Leysin Chalet Rental Photos and Description

4/5 double bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps 8-10 in non-smoking comfort

Situated at 1260m, with spectacular mountain views, our traditional Swiss chalet offers the choice of a spacious family home or 3 independent apartments. Featuring panoramic windows, modern furniture, well-equipped kitchens and bathrooms, main dining area seats 10-12, Swiss TV, Internet TV, fast WiFi broadband Internet.

Features an efficient central heating system and traditional wood burning stoves. Exceptionally sunny weather allows guests to slide open the magnificent floor to ceiling windows onto the mid-level balcony with its stunning views.

Two garages / extra parking available. Hourly shuttle bus stops outside the during winter and summer seasons - 2mins to village centre.

Excellent ski facilities via telecabine lifts to 2000m (at Berneuse) 3 mins by car/shuttle. Extensive ski runs from 1200 - 2300m with superb snowboarding. The neighbouring Les Diablerets glacier @ 3000m can provide all year skiing. Professional ski and mountain guides available on request.

Travel information - air: Air services to Geneva are excellent, especially from the UK. In addition to budget airlines (contact the property owners for details on low cost flight and car hire websites) it is worth checking fares on British Airways and Swiss - both airlines offer competitive rates on this route, frequently undercutting the no-frills operators. It can also be important to avoid peak-travel times (Friday evenings and Monday mornings can be particularly difficult) and flights can be very busy over the weekend, especially during the winter season. Geneva airport offers a wide range of car hire options (check to see whether your airline offers special car hire rates in addition to the specialist companies, also if arriving late, make sure your car hire desk will remain open) and the railway station in the airport offers direct connections via Geneva to Aigle, our nearest town, throughout the day (see below). At Aigle one changes onto the classic mountain cog railway for the 20min ascent to Leysin.

Travel information - rail: There are generous discounts available on the Swiss Railway system for frequent travelers and families (contact the owners for details on rail travel websites).

Leysin has excellent rail connections to Geneva and directly through to Geneva Airport via Aigle; the service between Leysin and Aigle is a classic mountain cog railway which functions in most weather conditions. Services from Geneva Airport station start at 0630 each morning, with trains to Leysin every hour (via Aigle) through to 2130. On the return journey services run from 0530 through to 2130. Total journey time is around 1hr 50mins, with a quick transfer in Aigle. In Leysin there are 4 stops, with Leysin Village and Feydey offering connections to the free shuttle bus, which runs through the village (and stops outside the chalet) every hour. There are also three taxi services with minibus, for use outside the shuttle bus hours, from any Leysin station. A taxi from Aigle to Leysin is quite expensive (around SFr 75+).

Travel information - road: The motorway system south of the North French channel ports is fast and efficient. From Geneva the motorway is excellent, bypassing Lausanne and Montreux, with superb views of Lake Geneva across to France. One leaves the motorway at Aigle, to follow the mountain road for around 18kms up to Leysin. Total distance from Geneva airport is 125kms, and journey time around 1hr 30mins. All roads are kept clear in winter, though in snow and ice conditions 4-wheel drive or chains are reasonably essential (and in some conditions compulsory) on the mountain roads. Please contact the owners for details of route-planning websites, which can make the journey to Leysin very straight-forward from any point in Europe. Motorway restaurants, including the ubiquitous Mövenpick chain, are well worth using in Switzerland, and are well-equipped with shops, mini-markets, clean toilets and in many cases, WiFi (either free or nominal charge). There are three large supermarket complexes on the route from Geneva.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'Fantastic place, very enjoyable time, wonderful views....', 'A glass of wine in the evening sunshine, accompanied by a symphony of cow bells...a memory of heaven to savour for a long time', '....had a fabulous holiday, lots of snow and brilliant sunshine....after just two lessons the children were able to ski from top to the bottom of the mountain...', ' runs very picturesque, good skiing, lovely, unpredictable, healthy, few days' break, many thanks...', '....peace, absolute peace...', '....our only problem was finding anyone who would talk in French! Everyone we met spoke fluent English - the local shop owners couldn't have been friendlier, and the restaurants were superb, varied and excellent value - we particularly liked La Fromagerie with imaginative local dishes, a fascinating cheese-making demonstration running throughout the evening (helped by our kids) and the village museum on the upper floors - magical!' '...local Classic cinema shows 1st run English films!'

Poorly equipped and maintained apartment

  • 2 of 5

Our stay in Chalet Chimere was no success. Outside the flagstones were disintegrating and were a safety risk in urgent need to be renewed. When we entered the garden level apartment we were met with a smell of basement and mould, and the heating did not work.

We have never seen a kitchen in Switzerland so poorly supplied as this. Two pots without lids and a tiny frying pan, maybe good for one person, but worn. Neither the stove nor the fridge was properly cleaned. A very meager supply of plates and glasses did not help. In the bathroom the toilet was loose in its socket and we wondered when it would finally slip from the floor. The ventilator was very noisy.

The generous welcome package part of the rental contract and ordinary supplies such as detergent for dishes, a brush and extra toilet paper as promised in the description of the chalet were missing.

The local keyholder helped to restore heating by filling water on the boiler system and to move us to the top level apartment which was by chance free and also better equipped. However, furniture and kitchenware were worn, fire extinguisher missing, and shelves were a mess of 400+ VHS films for no use as the VHS player did not work and the TV set so tiny and old that the 100+ Satellite TV channels were useless.

This is the perfect place for those who are looking to get a brief relief from the "normal" world. The chalet is beautifully situated with lovely mountain views. I was in Switzerland doing research in Geneva at the United Nations and it was worth the travel time to come home to Leysin. We hiked and enjoyed the beautiful community and the very friendly people.

We spent 6 summer weeks in Europe and this was by far the highlight of our trip. As Goldilocks might say, London was too cold and wet, Rome was too hot, but Leysin was just right.

I would highly recommend this property. In addition, Richard is so amazingly well organized. Lola (sorry if I am messing up the name) was a great help. I needed a taxi for some of my early morning commute and she graciously arranged that for me.

If you come be sure you go to Montreux and to the Château de Chillon. Absolutely wonderful. You can take the train to Montreux and then catch the ferry to Chillon.

Thank you for a wonderful place to experience Switzerland.

Great stay in Charlet Chimere

  • 5 of 5

My family memebers, 7 of us had a great stay in Charlet Chimere. Thanks for Richard and Lora's hospitalities and courtesy, staying here is the best part of our Europe trip.

My 3 kids liked everything here, the cartoons, the bread and jams, the snow was favulous, they expressed their feelings on the guest book.

We had 2nd and 3rd floors and I think 2F has the best view.

Hope to come back to hike in the Alps sometime.

Fantastic skiing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful holiday staying in Chalet Chimere. As six adults and three children the different levels gave us all space to relax but we could share meals and entertainment together. The chalet is very well equipped and is very clean and well maintained.

There is an endless source of information about the area and things to do as well as the how things worked and where to find things in the chalet. The chalet is so well situated, two minutes by bus into the village but far enough up the mountain for the most spectacular views. The information and photos on the website are accurate and in fact the chalet just gets better from the time you arrive.

October in Leysin

  • 5 of 5

Our October stay at Chalet Chimere was magical. In the beginning of our trip, we hiked and rode horses in sunny, warm weather amid the fall leaves. To our surprise and delight, we were also able to build a snowman and go sledding by the end of our week in Leysin. The spacious, clean chalet is well-suited for young families (in our case two families of 4), and the views were amazing from the first floor balcony. The owners, Richard and Jenny, were a delight to work with and made the stay more comfortable by stocking the fridge with drinks and breakfast foods ahead of time and offering suggestions of things to do in the area. Not to be missed is the Chateau de Chillon in Montreux.

Leysin is linked to the Rhône valley A9 motorway at Aigle by road (kept clear in winter) and a classic mountain cog railway, with fast train connections direct to Geneva city, Geneva Airport and south to Italy.
