The Fairways is an impeccably maintained luxury gated community on over 20 acres adjacent to the Francis H. Brown North Golf course, one of two championship golf courses within Mauna Lani (your stay includes discounted guest golf rates at both).

Amenities at the Fairways include a large BBQ pavilion, large and luxurious free form swimming pool, spa, waterfalls, and a fitness center with a/c.

Hale O' Honu'ea: Stay in this beautifully furnished 2 bedroom townhome, with polished granite and stainless steel gourmet kitchen, 2 1/2 baths and 1 car garage and relax in over 1600 square feet of indoor living in a spacious open layout.

The tranquil Lanai off the main floor includes a wet bar, Viking grill/rotisserie and dining seating for 6.

The floor plan here is ideal for privacy and comfort with both bedrooms upstairs away from the main living area and on far ends of the home, each with an ensuite full bathroom.

The master suite includes a den sitting area, ensuite with jacuzzi tub and private lanai that together with the downstairs lanai extends the living space to over 2000 square feet. Enjoy the view of the naturalized golf course landscaping and the 11th green of the north course in the distance.

About Jeff and Sonia

My wife and I have a young family and we have been visiting the Hawaiian islands for almost a decade to escape the cold winters (and even the cool summers) of the Pacific Northwest. We are both competitive athletes and have done dozens of marathons and triathlons all over the world including Ironman distance races. In fact, we first found the Fairways at Mauna Lani racing the Honu 70.3.

We have 2 young children and enjoy traveling anywhere we can enjoy good food, good weather, different cultures - and still play in the outdoors.

Why Jeff and Sonia chose Mauna Lani

We found ourselves returning to Mauna Lani more than any place else in the tropics. What we love most about Mauna Lani is that it offers privacy away from the crowds elsewhere yet offers the convenience of close by restaurants and shops when you want them. It has beautiful calm waters for safe snorkeling, waves (when you want them) for surfing, and nature abounds with the turtles, coral reef, dolphin and whale sightings. There are miles of running and cycling right out the door.

We stayed at other properties within Mauna Lani but feel that the grounds, large free form pool, spa and location of the Fairways are the perfect combination of private yet convenient to the amenities of the rest of the resort as it is close enough to walk to the Fairmont Orchid and Shops of Mauna Lani.

What makes this townhome unique

We chose Hale O' Honu'ea because of all the floorplans we've stayed in Mauna Lani, it suits our family and friends the best. All bedrooms are upstairs which makes us feel safe; the bedrooms are on opposite ends of the townhome so they feel private; each has it's own ensuite bathroom for convenience; the open floor plan of the main living space and windows on the upper floor allow the island breeze to move through.

We've made updates to make it even more comfortable and hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Our daughter named 'Hale O' Honu'ea', Home of the Hawksbill Turtle. In conjunction with Oahu's Sea Life Park, Mauna Lani Resort raises honu (the green sea turtle) releases them when mature, helping the comeback of honu. The native Hawksbill turtle, or Honu'ea, is more endangered and the Big Island is one of it's few nesting places. Our family hopes someday to see the Honu'ea frequenting the waters of Mauna Lani too.

We are transitioning to our condo to be more 'green'. We've installed ceiling fans and screens to enjoy the island breeze. We provide personal amenity dispensers that reduce plastic bottle waste of typical hotel 'travel size' products. We are converting to CFL and LED lighting. We've chosen BPA-free acrylics for outdoor drinkware. We provide environmentally responsible detergents and will continue to transition to like products throughout Hale O' Honu'ea. We admit that we have far to go, but we feel these small steps are all in the right direction to protect the natural beauty of this special place.

Excellent Value, Perfect for Young Families

Really satisfied with the rental. The unit is newer construction and it was very clean and well furnished. We ate on the outside patio regularly and enjoyed cooking on the Viking grill. Kitchen was well stocked and included all the cooking supplies and equipment we needed. Master BR and bath were spacious and everyone in our party spent time reading on the lanai. The daybed off the master BR was a perfect set-up for our child. The second BR was fine although it was a little warm at times because it received a lot of direct sunlight and was located above the garage. The pool at the complex was nice and within easy walking distance. The pool was large and it had a hot tub, showers, and a covered eating area.

The unit also included access to a great private beach, and we used it almost daily. Perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or just hanging out. Lots of cool things walkable from the beach, including tide pools. The unit was also stocked with beach gear and toys and a stack of clean beach towels, so we didn't have to pack those or buy them on island. The beach isn't an easy walk from the unit, but the Shops at Mauna Lani are. It had a grocery store with reasonable prices (for Hawaii), especially if you signed up for their loyalty card. Grocery also had beer & wine, and prepared food if you didn't feel like cooking or going to one of the restaurants at the complex. Shops also had free daily activities like hula dancing and ukulele lessons. The Fairmont Orchid is also walkable, and it had a good 8pm happy hour.

The final thing that really stood out was the customer service. This was our first VRBO rental so we didn't know what to expect, but the communication was great and the owner was very pleasant and easy to deal with. She helped us plan our activities and answered all our questions quickly and before we arrived to the island. Once we went through the easy check-in and started our stay, the owner was easily available and quickly responded to our inquiries. And, when we had our biggest crisis of the trip—a forgotten stuffed animal—the owner had the toy delivered to our last island stop.

The resort, complex, unit, and owner were all excellent. Would not hesitate to recommend or rent here again.

We really feel that our little slice of paradise is perfect for our family, and we love hearing back from guests that they enjoyed it too. It's hard to remember when we're planning a trip from a snowy mainland just how warm the Hawaiian sun can be. Southern and western sunsets are beautiful in Hawaii, but in a living space they add a lot of passive solar gain. We're fortunate that only one room in the condo gets sun; the rest has northern and eastern exposure and stays much cooler. As do both the upstairs and downstairs lanais that you were able to enjoy for dining and reading. We find the lanais are a welcome break from the sunny beach at the end of the day. Mahalo for your words, and we hope we can welcome you to the island again. Until then, Aloha!

Hawaiian Perfection

Hale O'honu'ea was a fantastic place for our recent Hawaiian vacation. Walking through the door for the first time you can't help but be impressed by the spaciousness, cleanliness and tasteful decor of the condo. Fully equipped with everything you would need for your stay.

The kitchen has all the cookware and glassware necessary. Cupboards have a lot of condiments and spices (so do a check before heading out for that initial grocery trip).

Beach chairs and boogie boards as well as many water toys that little ones could use at the beach. A provided cooler comes in handy for day trips (beach or sightseeing).

The grounds of the complex are well maintained and the pool area is terrific. Also a small gym available for those missing their workout.

Our first week we had a small hiccup with the washing machine. A call to Sonia and the matter was taken care of promptly. Very nice to have owners who attend to things quickly and are genuinely interested in making your vacation an enjoyable one. Much appreciated.

A short drive away (or walk for the fitness-minded) is a semi-private beach you access with the provided gate card. A good deal of parking here but recommended to get there before 10:30 to ensure a parking spot. A nice restaurant overlooking the beach can provide a beverage or lunch with a spectacular view (take out to the beach available). The beach itself is great - perfect snorkelling spot where you are guaranteed to see a wide variety of fish - or a place where you can work on your tan while relaxing on the provided lounge chairs.

The call it the "Big Island' because it is! So much to see and do. The condo is a great staging spot regardless of where you wish to go on the island.

A golf paradise for those inclined, with 7 courses within a 20 minute drive from the condo. Shopping for the ladies .5 mile from the condo or 15 minutes away at Waikoloa Beach.

Sonia and Jeff are first class people and tremendous to deal with. Their condo is so nice, it starts to feel like home after a day or two.

All in all it was the perfect winter getaway we were looking for. We liked it so much we are returning next year and can't wait.

Perfect Getaway

Hale O'honu'ea was a wonderful place for my husband and I to spend a getaway without our kiddos. While our trip was just for the two of us, this condo is also perfect for families, as it's spacious and can very comfortably accommodate a family of five. The condo itself is in excellent condition and was impressively clean; it's also tastefully decorated overall with quality furnishings and bedding (comfy master bed too!). The bathrooms' fixtures, tile and flooring are elegant and were spotless, and we appreciate that the owners keep it supplied with soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash (all those little "necessities" that are a pain to have to pack along). The modern kitchen is very well stocked with cookware, utensils, plenty of mugs, cups, glasses and dinnerware. It also had all as basic appliances you'll likely need--we made good use of the blender for our daily (sometimes more than daily) smoothies. We loved that Sonia and Jeff provide plenty of beach chairs, mats, beach towels, boogie boards as well as a soft sided cooler. There were other water toys available as well, but since it was just the two of us, we travelled light. The cooler came in very handy for spending a day at the beach or on a driving adventure. We ate all of our at-home meals out on the lanai, enjoying the warmth and privacy--I don't think we ever actually sat at the dining room table, but it looked nice. :) Access to the nearby (short drive) semi-private beach club is a great perk; plenty of parking when we were there, and it was nice to have the option to use the club's covered beach chaise lounges. There's also shade provided by the palm trees at the beach. The small cove that the beach sits on has awesome snorkeling--don't miss it! The condo property has a beautifully landscaped pool area that never looked busy; we never took advantage of it-- too busy exploring the island. We had such a great time and enjoyed Sonia and Jeff's place so much, we know we'll be back… and maybe even bring the kids along! ;)

Great Staycation

Hale O'honu'ea was wonderful. Sonia and Jeff have outfitted the house with active families in mind. There are wonderful snorkel, boogie board, water toys, beach towels aplenty. Picnic gear that was awesome and made day trip exploration fun and affordable. Kitchen was very well equipped; one of the best. Private BBQ nice too; made accommodating dietary restrictions in my group easy. Check your pantry before stocking up as many spices and basics already there, as well as storage, paper products, shampoo, laundry soap etc :). Condo beach access a little drive but really awesome for snorkeling and other water fun. Some people took bread to feed fish at fish ponds there; really exciting. Complex pool and hot tub were lovely. Enjoyed free activities/shows at the shops Mauna Lani. Small market there very well stocked. Wifi great. Can't say enough about the help/support Sonia and Jeff provided; before and during our stay.

Wonderful vacation

Our stay at Hale O'honu'ea was delightful. The condo was warm and inviting and a perfect size for our family of four. We enjoyed the location and our children loved both the pool and the private beach. It was also convenient for our day trips to the other side of the island for zip-lining and other adventures. The condo was well appointed and the owners were very helpful both before and during our stay.

Perfect trip

Perfect time to leave the freezing and wet weather and escape to warm sun. The temperature was just right - the condo would get warm warm during the day while we were out, but every afternoon we opened all the windows and doors and enjoyed how the breeze cooled the condo off. We had to remember to use door stops on the front and bedroom doors or the breeze moving thru the condo could slam them shut! We had to use the AC our first night as we arrived after 10pm and had to cool the place off, but after that didn't need it. I suspect the neighbors did the same as we didn't hear AC units running while we sat out on the lanai for breakfast and dinner. One drawback to sleeping with the windows opened: having the tropical birds wake you up with their morning songs. We didn't mind though - we put that down as part of Hawaii life.

The condo was well equipped: I cook and it was nice to have quality forged steel knives, a great blender for making the kids tropical fruit smoothies, extra Corelle dining dishes and acrylic glasses so we could dine on the lanai with out worrying about breaking dish ware, and a stainless steel carafe to keep coffee hot. We especially liked the water infuser pitcher: we had fruit water all week like they offer in the lobby of 5 * hotels. I want one if these for home!

Set up worked well for our family of 5: grandma and our oldest slept in the room with twin beds, and our youngest slept on the twin bed in the den. I fell asleep putting him to bed one night so even though it's a day bed, it's comfortable!

Loved all the books in the condo on Hawaiian fish, trees, flowers, and language. It was fun to look through them and identify what we saw. My mom doesn't swim, so she wandered the grounds of the Fairways identifying the many flowers and trees.
