Tyringham Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, 4 Sleeps

Airy modern guesthouse: open kitchen/living room + sunroom & private deck on 14 hillside acres. Cathedral ceilings with skylights and an open-plan kitchen/livingroom lend this guesthouse an airy, contemporary feeling. Fully equipped, stylish and comfortably furnished with a queen-sized bed plus a sofa bed in the sunroom to accommodate two to four people (two couples or a couple with two kids). Excellent cell phone reception - Verizon (4G), ATT (4G), Sprint, and T-Mobile. Flat-screen TV with basic cable and DVD player. Stereo with CD player. Radio with iPhone docking station.

A private sanctuary set on a verdant hillside away from it all, yet close to the best the Berkshire region has to offer: Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Barrington Stage Company, and plentiful dining, shopping, and recreational options. Hike on property or nearby trails. Kayak on Goose Pond.

Guests have use of their own washer & dryer and outdoor grill. Garage parking is available. Guests have access to on-property trails.

We welcome children though we must note that the house is not child-proofed - there is a ladder to a loft (off-limits) that may be tempting to little ones, and a stairway that leads up to the house that has no barrier and could present a hazard. There's also a wrought-iron railing that a small child could either get stuck in or fall through. If these features pose a safety risk for your child, along with sharp-cornered coffee tables and uncovered electrical outlets, you might want to consider other vacation options.

Tyringham is the best-kept secret in the Berkshires, home to musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, artists, writers, farmers, and many preserved spaces perfect for hikers. A 'Hinterland Settlement' that's one of the oldest towns in the Berkshires, it's near all the cultural and culinary attractions of the Berkshires but tucked away in a peaceful milieu. Goose Pond, perfect for canoes and kayaks, is just down the road from the guesthouse; access to the Appalachian Trail is a five-minute drive. Other nearby places to explore include Tyringham Cobble, Ashintully Gardens, and McLennan Reservation, with gentle waterfalls and a mountaintop pond.

The property is less than ten minutes from exit #2 (Lee) off Route 90, the Massachusetts turnpike. Two hours from Boston, 2.5 hours from NYC, and an hour away from both the Hartford and Albany airports.

Well behaved dogs are allowed with prior approval.

No smoking.

Private getaway in the Berkshires

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at this lovely property to decompress for a few days after our wedding, and could not have picked a better place. This is a good-sized apartment, over a large garage and set into a hillside, which is in a separate building from the owners' home - close enough to have access to them when needed, but with plenty of privacy. There is a full kitchen, a small deck with a grill and outdoor seating, a bedroom, combined living/dining area with high ceilings and skylights, and another sitting/sleeping area (a sunroom with a futon that could work as an additional bedroom.) The kitchen comes with all the essentials to cook your own meals, and even came with a bottle of wine from our hosts - a sweet touch. The entire apartment is tastefully furnished, bright, clean, and comfortable.

Kipp and Bess, the owners, are incredibly helpful and generous hosts. They were flexible about our check-in and check-out times, and provided an extensive, curated list of favorite eateries, shops, sites, hikes, and events happening during our stay. They clearly make the most of living in the area and can point you in all the right directions. Dogs are welcome here - they have two adorable, friendly corgis themselves. As hosts, they are that perfect mix of friendly and available but also respectful of your space and privacy.

During our short stay, we went on two short hikes (1-2 hours with our slow hiking dog) - Tyringham Cobble and McLennan Reservation. Tyringham Cobble we had almost entirely to ourselves, with the exception of a couple of AT hikers. It was a beautiful path with several vistas. McLennan was deeper woods with some waterfalls and a beaver pond. Both well worth the visit. Goose Pond is a short walk down the road, as well.

We also walked around Great Barrington a bit, which has lots of restaurants, shops, and an artsy scene. We visited the Guthrie Center there, which is fun if you're into folk music history or 60's counterculture types. With our time constraints, we weren't able to take advantage of all that the area has to offer, but we will probably be back - hopefully staying here again!

Great Base for Hiking

  • 5 of 5
This attractive apartment made a great base for us and our dog for a week of day-hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail. The one-bedroom apartment, located over the owner's three-car garage which is built into a hill, is spacious with cathedral ceilings, skylights, and lots of light. The back door opens to a small deck and a lawn. Behind the owner's house and guesthouse is a wooded hillside with a short loop trail, which was a pleasant walk. The forest was full of bird song this time of year. This rental is located in a suburban-rural neighborhood, with other homes nearby but hidden in the woods.

The apartment was clean and comfortable, and the owners couldn't have been more helpful, even shuttling us to a couple of our hikes. They also provided a lot of extras like complimentary local chocolate, wine and beer; condiments and spices. They let us store our canoe and bicycle in their garage.

The closest trailhead for the AT is only about 2 miles away, and two others are a 10-minute drive. We saw lots of wildflowers in bloom in the woods on our hikes, and a fawn, though it was buggy on the warmer days this time of year. In addition to hiking, we also enjoyed canoeing on Goose Pond, only a mile away, and especially on pristine Upper Goose Pond. We visited the interesting Hancock Shaker Village Museum, about a 45-minute drive. There are several good restaurants in nearby Lee, only ten minutes away. We liked the French restaurant Chez Nous the best.
