Why this property?
I enjoy hosting guests from all over the world.
I try to treat folks as I would like to be treated while traveling.
In Volcano this means in part providing 'comfort' and a home like environment for folks that rivals their own homes conveniences and furnishings.
Warm heated beds, gas fireplace, heavy robes, flannel sheets, fresh coffee beans, waffles in the morning and such.
Volcano can get chilly (no cold) at times and building in these creature comforts for guests is a common sense pleasure to provide.
The cottage is creative, even a bit eccentric and filled with an interesting blend of antiques and worldly curiosities.
It is a cozy and fun cottage to spend time in after exploring and it does know how to provide an environment of privacy, intimacy and creature comforts.
I pride myself on good, even great linens.
The beds are heated and covered with heavy weight flannel sheets when the season dictates and of course wonderful high grade Kassatex towels and robes.
One must above all else in Volcano, be cozy and warm and well fed.
The cottage does this with ease and a smile.
This cute little cottage gave me the same feeling I used to have when staying at my Aunt and Uncle's cottage on the lake growing up! Having never rented a place like this, I was pleasantly surprised and would highly recommend this cottage over an impersonal hotel. Richard made things very easy and was very attentive to our needs. The ambiance was warm and inviting when we arrived with a fire burning, cozy lighting and the best fruit tray and waffle mix waiting. After instructions on how to operate the TVs, locks and fireplace, I rarely saw Richard, but he somehow knew just what we would like and had it there for us. I was working in Hilo for the week and he even texted me to let me know of a bad accident that had closed the road, suggesting I might want to have dinner in Hilo.
The cottage is clean, well kept, has great beds, has a well-equipped kitchen, and the feeling sitting on the deck in the middle of a rain forest is very relaxing. Between the environment and the small treats Richard left for me, I felt very spoiled.
I highly recommend this cottage for adults, but would be a little hesitant to take young children unless they are angels who never pick things up. There are many collectibles throughout the cottage. It is obvious that Richard has put a lot of thought into every detail and really cares about the people he rents to, doing all he can to make them very comfortable. The only problem for me is that this isn't located in my back yard.
Absolutely loved our stay here, felt like living in a mini art gallery/museum: everywhere you turn you wonder at the stories behind each photograph, coin, carving, vase. Richard was right next door if we had any questions, very helpful, but also respectful of our privacy. Above and beyond: fresh tropical flowers, fresh fruit and coffee cake. He even covered or car window when he noticed we left it down and it started to rain. Best place we've rented. Beautiful lush tropical forest. Loved hiking the nearby volcanoes.
Perfect location to hear birdsong all day! And to walk around the neighborhood feeling the lush forrest of Volcano Village. We visited Volcano National Parks with an easy drive and saw the red glow of lava in Halema'uma'u Crater each night. Richard is a great host and provided a beautiful array of fruit and breakfast supplies. He was so kind to get the fireplace going before we arrived so the house would feel cozy and warm.
We enjoyed a wonderful 3 night stay in Volcano House. It is a real treasure trove with a lot of though and care put into the whole eclectic experience. Richard is a wonderful host who thinks of everything and goes above and beyond expectations. He even taught us how to make waffles for breakfast - what a great treat. The fresh fruit is delicious. Highly recommend. All of this right on the door step of the National Park!
Our family (two teens, two adults) really enjoyed our time at the Volcano House. It was the perfect place for us and a great location from which to explore the national park area. If we have the opportunity to return to the Big Island, we would absolutely stay here again.
While staying there, we easily reached the green sand beach, the black sand beach, and ziplining north of Hilo. The national park itself is minutes from the house. We tried three of the nearby Volcano restaurants and were happy with them all.
I agree with (but won't repeat) many of the points from the other reviewers about the lovely and interesting cottage and how helpful Richard is. We were very comfortable there and especially enjoyed the fireplace (it really does get chilly at night!), the kitchen (the fruit and coffee were super), the games and Netflix, and many other thoughtful touches throughout. Richard explained everything and was very accommodating to our arrival and departure times, which we greatly appreciated.
Our family will always have special memories of our stay in Volcano and fondness for Volcano House itself.
I'm at a loss as I search for descriptive adjectives to do this property justice. Fiercely fine and funky, whimsical and wonderful, peaceful and perfect for our anniversary staycation.
If the innkeeper (Richard - as unobtrusive as a phantom) has failed to anticipate any provisions that might heighten your experience. - I can't imagine what they are. Luxury linens, silver flatware, vintage dishes, well equipped kitchen' spa quality towels and flannel bedding, fresh local fruit and flowers, varied library, ambiant mood lighting, motion detecting stair lights, art galore from the unique bamboo gate to the museum like interior. The entire place is a mixed media extravaganza. Inside and out. The landscaping is done in such a way it fools you into thinking you are in your own pocket of paradise. We admired some lillys and Richard gifted us with some bulbs for our own garden.
Richard greets you personally and introduces you to Oma's cottage and her charming features in addition to offering suggestions for touring the nearby park. After the tour your host is only there if you request his help or advice.
We so enjoyed our stay we were reluctant to depart. We live locally in Pahoa now, but for ten years we vacationed all over "Da Big Island" for six week visits...The stay at this charming cottage exceeded our former experiences and expectations. I can't put a value on the peace and enjoyment we derived from our visit. Suffice it to say the time spent was priceless and we highly recommend Oma's for reasons to numerous to count.
We loved our stay at the Volcano House. We were there for 3 nights and enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of it. Even our teenage daughter loved it, as it something different and highly memorable compared to the modern hotels and condos we stayed in on the rest of the trip.
Richard is the perfect host, and even prior to our arrival made sure our visit to the Big Island was something special. After we made the booking, Richard sent us a large packet of island brochures which helped us understand the volcano area as well as the many adventurous things to do on the island.
Richard met us upon arrival, and explained how everything worked including the internet, netflix and other video channels, etc as well as made sure we were quite comfortable. The bedding, towels, kitchen facilities & utensils, bedrooms etc were perfect and he has put a lot of attention to these. He even provided a cool chest filled with ice, chairs for the black sand beaches and an "emergency kit" to put in our car when travelling. We never used it, but I believe it contained rain coats, umbrellas, flashlight etc.
The cottage is filled with antiques and collectibles, which we enjoyed, looking at. There's a nice deck in the back looking into the rain forest.
We spent several days in and around the Volcano National Park, and had a lovely dinner at the Volcano Hotel, where we had views of the red glowing crater. The other nights we cooked at the cottage, which was fun and different from cooking at home.
Richard had given us lots of useful advice such as buying our groceries in Hilo before going to the Volcano area. We did need to pick up a loaf of bread in the local Volcano store and were shocked to find it cost over $8, so definitely stop at the Safeway in Hilo first!
We'd all love to go back to the Volcano area again, despite the 20 hour flying time from London, and will certainly stay at Richard's Volcano House again.
Old Town Volcano Village is the original historic section of Volcano,
It is located about 5 minutes from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park.
I personally feel the Village is an ideal base to explore the entire island from.
I especially like to come back to the cooler mountain air after visiting some of the Hotter sea level areas of Hilo or Kona.
Volcano is at the 4000 foot elevation of Mauna Loa which rises 13, 500 above sea level.
From the Volcano area one can spend wonderful time exploring the National Park and night time volcano viewing is just a short drive. If one wants to go to the sea level beaches in Hilo or the Punalu'u and South Point areas these too are very easy, convenient and short drives.
