink.

The house is one of the prettiest we've seen in London, but the real advantage is stepping outside each day. There are pastry shops, bakeries, supermarkets and fantastic restaurants a short walk away. You'll walk to Kensington Gardens and Princess Diana's Palace, to Museum Row, to the Royal Albert Hall for concerts. Hop on the tube to view more landmarks; you're not far away. You'll enjoying eating out daily or shopping for food and cooking at home.

Great Kensington Mews Apartment

This lovely Mews house was perfect for two adults and three teens. Near to Notting Hill and Kensington High Street, it has easy London Underground Access in a neighborhood with many comfortable dining options. Try The Windsor Castle or if you want a bit of a walk the Abingdon. Both have good menus with chefs in the kitchen and neighborhood residents as patrons. The apartment kitchen serves well for breakfast before the day or for a dinner from the market if you are inclined to cook.

Ten Days in London

You always want guests to write a review that says the apartment was even better than pictured but this was not the case with the Hornton. No where on the website is there a photo of what you see from the front door of the unit. Basically, you are looking at an asphalt parking lot for the mews’ owners [I think there are12 houses] and there was often a car parked within two feet of the front door! The location actually has many advantages [e.g., the outside area is nice for families with children and the location is perfect for good restaurants and sightseeing] but the setting should not have come as a surprise. When we arrived from the airport, I was sure the driver had turned into the wrong road. This was an unfortunate first impression.

The kitchen was lovely, the mews was nicely laid out and beds had quality mattresses but an old hard chair in the living room and the chipping paint in the “tired” bathrooms were slightly disconcerting.

More importantly, the critical information for the apartment was not readily explained by the greeter. For example, my daughter, who arrived first at the Hornton, was told that the heat was on a timer but he never said what the on/off hours were or had to adjust them. The first night, we were freezing! Also, nowhere was there any mention of a working gas fireplace. We had no idea if this was off-limits or, if not, how it operated. Curiously, none of the reviews/descriptions ever mention the fireplace. There were also several burnt out light bulbs and no replacements anywhere in the unit. Batteries in the remotes and all clocks were missing, as well. Fortunately, I had extras in my luggage and used these.

Also, if you plan to work using WiFi, you will need to ask to have a signal booster brought in or rent your own, which we did and were very grateful to have anticipated possible issues. You can pick up and return these portable WiFi devices at Heathrow. Internet service was ridiculously slow and phone connections usually required standing outside the unit.

The information book in the Hornton was not especially helpful and needs to be updated to include information on washer/dryer use, etc.

Please note that our trip was not diminished by our slight disappointment in the Hornton. We had a fabulous time in London. Most of our complaints require little fixing and I would definitely recommend the apartment but small fixes would have gone a long way in creating a first-class experience.

A wonderful stay with a group of girlfriends. Such a cosy cottage with a darling kitchen and the comfiest beds. It was wonderful to come to our 'home' after cold days Christmas shopping on High Street Kensington. Kensington Park is just on the doorstep and it was exciting to be a neighbor of Kate & Will! Didn't spot them on my frosty morning runs though! A great base for exploring all of London. The Victoria & Albert was our favorite - like walking round the set of Downton Abbey. Already planning our return....

Great Location, Great apartment

Five of us stayed in this apartment recently and could not have been more pleased. The location, between the High St Kensington station and the Nottinghill stattion was superb, making train travel very easy. In addition, there are numerous buses in the streets around the unit which allowed our 4 year old grandson to experience the double decker. Having a Whole Foods within a 5 minute walk also made it easy to get food into the apartment. The unit itself was spacious and everything within it was clean and well taken care of. We had London Perfect arrange to have a cleaning person come in for an hour a couple of times and she did an excellent job of straightening out the bathrooms, kitchen and bedrooms. She also washed and dried the towels. While not part of the service, this was easily arranged and well worth the nominal cost. Having an apartment made London so much more enjoyable and this one was super. “
